Apple launch new iPad 'Apps for Teachers' section - Mark Anderson's Blog | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it

"Further recognition of the massive adoption of iPad by so many schools around the world, Apple have just launched two new sections on their iPad App Store. One section is aimed at teachers and parents with apps for the children, broken down in to different age groups and learning activities. "

Good, but for teachers in New Zealand the curriculum and professional development still needs to be connecged to these resources. Teachers can do this, of course, but wouldn't it be nice if there were some resources available which make those connections?

Richard Whiteside's curator insight, October 7, 2013 4:56 AM

But are these apps really any good for education?

Liebe Eltern, liebe Lehrer/innen, liebe Kinder-App-Interessierte,

Apps in Education: Hyperlinks in Book Creator | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it

"I had a great day today in a 4th grade classroom of over 70 students working on a guided inquiry task. Each time I have had the pleasure to be invited into this class the students have taught me new things. Today was no exception. Many students were presenting aspects of their research in Book Creator.

We had a vigorous discussion about the best way to acknowledge images and  references they had accessed as part of their research. One young lady wanted a hyperlinked bibliography and within minutes we had crowd sourced ways of doing this. Here is a little video tutorial that has been informed entirely by the great workflows developed by the Yr 4 students at Holy Spirit. Thanks everyone. Today was fantastic!"

A flipped classroom is sometimes the best teaching/learning model some teachers have to use with  their students. The use of technology in a flipped classroom should never be regarded as a supplicant of the teacher but only a complimentary element that increases students learning outcomes.  I have talked a lot and in more details about the flipped classroom and have also devoted an entire section here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning for tutorials, guides, and presentations on the use of a flipped learning methodology. I invite you to check it out HERE.

Kleinspiration: An App to Assess Reading Fluency: @FluencyFinder! | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it

"FluencyFinder http://www.fluencyfinder.com/ the popular educational iOS app for determining Reading Fluency has just recently released their long awaited update.

What is FluencyFinder?  FluencyFinder is a fantastically simple teaching tool for educators wanting to assess student’s Reading Level (Grades 1st-8th).  This is done by printing out a Reading passage (6 per grade level w/ more on the way) and then having the student read while following along on an iOS device (iPad/iPhone).  The teacher will begin the assessment by starting the app timer and then tap (+) or (-) as a student makes or corrects a mistake.  When the student is finished the teacher will end the timer and then press the finish assessment button to get instant real-time results.  These detailed results will include WPM, word counts, number of mistakes and more."

Gabrielle Dunn's curator insight, September 10, 2013 11:49 PM

This a great tool that teachers can use in the classroom to assess reading fluency. The app will provide information on where mistakes were made which will allow teachers to get a more detailed report on a students reading ability. This can then go on to determine reading groups in the classroom and will allow the teacher to work with students to improve in areas they struggle with.

18 iPad uses: How classrooms are benefiting from Apple's tablets

18 iPad uses: How classrooms are benefiting from Apple's tablets | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it

iPads are quickly becoming a popular and powerful educational tool for classrooms. Beyond the immediate benefit of engaging students, iPads can improve education efficiency and standards. However, many teachers are unsure of how to use them effectively. Coupled with concerns over the costs involved, iPad implementation in schools is seen as an unnecessary and expensive risk.

As the case studies below demonstrate, iPads are being used in education environments around the world with great success. Teachers can have paperless classrooms, take attendance, share interactive presentations and test their students—all on their iPad.

So just what are they doing? Education Dive has compiled a list:

Teacher-Helper 1.0.1 Free for iOS - Multi-Function App for All Teachers

Teacher-Helper 1.0.1 Free for iOS - Multi-Function App for All Teachers | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it
Teacher-Helper 1.0.1 for iOS, a multi-function app for teachers that takes a colorful, graphical approach to class rosters, schedules, grades, and notes.

...

MultiEducator today is pleased to introduce Teacher-Helper1.0.1 for iOS, its free, multi-function app for teachers that takes a colorful, graphical approach to class rosters, schedules, grades, and notes. Teachers can choose any of their classes from the chalkboard opening screen, revealing its full-screen bulletin board, which displays the days, times, and locations of the class. Color-coded file tabs offer instant access to Attendance, Participation, Assignments, Student Lists, and Notes & Emails. The app allows teachers to select how much each grade the student has received over the semester counts toward the final grade.

Feature Highlights:

* Keep track of each of your different classes

* Maintain attendance records

* Follow student participation

* Post and track assignments

* Place your assignments on a calendar (iPad version includes a custom calendar)

* Grade assignments

* Write a note about a student

* Send a group email to all parents or students in a particular class

* Save a note and/or email the note to the student or to his/her parents, directly from within the app

* Calculate final grades (set percentages for weighted grading)

With bright colors and a classroom motif, Teacher-Helper is the ideal app for helping teachers keep all their records and notes in a single app. Not just a convenient alternative to paper records, the app takes advantage of the technology built into smart devices. For example, teachers can include thumbnail photos beside the name of each student; send emails directly to students and parents from within the app; send group emails; quickly email administrators; allow the app to calculate final grades, specifying the weighting of each test, quiz, project, assignment, and daily participation grade; and set an alert notification 5 or 10 minutes before a class ends.

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning | ipad2learn #iPad #E-Learning #schreiben #lernen #m-learning | Scoop.it
We don’t want iPads to just become replacements for notebooks and textbooks, we want them to be objects to think with. We want students using them to mess around with the world around them and their courses of study.

...

"Imagine walking up to a stream. On the far side lies our ideal learning environment — student-centric, inquiry-based, resource-rich — our Someday. A series of stepping stones indicates a way across. These are our Mondays; achievable objectives interspersed across a torrent of new technologies, practices, and theories. This Someday/Monday dichotomy captures one of the core challenges in teacher professional development around educational technology. As we look across to the opposite bank, we can see that the deep integration of new learning technologies into classrooms requires substantially rethinking pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, and teacher practice (Someday). However, as teachers, we need stepping stones (Mondays), and one of the easiest ways to gain experience with emerging tools is through individual projects or units. Teachers recognize the need to imagine a new future, to move towards the creation of innovative learning environments that provide our students with the best possible experience (Someday). In the meantime, we seek out a path of connected Mondays."
