Ten Popular Ed Tech Tools That Were Updated This Summer

Ten Popular Ed Tech Tools That Were Updated This Summer | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

A couple of weeks ago I published a round-up of popular ed tech tools that were updated this summer. I had a couple of readers ask if they could print the post to pass out in their schools. Yes, you can. To make it easier to print I put the post into PDF format. In creating the PDF I changed some of the "click here" items to written URLs for finding video demonstrations of updated features. The PDF is embedded below, you can also click here for the PDF.

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

by Ian Quillen

"Creating a safe recreation space for teens; protoyping a recyclable lunch tray; setting up a water delivery system to guard against urban fires; building a public awareness campaign to combat hunger. These are just a few of examples of the types of tasks students are taking on when they participate in the Design Learning Challenge, an effort to get students to figure out how to solve real-world problems in their communities.

"Combining project-based learning, with an emphasis on the arts and design thinking, this academic competition now in its third year — a partnership between the Industrial Designers Society of America, or IDSA, and the National Art Education Association, or NAEA — has more than 750 students participating this year."

Some good suggestions provided in a broad way.

Marnie McGillivray's curator insight, March 23, 2014 8:33 PM

I have rescooped this resource from @Rebecca White as it is a great resource for teaching the Design and technology strand and incorporates sustainability. The website focuses on design thinking, 21st century learning skills, design learning research, curriculum frameworks, project based learning and engaging today’s students. It links with the Australian Curriculum for technology including design technology as it is build student computational thinking by getting them to create and evaluate projects which aims towards creating preferred futures.

Katherine Reed's curator insight, April 7, 2014 10:34 PM

This is the background information for competitions that are coordinated between designers and educators to promote students thinking about how to solve real world problems using design.  There are links provided to sample problems and challenges suited for Prep to Year 4 levels as well as more in depth concepts for high school students, such as designing jobs for 2050.  Interesting read and plenty of information to be explored.

Great piece. Visually stunning. Very informative. -JL

From the article:

Give a kid a car and he's probably going to see how high he can ramp it off something. But that shouldn't negate the fact that some very ambitious teens have changed the world.

Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners: SAMR Through the Lens of the Common Core

Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners: SAMR Through the Lens of the Common Core | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

One of my goals is to weave digital tools into the Common Core to design flexible, student driven learning experiences that are Above the Line as defined by the SAMR model. While this might sound like a mouthful of EdTech, I assure you that combining all that is on our crowded plates is far better than tackling each individual initiative in isolation. This idea is supported by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

This is helpful to understand some of these words floating around...like Crowdsourcing - raising money for small business/creative projects through social media. Perhaps school lbraries could take advantage of some new ways to fundraise through social media.

30 Days with Siri

30 Days with Siri | Into the Driver's Seat | Scoop.it

Disclaimer: Apple has done such a good job of giving a Siri a persona that many times throughout this article I will refer to Siri as ‘her’ or ‘she’. Thanks for making me think my phone is a person, Apple.

This is the tale of a 2 hour a day commuter, 8 hour a day Fortune 500 company employee, and part time Lifehack editor living in the USA using Siri over the last 30 days. Enjoy.

It’s hard to believe that the iPhone 4S has already been out for a month. In this small amount of time we’ve seen iPhone 4S battery issues come and go, Siri outages, and data usage problems (that may not really be problems). But, just like every year, the iPhone proves to be one of the best selling smart phones of all time. It isn’t really surprising, is it?...
