Learning About Young Makers - User Generated Education @Jackie Gerstein

Learning About Young Makers - User Generated Education @Jackie Gerstein | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I am a huge proponent of using hands-on, interactive learning activities to explore ill-defined problems as a way of teaching for all age groups. Given the spontaneity and uncertainty of these types of active learning environments, I believe educators should observe, reflect on, and analyze how learners interact with the materials, the content, the educator, and the other learners. This practice is in line with the teacher as ethnographer.

In my role as a teacher as ethnographer, I made some initial observations during my first two weeks of teaching maker education for elementary age students. With half the kids under 7, I learned a bunch about young makers.

“I can’t do this.” is often a sign or signal of frustration and should not be brushed off by parents/teachers. Kids need to be in an environment that allows them to persevere and work at the problem  even multiple times, until they themselves find the solution.  The lesson they will learn is that effort will often produce positive results.

Norton Gusky's curator insight, September 18, 2015 8:04 AM

Wonderful insights that all educators need to understand.

Angela K. Adams's curator insight, October 21, 2015 8:22 PM

Teacher issues - I chose this resource because I feel that more teachers need to incorporate hands on learning in their lessons and spend more time observing how their students learn.  I hope this resource would encourage more teachers to allow their students to be more involved in their learning.

Our favorite unit conversion app: Measures HD for iPad - iPad Insight

Our favorite unit conversion app: Measures HD for iPad - iPad Insight | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I’m lucky enough to have lived in several overseas countries, and when living in the US I travel overseas a lot. Given that we in the US are the last holdouts to use the archaic “English” measurement “system” that not even the English use anymore, I often have the need to convert metric units into English, or the other way ‘round, and to convert foreign currency to and from $US. Whether it’s cooking, buying gasoline, trying to figure out whether 20C needs a sweater, or whether 10,000 Rwandan Francs is a lot for a bottle of wine, I keep a unit conversion app on my home screen. Fortunately, unit converters are as common as to-do apps or notepad apps, and I’ve tried many over the years. For me, Measures HD for iPad hits the sweet spot of having all the features I need, with none that I don’t to clutter up the app, all presented in a simple, intuitive user interface.

In the Children's Room: 25 Days of Art: Building Squares #makered | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"I am obsessed with this project. My roommate came home a few months ago after studying at the National Art Gallery with these little pentagons of pressed board with notches cut into them. ...

I immediately decided that we would have to do this at the library and then almost as immediately forgot all about it.

Until I saw a Pinterest post in which a mom cut narrow triangles in chipboard squares and let her kids spend hours just experimenting with the types of structures they could build.``

Logistics of a Makerspace: Scheduling - Renovated Learning @DianaLRendina | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"During my poster session at ISTE, I must have been asked dozens of times: “When do students use your Makerspace?  How do you organize scheduling?”

I am in a magnet middle school on a flexible schedule.  I have an extremely supportive administration and staff and an enthusiastic student body that’s eager to learn.  I realize that these circumstances won’t apply to everyone and that I’m very lucky to be in the place that I’m in.

That being said, here’s how and when students at Stewart Middle Magnet use our Makerspace:"

No user Serviceable Parts Inside? The rise of the Fix-It Culture - Hackaday

No user Serviceable Parts Inside? The rise of the Fix-It Culture - Hackaday | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Back in the old days, if you really needed a schematic for a TV you’d have to buy a Sam’s Photofact manual, and a service manual for your car came in either the Chilton or Haynes flavors. The fact that the very people who were being asked to shell out big bucks for these manuals were the people too cheap and stubborn to pay for professional repairs somehow escaped the marketers, and so more often than not we went into a repair with nothing but basic tools and hella confidence.

Words for the fixer to live by [Source: iFixit]
These days my first thought with most repairs is, “Someone must have dealt with this already,” and I head to the Internet for a search. True, the breadth of repair information can be bewildering, while the depth of coverage can range from the incredibly detailed to the barely usable, so it can be hard to get a good signal to noise ratio for any particular repair. But the mere fact that there’s so much information out there, almost all of which comes from dedicated DIYers, really speaks to the health of the fix-it culture.

From the screen to the hand: getting started with 3D printing in the classroom | Making in School | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Looking for ways to engage your students in deep learning? Hoping to hone your ability to help students truly understand what they are learning?

Integrating making into your practice engages students, provides a true context for character development (think persistence), and most importantly, gives students experiences to learn core content and practices more deeply. Making is learner-centered. It is based on Seymour Papert’s theory of constructionism (yes, based on Piaget’s constructivism), which says that learners build their understanding more deeply if they create something to share with the world.

18 Apps For Teaching Kids Programming - AVATAR GENERATION

18 Apps For Teaching Kids Programming - AVATAR GENERATION | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"So, what is the best way to present programming for kids? Through play, of course. The best way of teaching kids code is to present it as a game, such as using Minecraft and its red logic blocks. As a result, computer coding for kids has never been easier or more entertaining. The end result is to hopefully have kids coding all the technology they are using and thus create a better, brighter and more customizable future for themselves."

Five-Minute Film Festival: Freedom to Fail Forward

Five-Minute Film Festival: Freedom to Fail Forward | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Failure is an inevitable part of life, but it's often accompanied by shame -- most people do everything in their power to avoid it. But to paraphrase educational philosopher John Dewey, a true thinker learns as much from failures as from successes. What if educators worked to take some of the sting (and the stigma) out of failing, and encouraged reflection and revision to build upon the lessons learned? Perhaps there's a goldmine of opportunities if we can re-frame failure as a valuable learning experience, an essential step along the path to discovery and innovation. Check out this list of videos to help start the conversation about embracing failure."
