A Simple Process To Learn How To Curate Any Content You Read: The Cornell Notes

Robin Good's insight:

I recently stumbled onto this short video tutorial (1':57") which was created to explain to students how to take effective notes during a lesson or lecture.

Right upon my first play through it, I immediately felt that the steps suggested in it, could be also very useful for anyone just starting out with content curation and wanting to follow some kind of formal sequence to achieve good results.

The Cornell Notes video tutorial illustrates in fact in less than two minutes how to:

1) collect notes,

2) extract key concepts from them and

3) synthesize the essence of it in a presentable and readable format.

If you are just starting out with content curation, this can be quite useful.

Useful. Simple. 8/10

YouTube Capture- A Practical iPad App for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Med Kharbach

"YouTube Capture is definitely a must have iPad app for teachers and students. This app is developed by Google and, unlike the basic YouTube app, YouTube Capture allows users to record videos and upload them instantly and right from their iPad or phones and Instagram.

"Some of the fantastic features that distinguish YouTube Capture from the rest of crowd is the fact that it allows users to make use of YouTube’s stabilization, trimming, and automatic colour correction features – something that other video upload apps don’t. Another perk is the time limit which isn’t just a few seconds. In fact, you can record as long as your typical YouTube video would last, so all you really need to worry about is your Internet speed. Furthermore, you can upload and simultaneously share your videos with nearly all social media services as you go."

Becky Mowat's comment, September 23, 2013 8:27 AM
Yes it is so true- be concise, pique curiosity, and use authentic video. Real world settings are so important when teaching L2 learners. A picture still is worth a 1000 words, so just think how much time we save "getting the message across" using brief videos to introduce or define or explain lesson topics.
Becky Mowat's curator insight, September 23, 2013 8:34 AM

I have been using videos creating L2 lessons for a long time to introduce, define and explain topics, also to pique curiosity to learn more... This article  clearly states what attributes a good learning/teaching video should have: brevity, piques curiosity, interesting graphics, real world setting. As educators we can understand why these qualities add value to video content in lessons. For L2 learners I especially like the way LingleOnline uses close-captioned video in many languages to meet the needs of its learners.

The Appification of Ecommerce
About a year ago I purchased a new MacBook Air. Seeing how my new laptop related to the world much like an iPad with apps and an app store was a revelation. Apps will rule the world.

This trend is why we are all app builders now and these tutorials are a must view. The trend toward apps is more than you think. A few days ago I shared a Haiku Deck about the future of web design 3.0 (http://sco.lt/7r6zkf).

I missed the appification of everything. Apps, the widget-like shrinking of code to Lego blocks, form the core of mobile programming. Since mobile is taking over the smart move is to "appify" everything.

This means thinking of websites as interconnected blocks responding to each other and our visitors in real time (as described in the deck). Best demonstration or analogy for this fluid app future is MIT's David Merrill explaining Siftable at TED http://www.ted.com/talks/david_merrill_demos_siftables_the_smart_blocks.html .

The way Siftables related to one another (they are aware other Siftables are present and have a desire to connect if code expressed as a toy can have desires) and link in order to create a sum is greater than the whole universe is a great way to think about the New Ecommerce.

The new ecom is location agnostic (capable of converting anywhere at anytime and with the merest snippet of Siftable-like code), socially self aware (capable of pulling friends and their influencers into the equation) and appified (small Lego-like blocks snapped together to meet specific needs).

Sometimes we will snap in the predictive analytics block sometimes we might now. Other times we will want the social share block other times not. Design, in this Siftables-like future, becomes a series of WHAT IF conditions and testing, always testing.

Going to be fun and why it is a GOOD idea to become an app builder.

VideoANT - Video Annotation Tool

VideoANT - Video Annotation Tool | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Tutorial > http://blog.lib.umn.edu/bhosack/videoant/2009/10/videoant_tutorial_video.html

I came upon Baiba Svenca's Scoop today and went to the site. Spent some time figuring it out and following the tutorials. When finished, I said to myself, "I'm impressed. This is quite a nice, simple video annotation tool. It has considerable functionality and is quite easy to use."

Since it was a couple of years old, I decided to Google it to see if there were any more similar ones. I found there are quite a number of them, and some are quite complex.

Then, I discovered the You Tube Video Annotation Tool [http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&topic=14354&answer=92710]. Holy Cow! Where have I been? (Apparently, this has been around since Spring 2008.)

This tool is amazing!!! It makes Video Ant, that I was quite impressed with, look like a horse and buggy compasred to an SUV. No doubt, there are, or will be, tools that surpass the YouTube annotator, but for me, now, this offers a dazzling array of functionality. Without spending too much time with it, what I found immediately most impressive is the capability to hyperlink from one video to another - right while the first video is playing. This can turn video videwing into quite a particip[tory experience.

No doubt, many have discovered this before me, but I can't imagine why a lot of folks haven't written about this. For the Flipped Classroom, this offers incredible olpportunities. For student plrojects, again, the possibilities are quite immense.

If anyone has experience using this tool, I'd very much appreciate your adding comments or links below. I want to know more!! -JL
