Resources for Using iPads in Grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 by Monica Burns - Edutopia | iPads in Edu | Scoop.it

Edutopia is one of my favourite web sites. It has recently run a series written by Monica Burns aka @ClassTechTips featuring Resources for Using iPads across multiple grade levels. Though I've featured them each individually here on iPads in Education I thought it might be useful to post all of the series in one collection.

Free Technology for Teachers: Two Free Google Apps that Bring Out the Best In an iPad

Free Technology for Teachers: Two Free Google Apps that Bring Out the Best In an iPad | iPads in Edu | Scoop.it

"Many of us using technology in the classroom find ourselves caught between two worlds: Apple and Google. Apple’s iPad is a fantastic tool in the classroom which provides students with various opportunities to consume, create, and communicate. Similar to a swiss-army knife, it is only limited by how we choose to use it. At the same time, Google apps provide students with cloud-based services, from search to document creation and sharing, that work seamlessly on iPad."

Excellent Classroom Poster Featuring 10 iPad Usage Rules ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads in Edu | Scoop.it

"ere is another wonderful iPad graphic from TechChef4u ( one of my favourite edtech blogs ). The graphic is entitled : MS iPad Oath and features 10 things students need to abide by when using their iPads in the classroom. I have gone through the list and found it really great. In fact students need to abide by these rules wherever they are using iPads be it at school, home or anywhere else. However, TechChef4u has designed this graphic for those intending to use district-owned iPads and this is why she includes rules number 7 and to some extent number 2 as well."

iPads in Teaching - What Are They For? - Ideas Out There

iPads in Teaching - What Are They For? - Ideas Out There | iPads in Edu | Scoop.it

"This picture was drawn in response to a post called 'Drawing On A Napkin: Is This How iPads Function In A Traditional Classroom?' by the esteemed Terry Heick.

Mine was not drawn on a napkin, but on Notability. And, to answer that snarky Johannesburg based iPad trainer who cannot believe I can do what I do using the iPad, yes I did create it myself!

This is what I think iPads are 'for' in education. Let me know what you think."

That about sums it up...However as a teacher spends more time with the iPad and is able to use it as tool to help extend the walls of the classroom, and sees how students collaborate, problem solve, and create the teacher realizes that the iPad is just a tool and it is how he/she uses it in class that will make all the difference in the world.  Kinda like IWB; once upon a time if you had an IWB in your classroom regardless of how it was being used one thought they were effectively integrating technology in the curriculum.  Now many classrooms do not have IWB because they are not student centered!

This is a very interesting article that I enjoyed reading very much. Since I already use iPads in the classroom, I was reflecting on how to engage with other non-iPad users and how to encourage them to use the iPads effectively. I liked how on number 7 talks about utilizing content-creation apps and not just content-specific apps. I usually try using applications that are generic and that can be used for multiple subjects. My students really like using shadow puppet to teach different lessons or explain something they learned. These types of applications are not limited just to one specific subject and are perfect for students to get exposed to technology that embraces creativity and higher levels of thinking.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, February 23, 2014 6:23 PM

I've heard a lot about SMAR but never really taken the time to look into it. It might be time now that I'm looking at integrating more technology into my classroom. This model clearly supports technology and expects the use of it.

Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 27, 2014 6:42 PM

Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 4, 2014 8:34 PM

Do you use iPads in your school? Do you work with Bloom's Taxonomy and/or SAMR? Are you interested in seeing how you might combine Bloom's and SAMR using specific apps? If so, click through to this post.

The post takes apps and organizes in three categories:

* Consumption - which includes Knowledge and Analysis (split into Activity and Gamification)

* Collaboration - which includes Application and Synthesis (split into Assessment and Cloud Storage)

* Creation - which includes Comprehension and Evaluate (split into Multimedia & Design and Multimedia Texts)

Then read on and see how you might take these same areas and apply them to SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition).

This is worth a look even if you do not have iPads. The ideas of placing work into the three Cs of Consumption, Collaboration and Creation may be applied to work that students do, with or without technology.

Without using any other Apps at all students have the opportunity to document their work by photo, reflect on their work by videoing themselves responding.  They can also edit their photos to focus or zoom in on an aspect.  They can create folders of photos to organise their work and then create slideshows that they could Airplay in class"

How To Overcome The iPad Learning Curve - Teachers With Apps

How To Overcome The iPad Learning Curve - Teachers With Apps | iPads in Edu | Scoop.it

" Technology can make life a lot easier in the classroom. In the past criticism was often aimed at new technology coming into the classroom, recent advances in tech have made drastic changes to the learning environment.

This has actually been the case for numerous generations. When televisions were introduced to schools and kindergartens, many people were outraged at the invasion of technology into the educational process but of course, television became an integral part of the learning process. It is therefore fair to say that when used properly, tablets such as the iPad can be used effectively in the classroom."

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"
