For years, students around the world took typing classes, first with typewriters then with computer keyboards. This class was designed to help students develop the real world skills they needed to thrive after graduation. However, now knowing home row is less important than understanding HTML, and an employer will be much more excited to see “Java” on a resume than “types 120 words per minute.”

As computer technology becomes more ingrained in every aspect of students’ lives, and likely in their future careers, many are advocating for basic and advanced computer coding courses to be taught in schools just like typing classes were.

Aside from developing students’ computer science skills, teaching coding in elementary, middle, and high school may help children better understand the world around them.

Like many others who watched the finals, I have to admit that there were some new-to-me words in the final rounds. In education, we have a way of taking a “thing” and reframing it to be something else…to fit our ideas or the latest trend of the moment but making isn’t new. Making has been the fabric of mankind since we existed. It’s not just technology and specifically coding. It’s not about devices. It really is about the synergy and application of ideas and passionately bringing them to life or even the need for a project to be real and the ability to create it.

The “new to us” part though, is not just making a horse and carriage of wood and glitter but maybe one that twinkles on command or moves through some animatronic lens. It’s making the wooden “President Obama” recite some of his famous quotes/speeches or even tweets from his twitter account because it was coded to do so. It’s my nephew, the puppet maker, creating puppets that respond to buttons that he has coded to its appendages or a prom dress drenched in LEDs programmed to dance to the music. To be clear, knowing my mother, her creations would have definitely done these things if she had the skills to do so. She has definitely created her share of pieces with integrated lighting. (Christmas lights were her “LED” of choice)

The “new to us” part is this idea of being a maker who takes advantage of accessible technology, embedding skills that could foster even greater potential and pathways in its creators. Technology in making has lead to some of the greatest innovations and in schools, providing pathways to create in this way can be a game-changer as our students craft the future of innovation.

Legos were definitely a library staple this year! Sometimes they were part of our Makerspace, and sometimes they were stations for use after checkout. During our #geniushour, Legos were especially popular!

This week (the second-to-the-last week of school), I once again set out three boxes of Legos as an invitation. I have three boxes of donated Legos on a table, and when students spot them, their eyes light up like the brightest of lights. Sometimes they ask if they can play. When I say "yes", it's like I've given them a key to unlock a door!!

A tortoise in Brazil just received a unique gift: a 3D printed shell. The tortoise, named Fred, was found with 85% of its shell burnt in a forest fire.

The group who came to Fred’s rescue, called the “Animal Avengers,”  is a volunteer animal group consisting of a 3D designer, four veterinarians, and a dental surgeon. They had to virtually reconstruct all of the creature’s shell, due to the extensive damage.

This past month students at Islip High School created wind tubes and marble runs in our library makerspace. Like all good ventures we sought out instructions, purchased supplies, cleared a work space, and got busy.

Instructions, like recipes, are sometimes spot on and other times well, let’s just say not so good. I’ve posted pictures of our creations and many have contacted me inquiring about the materials we used. So here’s a summary of our success and failure.

Integration into the Kindergarten curriculum was a rather loose connection, but definitely a great introduction to 3D printing. One of the Kindergarten writing units revolves around “Looking Closely” at different things and writing about them like a scientist. Many of the Kindergarten teachers like to choose leaves as one of the objects students write about, so I decided to expand this idea into the design of a 3D printed leaf. To support students looking closely at small details as well as develop fine motor skills, each class worked together to make a blown up drawing of a leaf. In order to avoid having the whole class fighting over space to observe and draw around one piece of butcher paper, I set up the class so that I had three stations for the students to rotate around. The other two stations were a Bee Bot coding station and an Engineering Design challenge with Legos (design a bridge strong enough to hold a water bottle).

If you ask any DIY fanatic what’s on top of their wish-list, chances are pretty high they’ll say a laser cutter or engraver. As you might expect, these exotic pieces of kit use high-powered lasers to cut through materials, or to engrave them with a design. Like a 3D printer, they’re controlled by a computer, and work autonomously once provided with a design.

Laser cutters aren’t terribly new technology, and haven’t quite captured the public attention like 3D printers have. However, they are incredibly cool, and much like 3D printers, prices have crashed to the point where they’re now affordable for DIY enthusiasts.

Which brings us on to a really interesting question: What one should you get? What can you make with it? And crucially, what should you do to ensure that you use them as safely as possible?
