Siri trick turns iBooks into audiobooks

Siri trick turns iBooks into audiobooks | iPad: mobile Living, Learning, Lurking, Working, Writing, Reading ... | Scoop.it

"

Have you ever purchased an iBook and then wished that you had an audiobook version of it? Macworld UK's Mark Hattersley wrote a wonderful post today on how to use Siri Dictation to speak either a portion or all of the text from an iBook.

To begin setting up Siri to read your books aloud to you, go to Settings > General, then scroll down to Accessibility. Tap Speak Selection, slow down the speaking rate a bit to make Siri's reading somewhat more natural sounding, and then turn on Highlight Words so that you can see where Siri is reading in the iBook.

Now head over to the iBooks app and open the book you want to hear. Tap the aA icon at the top right of the iBook display, and tap on Themes. Of the three choices, select Scroll. Next, tap a word in the book to select it, then -- while holding your finger down on the drag handle -- scroll down through the text as far as you want."

Interesting to see the discrepency with shipment numbers from IDC as Chuck Jones points out in Forbes. Shipments and usage are two very different things on tablets.

Jim Lerman's curator insight, February 11, 2013 5:02 PM

I spent a lot of time checking this app out. It seems to be a really excellent way to create presentations on an iPad and deliver them using a variety of methods -- including screencasting directly from the iPad to any type of device (TV, computer, phone, or other iPads). The demos show uses in dealthcare, education, business, and PR/advertsing. The pricing model is a bit steep for schools, but maybe with enough pressure they will modify that. Looks like an app that offers a great deal of functionality. Do give it a try.

Comment please.

ETMOOC: Who Owns Your Education Data?

Who Owns Your Education Data?(and Why Does It Matter?) Audrey Watters @audreywatters #ETMOOC

...

I have given a number of talks lately on this topic: who owns education data? (And will give a couple more next week -- on a panel at SXSWedu and then, a related but expanded version as a keynote at WebWise.)

I'm not sure why the topic has resonated so deeply with me lately -- perhaps it's all the talk outside the ed-tech sector about the promises of big data; perhaps it's the metaphor of mining vis-a-vis data mining; perhaps it's this new obsession with becoming "data-driven" that I hear politicians posit for schools and students (and thus all the ed-tech products that follow suit); perhaps it's that I am both intrigued and concerned by the emerging field of learning analytics; perhaps it's because I continue to be frustrated by our lack of attention to terms of service and to control of our content (which is data); perhaps it's that I struggle with thinking through exactly how to navigate the personal and the public demands for sharing education data.

Anyway, last night I facilitated a session as part of ETMOOC, a MOOC about education technology and media, organized by Alec Couros.  Here's a link to the webinar recording and alink to my slides, along with the wonderful visual notes taken by the even-more-wonderful Giulia Forsythe.

Screencasting Apps for the iPad

Screencasting Apps for the iPad | iPad: mobile Living, Learning, Lurking, Working, Writing, Reading ... | Scoop.it

"As other teachers who have used iPads for years already know, there are some very cool educational apps out there, and recently I have been exploring various screencasting apps to record lessons for my classroom.  I have also had tons of fun playing with all of them over the winter break, screencasting from my couch about goofy things (mostly involving my two glorified throw-rugs of dogs) with my husband shaking his head at me from his armchair."

What is Vine? - Pocket-lint

What is Vine? - Pocket-lint | iPad: mobile Living, Learning, Lurking, Working, Writing, Reading ... | Scoop.it
If you’re looking for the latest craze to sweep the globe, then Vine is what you’re after. Vine is a six-second video app that’s owned

...

How does Vine work?

Currently, Vine is purely app-based and the only platform you can officially access it upon right now is iOS. There’s no Vine iPad app for the moment. You can of course use Vine with an iPad but the experience is optimised for iPhone and iPod touch at the time of writing. You can download Vine for iPhone and iPod touch here. It’s free. Once you’ve done that, there’s a quick tour that’s well worth it and includes a very brief tutorial on how to get going.

