Planning a Lesson, Telling a Story | edutopia | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

By Karen Lea

Summary by Accomplished Teacher

"Like a good story, classroom lessons should gain students' attention from the start, writes math teacher Karen Lea. In this blog post, she offers several suggestions -- using the Common Core State Standards as a guide -- to hook students. Lea suggests teaching sixth-grade students about reasoning and evidence by reading a fake news story about dogs that makes specific claims. Then, she writes, students can discuss the article and debate its merits."

"The more schools experiment with online learning, the closer we will get to taking online learning to scale and moving toward higher student completion and success rates in online programs. With the vast array of synchronous and asynchronous technologies available, students are able to collaborate online just as well as in face-to-face classes, when the right environment and tools are in place."

TiffanyScreens is a cross-platform app that allows you to share live the contents of your computer screen with every computer present on the same local network (either via WiFi or LAN).

"Imagine a scenario, where every participant brought a Laptop to a meeting and watched the presentation on that Laptop's display - participants would probably sit on a table facing each other, instead of the wall.

No adjustments are necessary; images are scaled automatically on arrival, to best match the receiver's display-capability. To support lively meetings, everyone participating can with a single button click, turn his computer into the presenting device."

Mr. Horn will discuss how disruptive innovations—broadly speaking known as online learning--are emerging with the promise to make postsecondary education more affordable, accessible, and of higher quality to students across the world. The Art of Observation and How to Master the Crucial Difference Between Observation and Intuition | Brain Pickings

The Art of Observation and How to Master the Crucial Difference Between Observation and Intuition | Brain Pickings | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

By Maria Popova

:"“In the field of observation,” legendary disease prevention pioneer Louis Pasteur famously proclaimed in 1854, “chance favors only the prepared mind.” “Knowledge comes form noticing resemblances and recurrences in the events that happen around us,” neuroscience godfather Wilfred Trotter asserted. That keen observation is what transmutes information into knowledge is indisputable — look no further than Sherlock Holmes and his exquisite mindfulnessfor a proof — but how, exactly, does one cultivate that critical faculty?

"From The Art of Scientific Investigation (public library; public domain) by Cambridge University animal pathology professor W. I. B. Beveridge — the same fantastic 1957 compendium that explored the role of the intuition and imagination in science and how serendipity and “chance opportunism” fuel discovery — comes a timeless meditation on the art of observation, which he insists “is not passively watching but is an active mental process,” and the importance of distinguishing it from what we call intuition."
