Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it

If you own an e-reader you often can only buy e-books from the bookstore that is bundled on your device. Many of the budget e-readers out there don’t even have a bookstore that is accessible by users and many people are left to fend for themselves to load content on it.

Here is a comprehensive free e-book resource catalog online. All of these books are hardware agnostic, which means they are not locked by DRM (Digital Rights Management). All you have to do is simply download a title and load in via the USB cable from your computer to your e-reader. Many of these sites also provide the books in more than one format, so they will work with your Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony e-reader and hundreds of others.

EdTechTeam: The How (and Why) It's Time to Create Digital Portfolios

EdTechTeam: The How (and Why) It's Time to Create Digital Portfolios | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
Digital Student Portfolios are becoming more important now than ever! Students are creating and remixing information like never before – and where is all that amazing work going? At my old school it was wiped off the devices at the end of the year – a heart-wrenching idea that I was personally against. This is why we need to publish student work in one place and let it serve as a home of student reflection, and a become a destination to unleash student pride and curiosity.

There are many reasons to begin the journey to digital portfolios – here are just a few.

How to install iOS 8.1 on your iPhone and iPad — Even if you're low on storage!

How to install iOS 8.1 on your iPhone and iPad — Even if you're low on storage! | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
iOS 8.1 will run on iPhone 4s and newer, iPad 2 and newer, and iPod touch 5. If you have enough available storage space on your device, you can install it using Software Update. If you're already running iOS 8, storage shouldn't be a problem. If you're still on iOS 7, you'll have to pay closer attention and may need to update using iTunes instead.

I know that storage runs low as we use our iPads and iPhones more and more as cameras and download more and more apps.  Now maybe I don't have to spend time deciding which apps and pictures to delete just so I can upgrade to the latest iOS. Just hook up to iTunes on your computer.  It's so simple I forgot I could do it!

Retiring an old iPad? Back it up first - USA TODAY

Retiring an old iPad? Back it up first - USA TODAY | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
Q: If I retire my old iPad for one of the new models, how do I make sure all of my data is off the tablet and none of it is left behind before donating or selling it?

A: Apple's instructions and interface to reset an iOS device have a refreshing simplicity — the process itself is identical in iOS 7 and iOS 8.

But the documentation and the user experience leave out steps you shouldn't neglect before getting your data off an iPad or other iOS device and restoring it to factory condition for resale or donation.

Are We Marking Assignments or Assessing Learning? - Connected Principals

Are We Marking Assignments or Assessing Learning? - Connected Principals | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
There has been much focus on shifting our assessment practices in education and, particularly in BC, moving toward more Assessment For Learning (or formative assessment) in schools.  This is such an important conversation and needed change but at some point along the way, Assessment OF Learning (or summative assessment) has been given a bad rap.  To have sound assessment practices in a classroom and school, we need a solid balance of ongoing formative assessment (click here for more info) as well as an effective way to verify that learning has occurred (summative).  Formative assessment should be where we spend most of our time, but summative assessments are still very important.

Kathy Schrock: 6 Apps That Target Higher-Order Thinking Skills -- THE Journal | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:
raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.

A Third Grader’s Plea For More Game-Based Learning - MindShift | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it

"Third grader Cordell Steiner makes a pretty convincing argument for using video games in the classroom in this TEDx talk. He describes feeling more motivated to learn and master new skills because of his eagerness to beat his own high score or finish before the clock runs out. He says he used to be bored in class when his teachers had to slow down to explain concepts, but now each student plays games intended to help him or her with specific skills they’re trying to master. He even gives examples!"

Inquiry Learning Ideas for Math and Science With iPads - Mind/Shift

Inquiry Learning Ideas for Math and Science With iPads - Mind/Shift | iPads and Other Tablets in Education | Scoop.it
This chapter looks at tools that can be used with the iPad to help you investigate phenomena and collect data. After you collect that data, you look at tools that help analyze the information and present conclusions. You focus less on apps and instead discuss the “application” of mobile technology within a more inquiry-based approach to science and math education. It should be fun!

Whether it’s geometry, physics, or chemistry, scientific method starts with research, discussion, and the development of a hypothesis about the phenomenon being examined. A substantial amount of space in this book is devoted to research, communication, organization, and sharing of information — all important elements in the research and development stage. You start by jumping to the next step: using the iPad for investigating and gathering data for analysis.
