Online library delivers digital books to Hillsborough students

Online library delivers digital books to Hillsborough students | iPad & Literacy | Scoop.it

TAMPA --Makenzie Cole doesn't have to worry about heading to a library if she wants to check out some books for reading time.

All the Walden Lake Elementary second-grader has to do is sit at a computer and log on to a website where she has access to a cornucopia of reading materials.

"This is an incredible project," said Todd Brekhus of Capstone Digital, which has created the "Read on myON" online library, funded mainly by the Hillsborough County school district with contributions from community partners. "Imagine 2,600 books on her lap."

Empowering Students with Digital Reading | District Administration Magazine

Empowering Students with Digital Reading | District Administration Magazine | iPad & Literacy | Scoop.it
When Connie Dopierala was hired as the media services administrator for the Charleston County (S.C.) School District, one of her tasks was to update the district’s library books. “I was shocked by how dated some of the books were,” she says. “One school had a biography on Nelson Mandela that was written while he was still in prison.”

Some of the younger librarians suggested buying digital books, but Dopierala was skeptical. “I wanted to prove that kids still love having books in their hands,” she says. As a pilot program, the district purchased 206 digital books for the 2010-2011 school year and measured how often the books were read. Dopierala says the results blew her away. By the end of the school year, those 206 books had been accessed more than 101,000 times by K12 students all over the district. One Title I elementary school had accessed the books 58,000 times.

iPads in the Classroom are Changing the Face of Education | Mac|Life

iPads in the Classroom are Changing the Face of Education | Mac|Life | iPad & Literacy | Scoop.it

"In Maine--one of the first places to fully implement a one-to-one laptop curriculum--schools across the state are replacing static paper textbooks and bulky Dell laptops for the slimmer, faster, and more dynamic iPad. In the Auburn School District, administrators are using the iPad in controlled areas to prove its efficacy in raising literacy rates and teaching mathematical skills. This case study is part of a bigger program dubbed the Advantage 2014 initiative, which aims to raise literacy and numeracy skills from 63 percent and 60 percent, respectively (as measured in spring 2011), to 90 percent in the 2014–2015 school year."

Literacy, families and learning: 14 Great Educational Apps for Children

Literacy, families and learning: 14 Great Educational Apps for Children | iPad & Literacy | Scoop.it

Regular readers of this blog will know that I've reviewed apps for iPad and android devices a number of times. My posts have included reviews of picture book apps (here), story apps of varied kinds (here) and apps that stimulate literacy, learning and creativity (here). In this post I review a number of educational apps that support children's learning in varied ways. I have grouped them into 5 categories for convenience. Some could well fit into more than one of these categories. Because the apps are so varied I have used a simpler rating scale than I typically use. In this post I attribute a single score from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Outstanding) to indicate the extent to which they meet these simple criteria:
