Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library | Involved Librarian | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing transformations that has taken place at NMHS is the creation of the Makerspace in what was our traditional library.  A space that could once be compared to a barren wasteland is now a thriving learning metropolis where students flock to tinker, invent, create, collaborate, work, and most importantly, learn.  When I hired Laura I basically told her what her budget was and that she had complete control of how she wanted to use the money.  I could never have imagined how quickly she could radically transform this outdated space, using money that in the past had always been spent on books, magazines, and electronic databases.

A good explanation of the changing nature of the library as a place of interactive learning.

Peg Becksvoort's curator insight, July 11, 2013 10:57 AM

Just what I was trying to tell someone the other day. She said, "my students don't like to read novels, but I suppose I should take the kids to the library." To which I replied, "But they like to use the Internet to find things; wouldn't you like for them to do a better job of finding things?"

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills

Connecting the Classroom and the Library: How One School Uses Web-Based Library Projects to Build Information-Literacy Skills | Involved Librarian | Scoop.it

The first step we took in 1999 was to stop teaching isolated library skills classes. We began reinforcing information-literacy skills through class projects. At that time, we employed traditional strategies, including paper pathfinders and guided lab sessions.

Teachers Build 'The Great Wall Of Awesome' To Inspire Learning - Edudemic | Involved Librarian | Scoop.it
The Great Wall of Awesome is an online space that aims to enhance what you are doing as an educator and facilitate the rich learning of your students.
Peg Becksvoort's insight:

This was really cool until I reached the page where the adverts started, subtly, down the side of the page. Well whoops! I am sure that at a school we would not see the ads I saw. But, caveat emptor, they want you to upgrade and buy their product. So, kind of a nifty idea ruined by adverts (Ok, I know they need to have revenue, but screen the ads if this is a site for kids and teachers to use.) Create your own Great Wall of Awesome and find schools to work with but without a commercial venture.
