The ‘Connected Kinders’: Turning iPad Experiments into Adventures in Innovative Learning (EdSurge News)

The ‘Connected Kinders’: Turning iPad Experiments into Adventures in Innovative Learning (EdSurge News) | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"What would you do with $20,000 and the freedom to use it all for edtech in your classroom?

Last spring, a private donor funded an experiment. As an Eagle Cliffs Elementary classroom teacher in Billings, Montana, I had the opportunity to write to our Billings Education Foundation for a mini-classroom grant--a mere one thousand dollars. My classroom grant idea? Simple: two iPads.

The idea caught the eye of Mr. Wardell, a generous annual donor to the Foundation’s classroom grants, who then asked, “What would you really like to do in your classroom, and what would you need to equip your room the way you would prefer?”

If there was ever an opportunity to dream big, this was it."

Millennials Are Out-Reading Older Generations

Millennials Are Out-Reading Older Generations | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"Kids today with their selfies and their Snapchats and their love of literature.

Millennials, like each generation that was young before them, tend to attract all kinds of ire from their elders for being superficial, self-obsessed, anti-intellectuals. But a study out today from the Pew Research Center offers some vindication for the younger set. Millennials are reading more books than the over-30 crowd, Pew found in a survey of more than 6,000 Americans."

Mel Riddile's curator insight, September 11, 3:34 PM

This is no accident! The increased emphasis on developing literacy skills, particularly in adolescents, has helped encourage more reading among the under 30 population. It is my hope that, with the emphasis on literacy as a shared responsibility across all content areas, students will be reading more and will read and write even more as adults.

WEAC's curator insight, September 14, 9:45 AM

Surprised? Pew Research Center says Millennials are reading more books than the over-30 crowd.

No, There Isn't an App For That - Another Way

No, There Isn't an App For That - Another Way | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"About a year ago I first heard Greg Kulowiec of EdTechTeacher talk about App Smashing. App Smashing is the process of using multiple apps together to create a single product. The power of the iPad isn’t about one or two innovative apps. It’s about finding creative ways to get apps to work together (smashing them together to get something new).

Drawing Pad does some cool stuff. So does Chrome. So does Explain Everything. So does iMovie. So does Book Creator. But all of them have their own limitations. Each of them lack some really creative features. But at the same time, each of them does some amazing things the others don’t. The power of the iPad is in getting those apps to work together to do some truly creative stuff."
