The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom | IPad Implementation in High Schools | Scoop.it
The school has an unconventional take on the iPad’s purpose. The devices are not really valued as portable screens or mobile gaming devices. Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students’ creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students’ experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it.

Yet another important read which makes the point that it's important "to recognize that it’s the adults and students around the iPads."

How to Roll Out a 1:1 iPad Program

How to Roll Out a 1:1 iPad Program | IPad Implementation in High Schools | Scoop.it

"When The Westside School decided to grow its established primary school into a leading middle school program, parents, teachers, students and administrators mapped out an integrated project-based learning environment designed to engage and challenge all participants. The planning team made a list of skills and tools that would support learning, and decided on a 1:1 iPad program to support their vision. I was brought on as technology coordinator to plan and support the curricular and technical deployment for the start of the 2011-12 school year."

Guided Access in the New iOS 6

"From the perspective of a Special Education teacher, limiting distractions while working on an iOS device is a necessity. In previous versions of iOS, you could easily quit working in an app simply by pressing the Home button. Students understand this functionality well and can quickly become engaged in an activity other than what the teacher had intended. Guided Access iOS 6 will allow teachers to minimize distractions, keeping students engage in working with an app until they’re ready to wrap up the lesson."

Apps in Education: Monster List of iBook Tutorials

Apps in Education: Monster List of iBook Tutorials | IPad Implementation in High Schools | Scoop.it

"There are numerous sites that are now offering Tutorials and how-to guides for creating ebooks in iBook Author. As teachers are now comfortable with the idea of creating their own e-textbooks more and more people are looking for resources to learn how to build touch enabled books that take full advantage of the iPad capabilities. Inserting video and high resolution photographs is one thing but how about inserting 3D manipulatives and models that are touch sensitive. Here is a list of some of the resources online. If you know of other good ones please add them in the comments section and we will update the list."

iPads improving learning – what the research tells us

"I was at an event at a school the other day running hands on iPad sessions for parents and I was challenged to prove that students using iPads would improve learning. This was a tough call on the spot and given the fact ICT has not been proven to have a positive quantitative impact on learning yet – despite the best efforts of Becta.

I did point to the Essa Academy’s success with its GCSE results but this did not cut much ice. I therefore started doing some research. I hope this is of some use – to really understand what these studies have uncovered you will need to follow the links."

How Tech Will Transform the Traditional Classroom

How Tech Will Transform the Traditional Classroom | IPad Implementation in High Schools | Scoop.it
Tech allows students to learn in new and engaging ways, but many educators are struggling to incorporate digital into traditional classrooms.

"As the post-PC era moves from interesting theory to cold, hard reality, one of the most pressing questions is: How can we use tablets, and especially the iPad, to help people learn?

Most of the focus has been on ebooks replacing textbooks, a trend fueled by Apple’s recent updates to iBooks. Specifically, the company released iBooks Author, a tool for creating immersive ebooks on the desktop."
