Use of iPads in Charleston County schools show mixed, mostly positive results

Use of iPads in Charleston County schools show mixed, mostly positive results | ipad-schools | Scoop.it
The Charleston County School District has spent more than $9 million on its iPad initiative, but the computer tablets haven't triggered reading or math gains in three schools where every student has one.
Richard Jones's insight:

"Jordan said she uses her iPad to find information, rather than just getting it from the teacher.

During another lesson on the Roman coliseum, she said her teacher gave some information, then encouraged students to do their own research.

"We figured out way more than the teacher told us," Jordan said.

Allowing that kind of student-directed learning to take place is what teacher Dan Polasek said has been among his biggest challenges in using iPads. He loves telling students everything he knows about his social studies content, but he said that's not how students will learn the information.

Jonathan Jarc's curator insight, February 11, 4:58 AM

I believe the three schools that didn't show gains says more about the building cultures and teaching philosophy than it does about tech integration. If you don't change the way you teach with technological tools, then you will see no difference, waste valuable resources, and possibly damage relationships between teacher and student.

Indeed, the iPad is a tool for creativity. Students can build digital projects, by using images, podcasts, videos and music to increase the appeal of their work.

I have also found that the iPad is fantastic when used as a rotational activity for practising skills during literacy and maths lessons; especially for kids who are struggling. Thus its a great tool to use when differentiation of curriculum is important.

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning - Mind/Shift | ipad-schools | Scoop.it

"In this four-part series, we are using the Someday/Monday concept to explore four dimensions of using tablets, such as iPads, in educational settings. We will do this by examining how teachers can take students on a journey from the consumption of media to curation, creation, and connection. In the first part of this series, we used the Someday/Monday template to explore Consumption http://bit.ly/1bbz1tm . During the second, we examined Curation http://bit.ly/1bbz8Ff ; ; and the evolving role of the teacher as a curator of learning objects. This week, we will address Creation, examining what is possible when we empower students and teachers as innovators with iPads and other mobile devices."

Ness Crouch's curator insight, February 23, 3:23 PM

I've heard a lot about SMAR but never really taken the time to look into it. It might be time now that I'm looking at integrating more technology into my classroom. This model clearly supports technology and expects the use of it.

Richard Whiteside's curator insight, February 27, 3:42 PM

Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.

Mooresville Graded School District’s fourth annual Summer Connection conference, which focuses using digital technology in the classroom, brings in teachers, principals and superintendents from around the USA.
Richard Jones's insight:

For Tyna Thompson, who teaches ninth grade English in the private Cincinnati Christian Schools, the goal of digitally converting classrooms is the same one educators have always had for students: To see them make it into college and “great careers.”

The problem with one to one programmes (be they mac or pc or anything else) - the media don't get it unsurprisingly. If digital conversion means more efficient 20th century education we are in trouible.

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning

The iPad as a Tool for Creation to Strengthen Learning | ipad-schools | Scoop.it
We don’t want iPads to just become replacements for notebooks and textbooks, we want them to be objects to think with. We want students using them to mess around with the world around them and their courses of study.
Richard Jones's insight:

The iPad has often been dismissed as a tool for consumption and not creation.  I think this is a bit of a myth developed around thinking about learning as purely literary and overly concerned with file transfer issues and other "old school" activities.

Having said that it is a pity vendors have gone the proprietory route on storage!
