Excellent iPad App to Introduce your Kids to Coding ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Excellent iPad App to Introduce your Kids to Coding ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads | Scoop.it

Code Blast is an excellent coding app that has gone free today for a limited period of time. This app is designed to provide young learners and kids with a solid initiation into the world of programming concepts and problem solving.

Code Blast teaches kids coding through fun and engaging activities consisting of programming a rocket to reach its final destination without being damaged by UFOs and other electric barriers found in its course. In running the mission, kids get to develop a series of key programming concepts and thinking skills such as : precise and accurate programming, forward planning to solve anticipated problems, ordering instructions sequentially and many more.

Rebecca Louise Melia's curator insight, April 9, 2015 6:32 PM

After researching their own life and milestones, students can create a list of significant events and then use this simple app to create a timeline of their lives. Timelines can be made using "before birth", and then each year of age so far. Creating a timeline can also be linked mathematics as it involves "sequencing events" (Mae-13MG) (Board of Studies, NSW, 2014).

The finished timeline acts as a form of formative assessment, as it is a physical representation of their understanding of life events and their ability to use the technology. Students can be questioned about their work to assess their progress - In order to do this successfully students should be asked some closed questions, followed by open-ended questions, requiring some explanation (McMillan, 2011, p.118). Questions could include "What would come next on your timeline?" and "Do you think everyone would have the same timeline as you? Why?".

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic | iPads | Scoop.it

"We have come to a point in the education technology journey where it seems rather dull to still be asking if the iPad is the right device for the classroom. The answer, in case you’ve missed the last few years of debate is that it is a great option, but this is not universally accepted and never will be. Nonetheless, one of the attributes you’ll hear put forward is that it is easy to use because of the intuitive nature of iOS. This is absolutely true; you can put the iPad into the hands of almost any child and within a short period of time they will have mastered it.

So does it then follow that you can out the iPad into the hands of teachers and expect the same results?

No."

The emphasis on iPads is a bit of a distraction here - the issue is related more to the ability of teachers to create engaging learnng opportunities where technology use extends and enhances the students' capacity for self-direction, information literacy, collaboration. culural awareness, etc... be it with an iPad or other ICT, the point is that too many teachers still rely on delivery and control, rather than authentic opportunities for learning.

How to Use Scratch for Digital Storytelling - graphite

How to Use Scratch for Digital Storytelling - graphite | iPads | Scoop.it

"Digital storytelling involves combining digital media (images, voice narration, music, text, or motion) to tell a story. Over the past few years, digital storytelling has become an increasingly popular and effective way for students to meet a range of learning goals in the classroom. Scratch, a programming project from the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, might be an unexpected tool for digital storytelling. But using Scratch to tell a story is a “twofer”: Students practice important ELA skills and at the same time use computational thinking."
