I was going to include these thoughts as part of my weekly reflection about using iPads in the classroom but the further my mind delved the more distant I seemed to get from the basic pedagogy which I was trying to record in those weekly posts.

"Further recognition of the massive adoption of iPad by so many schools around the world, Apple have just launched two new sections on their iPad App Store. One section is aimed at teachers and parents with apps for the children, broken down in to different age groups and learning activities. "

"I had a great day today in a 4th grade classroom of over 70 students working on a guided inquiry task. Each time I have had the pleasure to be invited into this class the students have taught me new things. Today was no exception. Many students were presenting aspects of their research in Book Creator.
We had a vigorous discussion about the best way to acknowledge images and references they had accessed as part of their research. One young lady wanted a hyperlinked bibliography and within minutes we had crowd sourced ways of doing this. Here is a little video tutorial that has been informed entirely by the great workflows developed by the Yr 4 students at Holy Spirit. Thanks everyone. Today was fantastic!"
Wondering about speech to text iPad apps? That's a bit different than text to speech or OCR to speech solutions previously featured in this blog.
For now, these are the options I've seen that are focused on speech to text:
Dragon Dictation (Free) - "Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages"Voice Texting Pro (Free) - "...Speak into the microphone and convert your speech into text. Then directly send your message to e-mail, sms, Twitter or Facebook. You can also send it to your clipboard (copy) and paste the dictated text in any other application."Speech Notes (Free) - "Speech Notes is a note taking app that can convert speech with the help of internet connection. Just tap on mic button and once done hit again to start converting voice to text." Voice Assistant ($1.99) - "Voice Assistant Translates Your Voice into Text and Sends It to Virtually Any Other iPhone/iPad App" via LifeHacker
Jim Lerman's insight:
I think this is just such a powerful technology. I'm constantly amazed at how few people use it. I wrote most of my last book using speech-to text-software. It is such a timesaver!

A flipped classroom is sometimes the best teaching/learning model some teachers have to use with their students. The use of technology in a flipped classroom should never be regarded as a supplicant of the teacher but only a complimentary element that increases students learning outcomes. I have talked a lot and in more details about the flipped classroom and have also devoted an entire section here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning for tutorials, guides, and presentations on the use of a flipped learning methodology. I invite you to check it out HERE.

"FluencyFinder http://www.fluencyfinder.com/ the popular educational iOS app for determining Reading Fluency has just recently released their long awaited update.
What is FluencyFinder? FluencyFinder is a fantastically simple teaching tool for educators wanting to assess student’s Reading Level (Grades 1st-8th). This is done by printing out a Reading passage (6 per grade level w/ more on the way) and then having the student read while following along on an iOS device (iPad/iPhone). The teacher will begin the assessment by starting the app timer and then tap (+) or (-) as a student makes or corrects a mistake. When the student is finished the teacher will end the timer and then press the finish assessment button to get instant real-time results. These detailed results will include WPM, word counts, number of mistakes and more."
