Call me a heretic but I don't see great value in games that have players stealing cars and beating up innocent bystanders. I'd rather see children have fun playing games while also learning important skills as a byproduct. In that spirit, I've started a list of educational iPad game apps for casual home use. They don't necessarily help you master long division or prepare for an upcoming geography test. The accent is primarily on having fun. The second important criterion is that time spent playing is productive and that something of value is learned.

What follows is the third of a four-part series, listing the best 50 iPad books for kids, broken down by age. You can see our first list (for toddlers) here: http://digitalmediadiet.com/?p=1645. Our second list (for preschoolers) is here: http://digitalmediadiet.com/?p=1683 This list is of apps that are appropriate for kids aged six to nine, although many are also quite enjoyable for children a bit younger and older than this range. In order to help educators integrate iPads effectively, we have compiled a list of apps focused on learning goals consistent with the CRCD framework. While many of these apps have also appeared in our iPads in the Classroom section, this list is driven by specific learning goals that promote critical-thinking, creativity, collaboration, and the creation of student-centric learning environments.

I have been conducting workshops on iPad integration with EdTechTeacher and I thought it might be helpful to pull together a back to school list of apps structured around specific classroom goals. While many schools may already have an Apple VPP program already in place, I know a number of teachers will also be purchasing the apps themselves. Therefore, I will do my best to include both a pay & free app for each objective.
