Getting Started With Arduino: A Beginner’s Guide ~ makeuseof | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

"Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

"Arduino can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using the Arduino programming language and the Arduino Development Environment. Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can communicate with software running on a computer."

"Buncee lets you create amazing things to share with everyone."

"Our buncee.com web-based platform provides users with multiple easy-to use tools to add personal photos, text, drawings, and online content such as YouTube videos, Soundcloud audio, flickr, Google, or public Instagram images into a digital canvas called a ‘buncee’ that can be shared among all your social and private networks with just a few clicks."

Jim Lerman's insight:

Just heard about Buncee via a tweet from Shelly Terrell, who is most enthusiastic about it.

This is a very functional content creation tool that is quite powerful and yet quite simple to use. I see it as kind of a combination of Glogster and PowerPoint. Once one has made a Buncee preso, it can be easily shared via social media or archived for online access.

The people behind Buncee understand its capabilities well and highlight uses of the platform for business, education, and the home.

What Teachers Need to Know about AirDrop ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

What Teachers Need to Know about AirDrop ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Med Kharbach

"The new iOS 7 has brought about several new features to the overall functionality and feel of iPad. I have been tinkering with some of its features for awhile and have also watched some video tutorials on it and I must say that it is promising.

"One of the new features that comes in with iOS7 is AirDrop. This functionality allows users to share files, videos, images, PDFs..etc with other iPad users in their vicinity. Yes Google Drive, Dropbox and several other file storing and sharing systems are already providing it but what sets AirDrop apart from them is that it works with or without WiFi connection.
"This is a great thing for us in education and the good news is that there are a wide range of educational apps that support AirDrop sharing including: Pages, NotabilityExplain EverythingBook CreatorCreative Book Builder, TellagamiiMovieKeynote and many more. Now students can, for instance, create screencasts and share it with their peers in the class instantly without requiring any internet connection."

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Med Kharbach

"What attracts my attention more than anything else in this program are the two lists of core apps curated for both teachers and students. As soon as I saw the titles included in these lists I knew from my own experience in reviewing educational apps that these could be a very good start for anyone of you out there trying to incorporate iPad in your  teaching. Unfortunately the the app names are not hyperlinked which means that you need to google them in order to access them in iTunes store.

Say What? 5 Ways to Get Students to Listen | Edutopia.org

Say What? 5 Ways to Get Students to Listen | Edutopia.org | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Ah, listening, the neglected literacy skill. I know when I was a high school English teacher this was not necessarily a primary focus; I was too busy honing the more measurable literacy skills -- reading, writing, and speaking. But when we think about career and college readiness, listening skills are just as important. This is evidenced by the listening standards found in the Common Core and also the integral role listening plays in collaboration and communication, two of the four Cs of 21st century learning.

So how do we help kids become better listeners? Check out these tactics for encouraging a deeper level of listening that also include student accountability:

How a Radical New Teaching Method Could Unleash a Generation of Geniuses | Wired Business | Wired.com

How a Radical New Teaching Method Could Unleash a Generation of Geniuses | Wired Business | Wired.com | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by

"José Urbina López Primary School sits next to a dump just across the US border in Mexico. The school serves residents of Matamoros, a dusty, sunbaked city of 489,000 that is a flash point in the war on drugs. There are regular shoot-outs, and it’s not uncommon for locals to find bodies scattered in the street in the morning. To get to the school, students walk along a white dirt road that parallels a fetid canal. On a recent morning there was a 1940s-era tractor, a decaying boat in a ditch, and a herd of goats nibbling gray strands of grass. A cinder-block barrier separates the school from a wasteland—the far end of which is a mound of trash that grew so big, it was finally closed down. On most days, a rotten smell drifts through the cement-walled classrooms. Some people here call the school un lugar de castigo—”a place of punishment.”

"For 12-year-old Paloma Noyola Bueno, it was a bright spot. More than 25 years ago, her family moved to the border from central Mexico in search of a better life. Instead, they got stuck living beside the dump. Her father spent all day scavenging for scrap, digging for pieces of aluminum, glass, and plastic in the muck. Recently, he had developed nosebleeds, but he didn’t want Paloma to worry. She was his little angel—the youngest of eight children....

"Juárez Correa didn’t know it yet, but he had happened on an emerging educational philosophy, one that applies the logic of the digital age to the classroom. That logic is inexorable: Access to a world of infinite information has changed how we communicate, process information, and think. Decentralized systems have proven to be more productive and agile than rigid, top-down ones. Innovation, creativity, and independent thinking are increasingly crucial to the global economy."

Jim Lerman's insight:

A beautifully written piece; from the business section of Wired. Clarity sometimes emerges from the most unexpected quarters.

"iOS7 is the biggest update to iOS since the operating system was released in 2007.  While Administrators will be most interested in the new MDM options, the change in visual style will be the difference that is most immediately obvious to teachers and students.

"Likewise, a number of iOS features — most notably Spotlight, AirPlay, and multi-tasking — a have been moved, changed, or are accessed by using a different gesture which will result in additional training for your users."
