"I’ve been a vegetarian for a little over half my life, and I know certain struggles that vegetarians have to put up with. But one area we don’t struggle with is language. I decided to take a mosey through various words connected with vegetables and vegetarianism, and discovered that the produce aisle at the supermarket isn’t just rich in nutrients and health, it’s also rich in linguistic interest… Here’s an interesting word for every letter of the alphabet."

Eliana Lobo's insight:

Two things that have always given me trouble is how to interpret certain food names (particularly if the item does not exist in the U.S., and how to interpret certain cuts of meat (U.S. and Brazilian meat cutters butcher animals differently).

It's always good to know the names of fruits, vegetables and herbs before interpreting for a nutrition consult for a diabetic patient.

Here's hoping this guide with pictures will help you get a handle on the English nomenclature for a lot of the foods we eat.

Facebook in Translation

Facebook in Translation | Medical Interpreter Training | Scoop.it

Five months ago, we launched the first translated version of Facebook in Spanish. Since then, the internationalization team and its community translators have been busy translating the site into sixteen more languages. We now support—among others—French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and Italian. You can see the full list of languages, or change your language settings, from the language selector in the footer on any page.

Our goal is to support Facebook in the native language of all our users and people who want to use the site. In this regard, we've received requests from thousands of people who want to help translate Facebook into languages beyond the sixteen released languages and the eight that are in the process of being translated.

Based on this feedback, we opened 55 new languages this week for translation by the community. Now native speakers can use our Translations application to translate Facebook into additional Asian languages (Malaysian, Vietnamese), African dialects (Zulu, Xhosa), regional varieties (British English, Canadian French) and even rarely spoken languages, such as Latin and Esperanto.

I've found equivalents for terminology used in human resources, pedagogy, forestry, manufacturing, automotive, aeronautic, legal and medical professions.

"This web site is designed for beginning international and U.S. students who need to understand terms, abbreviations and acronyms in everyday use in U.S. clinical settings. It is a practical quick reference site as opposed to one for scholarly work. Use this site to quickly identify the terms you hear or see while involved in clinical practice.

This dictionary is not intended to be comprehensive. It is limited to terms commonly encountered during the first four months of clinical experience. Students are encouraged to supplement their knowledge of terms by referencing Medline Plus , mediLexicon, texts or journal articles.

This dictionary will permit you to search on clinical terms and see and hear the items, read their definitions and understand their use in the context of a sentence. "The Ribbon, yes – that’s certainly the first thing all current Studio users notice, and I’m sure it’s not necessarily love at first sight for everyone. How many of us were (un)happy about the ribbon in MS Office 2007? However, it’s pretty safe to say that most of us prefer it now over the old menu structure. While the ribbon in Studio might irritate some current users for a while, it is particularly helpful for new users and others who are not aware of all the settings hidden in the old menu structure. The ribbon makes finding all these settings much easier. Take for example the editor font size. I’ve met many users who were unaware that you can change the font size. In order to do that in Studio 2011, you had to go to Tools > Options > Editor > Translation Results Window > Font Size. However, in Studio 2014 it’s easily visible and accessible directly in the View ribbon (Font Adaptation is the last group there) and you can see the effect immediately. And as far as the Options dialog box goes, it is now accessed via the File menu (or Ctrl+F+T) since there’s no Tools menu any more.

Unfortunately, you can’t customize the quick access toolbar yet and it has only a few functions available at this point. Hopefully, that will be ..."
