‘Follow your passion’ is wrong, here are 7 habits you need instead

‘Follow your passion’ is wrong, here are 7 habits you need instead | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
It’s common wisdom. Near gospel really, and not just among young people and founders. Across generational lines, sentiments like those from Steve Jobs’ 2005 commencement at Stanford have been engraved into our collective consciousness:

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.”

In other words, follow your passion. There’s just one problem: “‘Follow your passion’ is dangerous advice.”

That’s a troubling claim, but it comes straight from Cal Newport’s investigation into “the details of how passionate people like Steve Jobs really got started” as well as what scientists say predicts happiness and fuels great accomplishment.

Newport’s not alone. In recent years, a host of leaders, academics, and entrepreneurs have all come to the same startling conclusion: nearly everything you’ve been told about following your passion is wrong.

Here are seven habits you need instead.

6 Great Apps for Teaching Kids About Important Health Topics | Emerging Education Technologies | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Health education is one of the most important parts of schooling, but current techniques and curriculum tend to be a bit outdated — old books and even older information is being reiterated over and over, teaching the next generation dated science about how the body works.

Even when the info was current, these old teaching methods go in one ear and out the other for many in this generation — they’re immersed in technology from a very young age, often before they’re old enough to speak or walk. Health apps are the best high-tech way to teach kids about their bodies and how to keep them in shape. What are the best health apps for teaching K-12 students about health?

8 digital skills we must teach our children - We Forum

8 digital skills we must teach our children - We Forum | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
The digital world is a vast expanse of learning and entertainment. But it is in this digital world that kids are also exposed to many risks, such as cyberbullying, technology addiction, obscene and violent content, radicalization, scams and data theft. The problem lies in the fast and ever evolving nature of the digital world, where proper internet governance and policies for child protection are slow to catch up, rendering them ineffective.

Moreover, there is the digital age gap. The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

So how can we, as parents, educators and leaders, prepare our children for the digital age? Without a doubt, it is critical for us to equip them with digital intelligence.

#Reinventing #Education with #Makerspaces - EduTech 4 Teachers

#Reinventing #Education with #Makerspaces - EduTech 4 Teachers | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Last summer my good friend, colleague and our elementary principal, Dr. Terri Harpster, and I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Pittsburgh FabLab hosted by Dr. Todd Keruskin and the Elizabeth Forward School District. This four day event exposed us to the super popular maker movement sweeping our country and more importantly, inspired us to reinvent learning for the students in our district.

Upon our return from this experience, we developed a blueprint to transform some of our existing spaces into modern-day learning areas that encourage students to become makers, inventors, coders and responsible digital citizens. And then we actually worked with a number of individuals—the B-A School Board, administration, the BASD Foundation, community members, teachers and students—to make the vision become a reality!

This is our story…

The skills your kids should cultivate to be competitive in the age of automation - Quartz

The skills your kids should cultivate to be competitive in the age of automation - Quartz | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
We’re all getting used to the thought that in a not-so-distant future, competition for jobs won’t just be other humans, it will also be an intelligent robot, self-driving car, or other artificial agent. But in our gut, we know this can’t be the full truth, that there’s a more nuanced story. We at least believe that elite human skills will remain valuable even as automation eats the world. The hard part is figuring out which ones will be the most valuable and where they will be the most prized.

Q. I was browsing online and noticed a small letter “i” in a circle. What does that mean? I use the Chrome browser.

A. The web is full of sites that do not use the strongest security, and some browsers — including Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox — now warn users when the page they are visiting may put their information at risk. In Chrome, that “i” symbol indicates a site may not be secure because it is using an unencrypted connection to exchange data with your computer. When you click the “i” on the left side of the Chrome address bar, you can see more information about the site, adjust some settings and possibly see a “Your connection to this site is not secure” warning.