The essence of the fun is that you get six seconds of video recording to play with as you will. To start the camera rolling, you press and hold your finger on the screen of your device. When you lift your finger off, Vine stops recording video. If you put your finger back on again, the video recording continues and thus you can stop and start your action as many times as you like within the allotted six seconds per video, or you can just shoot it all in one go if you prefer.

Very often people go for the stop motion effect and, either way what Vine processes for you is your footage built as a rolling animated GIF-type take on video. In other words, your six seconds go round and round ad infinitum.

Does Vine record sound?

Yes, is the short answer, and pretty much the long answer too. The Vine app accesses the microphone on your device and will record whatever sounds are made whenever you have your finger touching the screen in record mode. So, do bear in mind what’s going on in the background when you’re shooting your short and think about any sound effects that you might like to add.

Welcome to the Next Generation of Flipboard | Inside Flipboard

Welcome to the Next Generation of Flipboard | Inside Flipboard | iPad: mobile Living, Learning, Lurking, Working, Writing, Reading ... | Scoop.it

What’s the only thing better than Flipboard? Flipboard 2.0! It’s a major new edition, with treats for everyone from the casual reader to the power user. There’s more content than ever to enjoy, including a new partnership with Etsy. When you search, we instantly create a magazine out of your results. It’s faster, more visual, and easier to navigate.

And, for the first time, you can collect and save articles, photos, audio and video by organizing them into beautiful magazines. These can be private, or if you want to connect with like-minded enthusiasts, you can make them public and share them on Flipboard and beyond. Now everyone can be a reader and an editor.

Just tap the + button next to articles, pick a name for your magazine, add a description and start flipping. You can create as many magazines as you want—My Picks, The SF Giants, Wedding Inspiration, Things to Read Later—and draw from virtually any source on Flipboard, including what’s being shared on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SoundCloud, LinkedIn and Tumblr.

We’ve also made the entire Web flippable with our new bookmarklet. Go toshare.flipboard.com and, under the Getting Started tab, simply drag and drop the bookmarklet onto your computer’s browser. From there, you can flip virtually anything you find by clicking the bookmarklet from any web page. Check out your magazine on Flipboard and you’ll see your latest “flipped” items in a print-style layout. You can also tap into any item and promote it to the cover.

If you’d like to be inspired, tap on “By Our Readers” in the Content Guide, which contains a selection of magazines from staff and friends of Flipboard who’ve been experimenting with 2.0 in our beta program. They include bloggers like Gardenista’s Michelle Slatalla, entrepreneurs like Kate Kendall, curators like Bureau of Trade’s Michael Phillips Moscowitz, small business owners like Elizabeth Leu, musicians like Linkin Park, and people with passions around graffiti, fashion, apps, horses, travel, food, kids and more. We’ll be highlighting many of them—and people like you!—in our blog in the coming weeks.

Some other highlights of 2.0:

    • A new, visual Content Guide. Tap the Red Ribbon and you’ll see your own table of contents, all the magazines you’ve created, Notifications and lots of other goodies for you to peruse.

    • Commenting on Flipboard. Inside a story, tap the source’s avatar in the lower left-hand corner, to reveal Flipboard Comments. Draw in other Flipboard users with @mentions.

    • Recommended Reading. In Cover Stories, you’ll find More to Read, a personalized list of things we think you’ll love, drawn from your social interactions.

    • Subsections in partner magazines, newspapers and websites. On the second page of tablet editions, you’ll find new sidebars listing subsections for easier navigation.

    • Fast section switching. Tap the section name at the top of any page to reveal related content and subsections.

    • Optional Facebook Open Graph integration, bringing your Flipboard activity to your Facebook page in more meaningful ways.

Finally, don’t forget to read our Community Guidelines for best practices around using the new Flipboard.

We can’t wait to see what you create!

Best,
~The Flipboard Team
