Lightbot is a Brilliant Introduction to Coding for Children - iPads in the Classroom

Lightbot is a Brilliant Introduction to Coding for Children - iPads in the Classroom | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"Programming is essentially a set of commands that dictate what happens in a piece of software, such as a website or application. If you’re going to start teaching programming to students, maybe with a Raspberry Pi, Lightbot is a really fun place to start. In Lightbot, you use basic commands to control a robot, whose job is to turn all the blue tiles yellow by navigating to them and lighting them up."

How Teachers Can Create Videos That Engage Students - Education Week | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
As a teacher, you may think slick production is the way to go in building engaging learning videos, but new data shows that variables within your control (and budget!) have more of an impact.

Michail Darley's curator insight, Today, 1:11 AM

This made me sit up with interest. Home made and imperfect videos for learning have more impact than slick, commercial ones if a few simple rules are followed. A must read!

"Sharing current events with students is so important but it is often challenging to find appropriate content for elementary schoolers.  News-O-Matic is a daily newspaper for kids available on both iOS and Android devices (the app will soon be available on the Amazon Kindle Fire tablets).  It provides engaging nonfiction text for  young readers to help them learn about the world around them.  With topics including election news, sports coverage and science discoveries, there is plenty of exciting content to capture the attention of your students."

5 Lessons Drawn from the LAUSD iPad Fiasco - iPads in Education Blog

5 Lessons Drawn from the LAUSD iPad Fiasco - iPads in Education Blog | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"It’s becoming difficult to read the news in Los Angeles these days without running across yet another article about the problems faced by the sputtering LAUSD iPad initiative. Finally, LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy announced this week that they were suspending the contracts with Apple and Pearson amid increasing scrutiny and investigation of the bidding process. According to Deasy, “it will also give us time to take into account concerns raised surrounding the project”.

There were always valid questions surrounding a bidding process that granted enormous contracts for digital courses that had not yet been developed. It’s unfortunate however that an investigation into the bidding process became the catalyst for the project’s suspension when it was the planning and implementation that fell woefully short in so many areas. Hindsight may be 20-20 but many were already pointing out substantial flaws in the plan at its initial announcement.

As educators we know that failure is the breeding ground for learning and adapting. With that in mind, here are 5 lessons that can be drawn from the LAUSD iPad experience."

Two Great Periodic Tables of Educational iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Two Great Periodic Tables of Educational iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"Today as I was wading through my Twitter feeds I came across a link to the periodic table of iPad apps created by ICTEvangelist.Upon checking this work I learned that it is inspired by a relatively similar work done by Sean Junkins which I have featured in an earlier post in this blog. Different as they are, both of these periodic tables provide an interesting collection of educational iPad apps you could probably consider using with your students. These apps are arranged under different categories and each of these categories  has a unique colour code to help you identify apps belonging it. The labelling of the categories in these two periodic tables slightly differ from one another with ICTEvangelist tending to repurpose his work for UK-based educational settings."

A Whole New World of Apps (for the Under 13 Generation) - Hooked On INNOVATION

A Whole New World of Apps (for the Under 13 Generation) - Hooked On INNOVATION | iPads in Education | Scoop.it

"As students fill the hallways of our schools on their first day back, there is a major change afoot for those kids under the age of 13.  Students in the pre-teen realm have always had less options when it came to personalization and use of certain websites/social media.  While some of those rules still apply when it comes to the web, Apple’s new system of allowing districts to issue Apple IDs for those students under the age of 13 (with parental consent) means that the days of every elementary students having the same standardized iPad are in the past.  Combining that with the new deployment system and (in our case) an MDM like Casper, and we are finally starting to see some of the real powerful potential of the 1:1 iPad platform.  While I know there will be some glitches (there always are in technology), I’m looking forward to the improvements listed here this year for our K-6 students."

The iPad Education Revolution Stalls Out - Gizmodo

The iPad Education Revolution Stalls Out - Gizmodo | iPads in Education | Scoop.it
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported that its sprawling hometown's school system, the second largest in the US, would be withdrawing from last year's ambitious promise to supply all 640,000 students with an iPad. Good. The Los Angeles United School District just dodged a $1 billion, tablet-shaped bullet.
John Evans's insight:

No solution is perfect. But the message that should be taken away from this story is that there needs to be a great deal of homework done by the right people in your school, division or district to come up with an effective plan for implementation of any technology initiative. JE
