We only have a 5 percent chance of avoiding ‘dangerous’ global warming, a study finds | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Climate pessimism has had quite a run lately. Maybe we need to redefine what optimism means.

In recent years, it has become increasingly common to frame the climate change problem as a kind of countdown — each year we emit more carbon dioxide, narrowing the window for fixing the problem, but not quite closing it yet. After all, something could still change. Emissions could still start to plunge precipitously. Maybe next year. Read more: click image or title.

Norway Says All Cars in the Country Will Be 100% Electric

Norway Says All Cars in the Country Will Be 100% Electric | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Norway has been incentivizing the use of zero emission vehicles since the 1990s. Towards the end of 2016, the country already had 100,000 zero-emission cars on the road.

By 2025, all of the cars on Norway’s roads could be electric. That’s just eight years away—and if the target seems a little ambitious, it should be noted that the country is already well on its way toward this goal. Electric vehicle (EV) sales already comprise 37 percent of Norway’s car market.

Norway has been incentivizing the use of zero emission vehicles since the 1990s. These include exempting EVs from value added taxes (VAT), thus making conventional automobiles significantly more expensive in the country, low annual road tax, and no purchase and import taxes. EVs also park for free in city centers, get access to bus lanes, and don’t have to pay road tolls. Read more: click image or title.

For a Republican Mayor in Texas, Clean Energy Is a ‘No Brainer’  | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Mayor Dale Ross of Georgetown, Texas, has become a media darling, as a conservative Republican who backs solar and wind power.

“We got something in common,” Dale Ross told Al Gore last summer. “You invented the internet. And I invented green energy.”

Ross, the mayor of Georgetown, Texas — pop. 65,000 — was having a bit of fun with the former vice president and longtime environmental activist. But, in the coming months, his rapid ascendancy in the renewable-energy cosmos might make the boast seem less of a joke. Read more: click image or title.

Why Trump is pulling out of the Paris climate deal

Why Trump is pulling out of the Paris climate deal | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

The major players, and the warring views.

The mistake many people made in handicapping whether President Trump was going to pull the U.S. out of the Parisclimate deal was to think he would change his mind from his campaign promise.

"He's been remarkably consistent on these issues," said Tom Pyle, president of the conservative advocacy group American Energy Alliance, and a close confidant of the Trump administration. "It makes me very happy. I'm not a trade guy, I'm not a healthcare guy."

The people urging him to withdraw were louder, more influential and more relevant to Trump than the people urging him to stay in, even though there were more of the latter than the former. Read more: click image or title.

Musk, Polman and Branson among business leaders urging Trump to stay in the Paris Agreement

The mailbox at the Whitehouse is in danger of overflowing, as another letter - this time from 30 chief executives of some of the largest US firms - called on President Donald Trump to "champion" economic growth by staying in the Paris Agreement.

Chief executives from companies including Unilever, Virgin, Coca-Cola, Walt Disney and Tesla all signed the letter, which was sent to Trump on Wednesday (10 May).

The 30 business leaders call on Trump to “maintain the US’s status as the world’s biggest champion of economic growth and innovation” by remaining in the Paris Agreement. The President, who threatened to pull-out of the global climate deal as part of his campaign, revealed that a decision would be delayed until after the G7 summit later this month.

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising at the fastest rate ever recorded

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising at the fastest rate ever recorded | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

For two straight years — 2015 and 2016 — atmospheric carbon dioxide has climbed by more than 3 parts per million.

According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, carbon dioxide levels jumped by three parts per million in both 2015 and 2016 and now rest at about 405 parts per million.

It’s the biggest jump ever observed at the agency’s Mauna Loa Baseline Atmospheric Observatory in Hawaii, where the measurements were recorded. Similar observations have been recorded at stations all over the world, said Pieter Tans, who leads the Carbon Cycle Greenhouse Gases group at NOAA’s Greenhouse Gas Reference Network.

Throughout the last decade, the average rate of increase has been around 2.3 parts per million per year, Tans added. Read more: click image or title.

"All signs have suggested that we’re now living in a permanently post-400 parts per million world. In September 2016, the time of year when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are usually at their lowest, scientists observed that the monthly average concentration still remained above this threshold. And now, the new NOAA measurements further indicate that carbon dioxide levels are only continuing to grow — and they’re rising at breakneck speed."

Future Energy and Finance - Mines and Money Asia

PRESS RELEASE

Renewable energy interdependent on mining

Energy and mining are interdependent and miners are recognising more and more the significant benefits that renewable energy can provide their mine sites and the wider local communities.

A number of commodities, coal, uranium, lithium, graphite, cobalt and to a lesser extent gold and copper and other strategic metals used in the production of solar panels and wind turbines are all relevant to the sector bringing a synergy to the mining and renewable energy sectors.

Recognising that many of the inputs for clean energy come from the mining industry, it is only natural that traditional mining investors interested in sustainability are also looking at the real asset investment potential offered by renewable and clean energy companies.

The inaugural Future Energy and Finance conference set to take place in Hong Kong, this April 5-7, is co-located alongside the 10th annual Mines and Money Asia. The event will look at the Asian energy market and review its position from a macroeconomic standpoint, the investment opportunities and financing options available within the sector as well as the commodities dependent on the energy market.

Future Energy and Finance provides investors with an overview of the energy sector and insights into its future direction, thus identifying the investment opportunities within the region. Renewable energy is, without doubt a growing phenomenon worldwide and with the support of government policy and subsidies will continue to grow. The fossil fuel divestment movement is also growing apace and those traditional oil and gas investors have an opportunity at Future Energy and Finance to assess the very real alternative that solar, wind, biomass and hydro offer the real asset investment community.

How To Write An Elevator Pitch

How To Write An Elevator Pitch | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Developing an elevator pitch is a popular way to design and practice a process that will allow us to be prepared to sell our product in nearly any scenario.

In the world of startups, every moment in the face of a potential investor can be critical. The first meeting with them, whether by plan or by accident, may only offer a few of those moments. When deciding how to pitch an idea to a business that could make or break a product launch, it's important to understand how to optimize each second of that pitch.

Developing an elevator pitch is a popular way to design and practice a process that will allow us to be prepared to sell our product in nearly any scenario. To understand the concept of an elevator pitch, it helps to imagine it in context: We've just entered an elevator, and we realize the person in the elevator with us is someone that could be key to lifting our project off the ground. We know we have one chance to make an impression and a brief time to impress. It's an opportunity that may never present itself again; how well we've prepared for that moment will determine the likelihood of our success. Read more: click image or title.

Solar Power Will Kill Coal Faster Than You Think

Solar Power Will Kill Coal Faster Than You Think | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s outlook shows renewables will be cheaper almost everywhere in just a few years.

Solar power, once so costly it only made economic sense in spaceships, is becoming cheap enough that it will push coal and even natural-gas plants out of business faster than previously forecast.
That’s the conclusion of a Bloomberg New Energy Finance outlook for how fuel and electricity markets will evolve by 2040. The research group estimated solar already rivals the cost of new coal power plants in Germany and the U.S. and by 2021 will do so in quick-growing markets such as China and India. Tesla's Elon Musk pledges to fix SA's power crisis in 100 days 'or it's free' | Investing in Renewable Energy | Scoop.it
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has responded to Atlassian's Mike Cannon-Brookes' challenge, and doubled down on his company's pledge to help solve SA's energy crisis.

Software billionaire Michael Cannon-Brookes has been flooded with offers to help raise $200 million to take up Tesla chief executive Elon Musk's offer to solve South Australia's energy woes with batteries in 100 days "or it's free".

"The reaction has been overwhelming. My phone hasn't stopped buzzing. The support is flooding in, both from individuals in terms of "hell yes!" and from corporates who are asking: "Can we buy power? Can we contribute dollars?" Mr Cannon-Brookes, the co-founder of Atlassian, said.

"I need seven days to try and sort out politics and funding – I'm excited to get this off the ground."

Late on Friday local time Mr Musk offered Mr Cannon-Brookes a system for $US250 per kilowatt hour of capacity – about half the pre-discount price quoted by Tesla executives in Melbourne on Thursday.
