Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool | iPad toolkit | Scoop.it
Book creator has probably been the app I have used most, in my teaching, with pupils and in my training. The blank canvas aspect means it can be used across the whole curriculum and the addition of the pen tool in the last few weeks has added to that. We use Showbie at school for pupils to share their work, including books made with Book Creator from the iPads and home to the teachers for assessment. Recently, we have used both the Pen Tool and Record feature to give feedback on the pupils' eBooks. The pupils send their books using Showbie and the teacher opens them up on his/her iPad. They can then annotate with their voice, pen and text. The book can then be sent back to the pupils using Showbie. The pupil can either change the original book and delete the annotated one or change the annotated book and delete the original. The screenshot shows a book of a Science experiment. The teacher can annotate with arrows but also add audio feedback. All elements of Book Creator can be deleted so the pupil can restore any annotated book to the original. This is obviously not a new idea but the pen tool has certainly made this quicker in a widely used app such as Book Creator.

Chosen teachers are assigned a coach who works side by side with them throughout the year. I am one of these lucky coaches. Coaching has enabled me to make some discoveries about what happens when iPads are used effectively in the classroom.

Listening to music activates large networks in the brain, but different kinds of music are processed differently. A team of researchers has developed a new method for studying music processing in the brain during a realistic listening situation.

Finally, a study that identifies a difference between how the brain processes vocal and instrumental music.    It's something that i have long believed is the case (and have built a business around it) but this is the first time I've seen some kind of scientific data.

Seems that in the presence of lyrics the brain shifts the processing of musical features towards the right auditory cortex - suggesting a left hemispheric dominance in the processing of the lyrics.

Now before we get all "Left brain this" and "right brain that" the study doesn't venture into the implications of the findings, but it's safe to say that with this first stone overturned - we should soon be getting a much deeper understanding of how all this works.

I love living today - we live in such exciting times!

Easy iPad Management for Education- At Scale!

Easy iPad Management for Education- At Scale! | iPad toolkit | Scoop.it

iPad deployment includes all of the steps between buying an iPad and beginning to use the device. For an individual’s personal iPad, this is often a very fast and easy process lasting no longer than five minutes: You just open the box, turn it on, download the apps you want on your device, and go. But for a school, or district, with potentially hundreds of iPads–each one requiring a specialized list of apps that need to be purchased before protecting the devices with a case and sending them out to classrooms. As an administrator or teacher, there are a few things you will need to know before you deploy your iPads

iPad in Education For Dummies is now shipping from Amazon for $13.65. I might be a little biased as some of my iLessons were included in the resource... BUT I think it is a very thorough and useful purchase.

A little more info...

1. It's a book for all levels: The book is a part of the very popular "for Dummies" series of books - hence the title. The book is however written for anyone interested in the use of iPads for educational purposes - whether beginner or advanced, teacher or parent, administrator or in-class educator.

2. It's primarily about education: The book really should have been titled, "Education using iPads" rather than "iPads in Education". Most Dummies books tend to be how-to manuals but this is primarily a book about education and focuses on the use and integration of iPads into 21st century learning initiatives. Yes, you will learn how to use iPads but it will be within the context of educational goals and objectives that prepare our students for life in the modern world.

Julie Bilz's curator insight, July 3, 2013 8:30 AM

Want to use an IPAD in your classroom, but not sure how? I love these series of books!
