Take control of any screen that has a browser with your smartphone | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

This is awesome. Any screen that has a browser (internet enabled...phone, computer, tv, etc.) can be synced to your iPhone or Android phone and, poof! The phone becomes a remote control to select, play, and operate any video on the slave device.

Control Kahn Academy videos from across the room. As great as this is, just think of where it's going to go in a few months!

Oh, and it's free. -JL

Mark Pullen offers useful suggestions on how to employ 1:1 tech in teaching Language Arts:

*For Reading: ebooks enable students to easily find definitions, search for a word or phrase, locate character descriptions, and access included links (in newer ebooks. Reading can become more collaborative as well, using sites such as Scribulus or OpenMargin.

*For Writing: using Google Docs for collaboration or peer editing and writing for a global audience. -JL

What I Wish I Had Known about Student Motivation

What I Wish I Had Known about Student Motivation | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

By Brian Goodwin

"Years later, while digging into research on student motivation, I realized what I had gotten wrong. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck has shown that telling students they are smart actually lowers their motivation and achievement. In an experiment, Dweck and her colleagues treated two groups of students quite differently. They consistently praised one group for its ability, saying things like, “Wow. You got eight right; you must be really smart.” They praised the second group for effort: “Wow. You got eight right; you must have worked really hard.”

"The students hearing continual praise for their ability developed a “fixed-mindset” and came to believe that achievement or “smarts” was innate, not developed through effort. Consequently, they began to avoid challenging tasks, fearing that if they tried and failed, they no longer would appear smart. On the other hand, 90 percent of the students hearing praise for their effort took on more challenging tasks and found they actually enjoyed the work."

Global Initiative Seeks to Transform Schools By Teaching Empathy - Education - GOOD

Global Initiative Seeks to Transform Schools By Teaching Empathy - Education - GOOD | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Strong academic skills aren't enough to guarantee success for 21st-century students. Now, one group is looking to broaden what our children are taught. Ashoka Changemakers, a nonprofit that provides tools and resources to help people improve their communities, is looking for entries for "Activating Empathy," a competition seeking to spotlight and support smart ideas, programs, and learning models that build students' abilities to collaborate and communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and respect multiple perspectives.

"Ideas submitted to the contest can be in any stage of development—from a proposal in need of seed money to an established program looking to expand—and can target a wide range of topics: "encouraging social and emotional development; unlocking new ways of viewing problems; championing children as real-world problem solvers rather than simply bystanders," or something else. Entries will be accepted through March 30."

Edu-pinning: Pinterest in Education

Edu-pinning: Pinterest in Education | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

By Erin Paynter

"In the past few weeks, the uses of Pinterest in the field of education have come zooming to the forefront of the online edu-chatter (see this post by Eric Sheninger). After checking it out and watching for a while, I began pinning and following other pinners and/or their boards. I have seen teachers use it to display ideas regarding classroom organization and management, lesson plan ideas and assessment tools. Lately I’ve begun following fellow administrators as they share everything from inspirational leadership quotes, to videos, to web 2.0 tools for educators, social media and infographics.

"What I like most about Pinterest is that you can follow individual boards rather than everything a pinner posts. This is great because many pinners are combining professional resources with personal ones. In other words, I can follow a colleague’s board on leadership in education, but not the one they’ve created for remodeling their kitchen or their upcoming wedding.

"These are six pinners from the field of education and leadership that I think have boards worth following"

"As we gather more data using Google Forms and Spreadsheets there are a lot of questions out there about how we can reformat and share this data in a more consumable understandable way. In the last couple of months the Maine 207 technology team of Mark Ordonez and Janice Cacciatore and Hank Thiele have tackled this issue on several projects and as a result have created a reproducible Google Script that takes the information off a spreadsheet and ultimately creates a unique document that can be shared with anyone."

How to Remotely Wipe a Mac

How to Remotely Wipe a Mac | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"In an extreme situation, say a Mac is lost or stolen, you can remotely wipe the Mac of all its data and contents with the help of iCloud. Remotely wiping a Mac goes a step further though and not only removes all data from the computer, but locks it down so that it’s unusable without a set passcode, plus displays a message you provide. This is excellent anti-theft protection, and even if you never end up using it, it’s good to know how to do."

The Academies at New Milford High School

Eric Sheninger has emerged as a significant educational leader in recent years. As principal of New Milford HS in New Jersey, he has championed social media and 21st century skills as the keystones of the school's continuing transformation.

In Fall 2011, NMHS launched 3 academies as a kind of schools within a school -- not a new concept by any means. But read this brochure and see the nuanced ways so many elements have been built into this academy concept: badges, elevation of the status of teaching, seamless technology integration, personalization, performance assessment, and more.

A wonderful example of problem identification followed by creative problem solving. Without a clear analysis of what issues needed to be addressed, a prescription for change this powerful could never have been put together.

Great work. -JL

The District Goes Digital: Leveraging Online Learning for Broader Student Achievement

The District Goes Digital: Leveraging Online Learning for Broader Student Achievement | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Free webinar Wednesday, March 20, 2012, 2-3 pm EDT. Webinar will be archived for 6 months after event.

"In this special webinar, brought to you by K12 Inc., Kim McClelland, Assistant Superintendent of Falcon School District 49 in Colorado Springs, will discuss how her district leveraged lessons learned from the implementation of a full-time, online virtual school to address a much broader spectrum of student needs. Opening the district’s Falcon Virtual Academy in 2010 helped tackle the challenges of a crowded district and improve student performance.

"Based on the success of that experience, McClelland and her team took online learning to the next level. Now, as Innovation Leader for the district’s iConnect Innovation Zone, McClelland and her team have developed nine additional part-time and blended learning schools and programs, meeting more individualized learning needs of more students. Next up for the district is the addition of online credit recovery, RTI interventions, gifted-and-talented enhancement, and foreign-language programs."
