What motivates people to work? Most people would say money, and those people would only be partially correct. In Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, author Daniel Pink writes about radical practices implemented by Australian software company Atlassian and search engine giant Google that have taught us a lot about what really motivates human beings to work. Hint: it is not the proverbial carrot on a stick.

edutopia: Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric

edutopia: Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric | iPads | Scoop.it
While many teachers are excited about the maker movement and may even be creating projects for their classrooms, assessment can be puzzling even to veteran classroom teachers. How can teachers prove that deep, rich learning is occurring through making? How do we justify a grade to students and parents alike, especially to the student who "just isn’t good at art"? By crafting a three-part rubric that assesses process, understanding, and product, teachers can rest assured that they are covering all the bases.

A 2013 Pew study revealed that only 35 percent of teachers at the lowest income schools allow their students to look up information on their mobile devices, as compared to 52 percent of teachers at wealthier schools. And while 70 percent of teachers working in high income areas say their schools do a good job providing resources and support to effectively integrate technology into the classroom, only 50 percent of teachers in low-income areas agree.

Miss Smith's 1st Grade: App-tastic Ideas for Building the Classroom Community

Miss Smith's 1st Grade: App-tastic Ideas for Building the Classroom Community | iPads | Scoop.it

"With school beginning just around the corner, I've been thinking of some app-tastic ideas to begin the school year.  Each year as I had a fresh group of students, I always began the year with classroom community building activities to help everyone get to know one another.  I felt this was a valuable time for me as the teacher to learn more about my students and for  them to learn a little about each other.  As we built our classroom community, I was always hunting for the small connections, the ways to show the students "you matter" and "I care."

I thought I would show some ways to take the normal get to know each other activities and add a technology twist to them.  "

""The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." - Albert Einstein

We do not need to teach creativity, but rather inspire its daily practice. Somewhere along the way, we simply forgot to honor this innate gift and how to access its power. Our role as educators is to encourage learning experiences that increase the ability to recognize and listen to our inner voice."

Rebecca Louise Melia's curator insight, April 9, 6:32 PM

After researching their own life and milestones, students can create a list of significant events and then use this simple app to create a timeline of their lives. Timelines can be made using "before birth", and then each year of age so far. Creating a timeline can also be linked mathematics as it involves "sequencing events" (Mae-13MG) (Board of Studies, NSW, 2014).

The finished timeline acts as a form of formative assessment, as it is a physical representation of their understanding of life events and their ability to use the technology. Students can be questioned about their work to assess their progress - In order to do this successfully students should be asked some closed questions, followed by open-ended questions, requiring some explanation (McMillan, 2011, p.118). Questions could include "What would come next on your timeline?" and "Do you think everyone would have the same timeline as you? Why?".
