Today’s schools are challenged with new demands of a global economy and with students who are more connected than ever before. While the world has changed, schools have remained relatively the same in their structure and pedagogical delivery methods. In Eric Sheninger’s newest book, Uncommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids, he not only explores the necessary changes needed in our schools to be more relevant and responsive to our students’ needs today, but he also shares strategic processes and ideas to turn theory into reality.
Throughout his book, Sheninger provides concrete examples from his former school, New Milford High School, as well as others from throughout the country. Each chapter provides rationale, research, and/or models for change, with comprehensive examples and resource links sprinkled throughout to highlight how these change have been done by today’s educators. At the end of each chapter, Sheninger highlights implementation tips before a summary of the chapter. Every school and every classroom can explore these ideas in order to build uncommon learning opportunities for all students in our schools.

While there are many initiatives that can be implemented in our schools to begin to offer opportunities for our students to grow and learn in different ways, these just scratch the surface of the more important theme of the book – shifting the culture of our schools to utilize technology as a tool to enhance learning and achievement. Sheninger emphasizes this aspect continually throughout the book, putting sound pedagogy above technology in every strategic process. “Pedagogy always trumps technology” (Sheninger, 43). Technology is a tool to enhance learning outcomes, and when used appropriately, it is not the tool that matters, but the learning and experiences we can provide for our students that matter most.

However, the vastness of the internet also means that while there are lots of great sites worth mentioning, there are a lot of sites that also go largely unknown. This means that you can potentially miss out on a lot of great content. However, great content can be found on a wide variety of sites, whether well-trodden or completely unknown. While I am a huge advocate for the purposeful integration of technology in schools, we must resist the temptation to think that this is the solution to solve all the ills in our current education system.

What concerns me most is how many districts and schools are going all in with one-on-one or bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives with no real plan for implementation and evaluation of effectiveness. This lack of planning and support will likely result in devices never achieving the outcomes that they were designed to achieve. It’s foolish to think that students will learn just by putting a device in their hands.

What’s needed is a shared vision and strategic plan for how mobile technology will be utilized to improve student learning outcomes that are aligned to higher standards.

You've no doubt read countless blogs and articles about the incredible impact makerspaces can have in schools. You may even have started rearranging your space, or perhaps you've created an Amazon wish list. But after being a maker-librarian for nearly two years, I can assure you that you should really stop thinking about starting a makerspace ... and just do it. 

I spent a solid year planning my makerspace. I developed a vision statement and set goals. I made an infographic for my administration, listing standards that would be addressed. I weeded my library like crazy and made mock-ups using Google Drawings to help them envision the new space.

At conferences I went to everything with the word "maker" in the title. I set up a filter on TweetDeck to see everything posted on #makered and #makerspace. And while I learned a ton and met a lot of amazing people, I really regret not having my own space already established before going into all these learning experiences.

Which is why I strongly recommend you stop thinking about starting your makerspace and just get started.

Giving students choice in the way they produce and publish their writing can give voice to the creativity that cements learning. And letting students tell their stories in different ways doesn’t have to be a lot of extra work for the teacher, either. With some academic guidelines, some expectations, and a few boundaries, it's safe to turn students loose to explore different ways of telling a story.

A great way to get started tapping into students' creativity is to implement "tech choice boards" and "app smashing" in your classroom. Simply put, app smashing is when students use multiple apps to guide the creative process or showcase their work. App smashing also makes it easy to evaluate the skills and techniques being used by students. By introducing your students to a core of key apps (tech choice boards), giving them the parameters of the project, and supporting them as they learn and create, you will very quickly be facilitating app smashing in your classroom!

Few trends in K-12 ed tech are as hot–or as under-researched–as “Maker” education.

The term generally refers to using a wide variety of hands-on activities (such as building, computer programming, and sewing) to support academic learning and the development of a mindset that values playfulness and experimentation, growth and iteration, and collaboration and community.

Typically, “Making” involves attempting to solve a particular problem, creating a physical or digital artifact, and sharing that product with a larger audience. Often, such work is guided by the notion that process is more important than results.

The Maker Movement has its roots outside of school, in institutions such as science museums and in the informal activities that everyday people have taken part in for generations. It began exploding about a decade ago, thanks in large part to the enthusiastic audience of Make magazine and the popularity of public events such as Maker Faires (the most well-known of which was hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House in 2014.) The rise of cheap digital tools, including microcontroller platforms such as Arduino and rapid-prototyping tools such as 3-D printers, has in recent years lent the movement a decidedly techie flavor.

Efforts to bring Making and “Maker spaces” into K-12 schools are still “nascent,” said Erica Halverson, an associate professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a leading researcher into Maker education.

But that’s changing fast.

Access is one of the key elements in the process of  leveraging the power of EdTech in your teaching and for your professional growth. This is where digital curation techniques come in handy. For our 50th issue of Make: (April/May 2016), we decided to talk to a number of people who have contributed to the magazine, shown at Maker Faire, written for the website, and who have basically been a huge part of the success of Maker Media, to share some of what they’ve been up to recently. We asked them about current projects they’re working on, some of their favorite tips (on everything from practical shop workings to a maker pro’s bottom line), and any inspiring memories they’ve had during their time in the maker movement. You can see the full feature piece in the magazine.

Part of the President’s recent announcement of the CS For All initiative calls for “expanding access to high-quality instructional materials.”At the primary grade level, however, I am having a hard time finding any materials that qualify.

This may seem hard to believe. After all, there are hundreds of resources for young coders. I can’t update my rated list of resources fast enough. However, as we expand from a few classrooms learning computer science when it’s convenient to coding in every classroom every day, we’re realizing an ideal coding curriculum does not exist.

People often ask me two questions about Design Thinking. First, is the same as making, and second, do I like it. It’s obvious there are similarities and overlaps, and similar ways that they can be implemented well (or not so well). I think design is the key to modern STEM education, but it’s a mistake to think that using Design Thinking methodology is the same as teaching design. Design Thinking gets the “big D, big T” treatment because it’s a methodology invented at the Institute of Design at Stanford University (also known as the d.school) with assistance from ideo, a product design and consulting company.

I will spend the rest of my education career helping others get to the magical place I’ve seen when learning isn’t about a THING or an ACRONYM, where learning is about authentic experiences, removing ceilings, and engaging with the world.  While the world argues about whether or not gifted ed is fair, starts movements like #CS4All, and marvels at the obvious idea that art belongs in STEM, I’m just going to focus on my own mission…..   Let’s MAKE school more, pun totally intended.
