How Can Teachers Prepare Kids for a Connected World?

How Can Teachers Prepare Kids for a Connected World? | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Educators are always striving to find ways to make curriculum relevant in students’ everyday lives. More and more teachers are using social media around lessons, allowing students to use their cell phones to do research and participate in class, and developing their curriculum around projects to ground learning around an activity. These strategies are all part of a larger goal to help students connect to social and cultural spaces."

A look at Henry Jenkins work on participatory learning and PLAY (Participatory Learning and You). So what is PLAY? "...'a mode of experimentation, of testing materials, trying out new solutions, exploring new horizons,' Jenkins said. It’s how kids interact with games – throwing themselves in without reading the rules, testing the limits and feeling free to try and fail."

This post provides a number of examples, discusses assesement and play, and provides links to additional articles on the subject.

Description by EdSurge

"SYMPHONICAL helps you get 'er done with digital post-it note templates that help you organize, brainstorm, and analyze tasks, ideas, and discussions. The pre-made templates make it clear that Symphonical is targeting the business-minded but there are plenty of applications for the classroom and beyond. Planning a new unit with the teaching team? Try out the handy SWOT analysis template. Dare to let students create their own learning path? Create a fluid weekly lesson plan and make students collaborators. Better yet, give their parents read-only privileges! There's even a blank canvas that allows you to build templates for any rubri... uh row/column format that you can conceive. The icing on the cake however is the seamless integration with Google Hangouts-- every great collaboration should be full of smiling (or smirking) faces."

I see this as a simple collaboration and time management tool.  I've created an account and entered a week's worth of notes.  I find it useful to see what's ahead.  I doubt this will surplant my Google Calendar useage.  I really need automatic reminders.

Robin Good's curator insight, January 19, 2013 7:45 AM

ClipArt ETC is a wonderful collection of quality educational clipart providing simple illustrations, icons and drawings in a multitude of areas, from history, to business, art, literature, music and sports.

A project of the Florida Center for Instructional Technology of University of South Florida), ClipArt ETC has curated over 65,000 images and organized, categorized each one of them, while providing descriptions and multiple file formats in which to download them.

I must say they really did a wonderful job. The images are great, the quality is excellent, the organization of the catalog is well done and easy to navigate.

From the official site: "Every item comes with a choice of image size and format as well as complete source information for proper citations in school projects.

No advertisement-filled pages with pop-up windows or inappropriate links here.

A friendly license allows teachers and students to use up to 50 educational clipart items in a single, non-commercial project without further permission."

The ClipArt ETC resource was designed and intended for educational projects but due to the many commercial requests it has received it now offers a "commercial" shopping cart to purchase any of its images for commercial applications. More info here: http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/info/license

This new website from Jackie Gerstein explores technology use in social and emotional learning. Quoting from the site "This website has been designed to describe technology activities that facilitate social emotional learing. The links in the menu lead to descriptions of the individual activities. They can be sued within formal and inforrmal educational setting. Even though the focus of the activities are on building and enhacing social emtional learning, many can be connected with content standards related to language arts, oral communication, media literacy, and ISTE's National Education Standards for Students."

The website is very easy to use. There is a menu that provides a list of 14 activities, including Conflict Management Strategies Posters, Book Trailers, and Teach Tech to Grandparents. Most have samples of projects. Not all are relevant to all ages but she does state that she has used some with both elementary and college students.

14 Excellent PDF Annotating Apps for iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

14 Excellent PDF Annotating Apps for iPad ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

By Med Kharbach

"One of the things I love the most about iPad is its portability. You can take it to bed, crawl in and read your PDFs ( hopefully not school readings or assignments because that is no fun ! ). I said PDFs because these are probably the best document format , I personally prefer them to other docs and I know many of you do. However  PDFs do have a serious shortcoming : readers are not always able to interact with them in the sense of being able to highlight chunks of text , or annotate them. Luckily there are now some great apps to help you enhance your reading PDF reading experience. I am sharing them with you below and if you have other suggestions or additions , please share them with us below. The apps below are for iPad and for those of you who are looking for PDF annotating tools that work on the web version, check out this LIST."
