UNESCO Launches Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) — @joycevalenza NeverEndingSearch | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
This week UNESCO launched a framework illustrating its Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
This global strategy marries the large, but often separated, disciplines of information literacy and media literacy and creates a common vocabulary for folks in multiple areas of knowledge to engage in conversation. It also positions these critical literacies as a combined set of competencies–knowledge, skills and attitudes–central for living and working in our world today.

Opening Tinkercad 3D Designs in Minecraft - Speed of Creativity @wfryer  | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
I’m serving as a “Minecraft Consultant” to our 6th grade Social Studies teacher (Sara Zedlitz) and middle school librarian (Michaela Freeland) who are collaborating for a second year on an awesome 3D design and 3D printing project that is part of a study on ancient Rome and Roman structures. Yesterday I helped students who had designed their 3D structures in Tinkercad export their files as “schematics” for Minecraft. Today I used MCEdit to import those objects into a flat Minecraft world and add some modifications to them, including lighting and water in the aqueduct. In this post I’ll highlight the key steps of this process and share both a Google Doc how-to document as well as a 5 minute screencast I recorded of my initial import efforts.

Once considered the skill of the future, coding is now a necessity for most emerging career fields. If learning to code is like learning a foreign language, then it follows that it might be easier to learn when you're young. And now there's a robot for that.

Presentation Tools that Ignite Student Creativity

Presentation Tools that Ignite Student Creativity | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"I am an educator who is constantly in search for tools that promote student creation over student consumption. For years PowerPoint, Prezi, and Google Slides have been the "go to" presentation tools that allow for some student creation in the classroom. At times, many teachers and students look for something different to use, something a little more engaging for their audience.

There are many free online presentation tools out there, but I am going to highlight a couple that your students can use to create with."

"Proto Max is designed for kids ages six and older to learn the basics of how programming works, but even those who don't want to deal with figuring out how to customize a robot can still play with it. With a dial on the side of Proto Max's perpetually smiling face, you can pick one of three predefined personalities: small, medium or large. These affect the pup's general temperament by adjusting the volume of its voice and how it reacts to stimuli. You can open the relatively easy-to-use iOS/Android app to assign more-specific behavioral traits afterward."

After submitting her version of an application to work at Google (addressed to "google boss"), she waited for a response. But instead of the dreaded non-response or generic form letter, she received a letter from the company's CEO, Sundar Pichai, just a few days later.

Google confirmed the letters between the tech CEO and young girl from Hereford, England, are real.

On March 4… a Saturday morning… at 9am Central, I’m going to host a little web broadcast all about Beebots and Beginning Coding.  I’ll probably be drinking coffee, might have crazy messy morning hair and my dog might even make an appearance if she pulls her typical move of trying to drink out of my coffee cup.  It will be just a conversation from me to you, that I’m going to lead and share my own experiences.  Just one teacher to another. Because this stuff is everything I believe in and if I can help even ONE teacher bring robotics and coding into the classroom, my Saturday morning was well spent.

Binary Code Necklace

Binary Code Necklace | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Here’s a computer science lesson and craft activity that speaks to my geeky heart.  I do it with groups of all ages, and it would be perfect for Activity Day girls. It could also work for Cub Scouts, perhaps with a hemp cord for a masculine look. It was inspired by the Code.org-sponsored “Hour of Code” event last year. The lesson plan by Thinkersmith is excellent,  and covers everything you need to know. It is comprehensive enough for someone without any computer science background to run the activity successfully. I’ll summarize a few points here, but you should go read it. The necklace craft was my own addition. My daughter is modeling her necklace in the photo at left.

How to Create Easy DIY MaKeyMaKey Storage - @DianaLRendina #makered #pure #genius  | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
When I first started the Stewart Makerspace back in 2014, one of the earliest tools that I purchased was a MaKeyMaKey.  My students loved it, and because they are so affordable (only $50 each) I was able to get a set of 10 of them through a DonorsChoose project, allowing students to work on longer term projects without having to take it apart everytime.  However, storing that many MaKeyMaKeys can be tricky.  I started out with keeping them in the original boxes and storing them all together in a large plastic box, but it became difficult to wrangle all the wires back in each time.

Podcasts and the Classroom | Edudemic

Podcasts and the Classroom | Edudemic | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Chances are, even if you’ve never listened to a podcast before, you’ve heard about one. Podcasts bring old-time radio programs into the 21st century, and, thanks to their in-depth topic exploration and episodic nature, they’re downright addictive for listeners; the popular true-crime podcast Serial, for example, has been downloaded over 5 million times.

The popularity of podcasts makes them a great learning tool in the classroom. In one classroom in Connecticut, podcasts have even taken the place of final papers and exams, much to the students’ delight. Beyond their popularity, podcasts can be a great way to engage different kinds of learners, disseminate information, and get students excited about out-of-the-box assignments. Here’s how 21st-century educators can harness the power of podcasts in the classroom:
