Google Drive in Class: 38 Ideas by Sean Junkins

Google Drive in Class: 38 Ideas by Sean Junkins | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

August 11, 2014
This is the third post in a series of posts aimed at helping teachers and educators make the best out of Google Drive in classrooms. This series comes in a time when teachers are getting ready to start a new school year and hopefully will provide them with the necessary know-how to help them better integrate Google Drive in their teaching pedagogy. The two previous posts featured in this series were entitled consecutively "New Google Drive Cheat Sheet" and "Teachers Visual Guide to Google Drive Sharing". Today's post covers some interesting ideas and tips on how to go about using Google Drive in your classroom. This work is created by Sean Junkins from SeansDesk.

One goal at ISTE13 was to learn more about the hidden world of Google -- the scripts, extensions, and apps. I honestly wasn't aware of them until I read Linda Yollis' post after she went to the Google Teacher Academy... which led me to a post by Amy Mayer atfriEDTechnology, with her video explanation/tutorial:

After watching the above video, I decided I needed to learn more about what Google offers. At ISTE13, I attended several sessions which added to this quest, including Cool Google Tools for the BYOD Classroom by Tammy Worcester, and Real World Math Lessons with Google Earth by Thomas Petra.

Email to your Dropbox without new email address (if you use Google)

Email to your Dropbox without new email address (if you use Google) | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Via Felix Jacomino

Felix Jacomino's curator insight, June 10, 2013 11:38 AM

I was looking for an easy way to have students and teachers put files in my dropbox account. Of course, there's http://DropItTo.me which allows senders to upload files through a web interface but on an iPad, that's limited to images and videos in your camera roll.

If only there was a way to email files to my dropbox directly. Well, there's https://sendtodropbox.com and that's exactly what it's for. The problem... the less than desirable email address you're given, like felix_9048rq@sendtodropbox.com. So I got to thinking.

Did you know that if you have a google mail address (gmail or your own domain), there's a neat trick that allows you to have more email address aliases without setting anything up? All you need to do is add a + and anything after it. For example: anything sent to felix+hello@jacomino.com will arrive at felix@jacomino.com.

What I did next is, in my gmail settings, I added a forwarding email address and used the sendtodropbox address felix_9048rq@sendtodropbox.com. But wait, I need to verify that I own that account! Will that be a problem? Not without one little setting change. In SendToDropbox.com options, be sure to check BOTH "Include HTML email body (if available)" AND "Include plain text email body (if available)."

After doing so, send the verification email from your gmail > settings > forwarding and check your dropbox for the email body which will contain the verification code.

Once verified, create a gmail filter. Mine was simple. Any email sent to felix+db@jacomino.com, forward to felix_9048rq@sendtodropbox.com. I also selected to skip the inbox and add a label, but that was my personal preference. Feel free to customize as you see fit.

I tested by sending a small file from another email address to felix+db@jacomino.com and voilà, it worked! The file is uploaded to Dropbox > Apps >Attachments folder.

I hope this helps and happy dropping!

This is How To Use Google Hangout in Your Classroom ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"If you are planning to use Google Hangout with your students then here is a very good video clip to help you learn more about the benefits of using this platform in your teaching. Though relatively new, Google Hangouts has been increasingly gaining in popularity particularly among educators and social media users.

"Google Hangout  has several distinctive features that sets it apart from the crowd. First, it is integrated with other Google services like Youtube, Gmail, and Calendar and if you have a Google account then you automatically have a Google Plus account. Google Hangouts can also be recorded or streamlined live on YouTube using a generated link. The image and audio quality of hangouts are, I believe, better than the ones in Skype. Google Hangouts also supports a wide variety of third party apps that can be used to perform different tasks like adding emoticons, doodles, chat and many more."

BOOC: Big Open Online Courses at Indiana University created by Daniel Hickey. Educational Assessment Practice Principles and Policies

BOOC: Big Open Online Courses at Indiana University created by Daniel Hickey. Educational Assessment Practice Principles and Policies | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

FREE :: STARTS SEPT. 9 :: LIMITED TO 500 PARTICIPANTS

"Google has funded an associate professor in the Indiana University School of Education to develop a "Big Open Online Course," or BOOC. Daniel Hickey will offer a free course in September focused on educators and titled "Assessment Practices, Principles and Policies" for as many as 500 students, funded by a $50,000 Google grant.

"Hickey intends for this BOOC to offer most of the advantages of a Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC, but with more interaction, while taking advantage of Google's new Coursebuilder course management system. "Google wants to know whether interactive online practices that are working well with 20 students can be scaled up," Hickey said.

"Students who complete the BOOC will learn the practical skills needed to improve classroom student assessments while exploring assessment principles and new accountability policies. These topics are becoming more important to educators as states introduce new curriculum standards and achievement tests, while at the same time beginning to evaluate teachers according to short-term gains on those tests. Students who wish to take the course for graduate-level credit will be able to do so by completing additional course requirements, including a term paper based on the weekly assignments".

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today

Why Historical Maps Still Matter So Much, Even Today | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

With 150,000 or so old print maps to his name, David Rumsey has earned his reputed place among the world's "finest private collectors." He continues to expand his personal trove as well as the digitized sub-collection he makes open to the public online — some 38,000 strong, and growing.

He's created a series of interactive maps that layer old prints onto the Google Earth and Google Maps platforms, and this summer he plans to launch a geo-referencing tool (similar to one recently introduced by the British Library) that lets users get involved in the digital mapping process themselves.

While preparing for this next expansion of his online map empire, Rumsey remains fascinated by "the power of putting these images up and letting them go," he says.

"Maps have a way of speaking to people very straightforward," he says. "You don't have to have a lot of knowledge of map history or history in general. To me they're perfect tools for teaching history to the public."
