Students Use Book Creator to Author Mathematics: Part 2 | MathyCathy's Blog – Mrs. Cathy Yenca

Students Use Book Creator to Author Mathematics: Part 2 | MathyCathy's Blog – Mrs. Cathy Yenca | iPads in the Classroom | Scoop.it

"For our last day of class with a “normal” schedule (today), I met with my students in our school’s 21st-century learning space.  There’s a sampling of flexible furniture, a corner with stadium seating, iMacs, a big-screen TV, an Apple TV, tables that also serve as white boards… chairs on wheels, couches with charging stations… it’s a great space!

Students’ first task today was to finalize their multi-touch math books and submit them to me.  Since some student groups were able to virtually turn in their books last Friday, I was able to embed their .ePub files on my teacher website, and use each unique URL to share all of the books in a ThingLink.  Student groups downloaded and read no less than five books authored by their peers."

Mike Dilger's insight:

We often see Book creator and writing books not an option in maths.  Maybe this teacher and what she does with her maths class will give you some ideas for publishing In Maths.

Free Technology for Teachers: Free Collaborative Video Creation with iPads

Free Technology for Teachers: Free Collaborative Video Creation with iPads | iPads in the Classroom | Scoop.it

Mike Dilger's insight:

One of the main problems with iPads and video is the sharing aspect with the teacher when all the work is done.  This solution is worth a look and offers a way forward.  The trick is to keep video to small segments rather than one large video when dealing with students submissions.  Theory suggests that 7 minutes is about what most students will cope with as far as concentration and retention are concerned.

This is a guest post from Greg Kulowiec of EdTechTeacher.org, an advertiser on Free Technology for Teachers.

Publishing student video that is created with iPads can be a challenging process, especially with younger students. Even schools that are Google Apps typically decide to turn off YouTube uploads to the student accounts. However, with the use of a handful of free applications, students can create video content on iPad, share their creation with a teacher, and then have the teacher upload to their YouTube channel or a class YouTube channel.

"There’s a serious demand for coders and IT professionals today. A good developer is worth his or her weight in gold. My students are interested in gaming and creating apps, but not enough Rhode Island students graduated with a computer science degree last year to fill increasing demands. The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics states that computer programmers with a bachelor’s degree can expect to earn over $71,000, and software developers with a bachelor’s over $90,000. By comparison, entry-level pay for teachers with a bachelors’ is half as much."

Literacy Supports in the Remote Outback

Literacy Supports in the Remote Outback | iPads in the Classroom | Scoop.it
My role during the week was to explore with the teachers how to provide literacy support for those students experiencing difficulties with reading and writing in English, using iPads recently purchased by the school.
Mike Dilger's insight:

I have advocated the use of Book Creator app to many staff and this approach by Greg should be read with interest.   Also mentioned is an app called Readability Score ($3) that allows you to assess the readability and appropriateness of reading material you wish to use with your students.  This approach to supporting literacy in you class can easily be adapted.  The ReadWrite app mentioned is similar to the app we are trialling next term with a couple of classes that uses text prediction and reads back the students writing for them to edit.  Stay tuned to how effective it is with student editing.
