March 2013 | A Masters programme desgined to train ICT4D champions who combine the necessary skills to see ICT4D projects through to sustainable delivery of development goals.  The 2013 Development Leaders Scholarship - worth £15,200 - is available for developing country applicants to the one-year MSc ICT4D programme; creating ICT4D champions.

Applications open for ISOC Community Grants Programme.


Each year, a number of projects around the world receive funding from the Internet Society to do everything from connecting Sri Lankan farmers with up-to-date sustainable agriculture information, to teaching ICT skills to at-risk youth in Africa, to working with local engineers to further their IPv6 implementation knowledge. These projects are planned and brought to life by our members. You could receive up to $10,000.00 in funding for a project.  Deadline for applications is 1 April 2013.

No es aventurado señalar que la regionalización de la discusión y la agenda sobre la gobernanza de internet empieza a tomar fuerza en el 2008 a partir de la iniciativa del Registro de Direcciones de Internet para América Latina y el Caribe (LACNIC), el Instituto NUPEF y la Asociación para el Progreso de las Comunicaciones (APC) de congregar a los diversos actores América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) para construir un diálogo político multisectorial sobre la temática. Desde ese entonces, el encuentro regional anual, en preparación para el Foro de Gobernanza de Internet (FGI), se ha constituido en una de las plataformas más importantes para la identificación de las prioridades, la discusión sustantiva de los temas de relevancia para la región y la colaboración entre los distintos actores.

13 February 2013 | Managing Director, Internet Exchange Point Nigeria (IXPN), Muhammed Rudman (in picture) shows the told Technology Times team the facility's servers currently being upgraded to deliver more benefits to the internet community in the country. It comes amid a report by the Internet Society (ISOC) that says that, "In Nigeria, the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN) currently localises 300Mbit/s of peak traffic with corresponding reductions in latency, and allows national operators to save over $1 million per year on international connectivity. The presence of the IXP induced Google to place a cache in Nigeria as the first step in plans to build out Google infrastructure to Lagos, and is at the centre of a partnership to improve communications between universities. The IXP also helped repatriate previously externalised financial platforms for online banking services."

ITU releases latest global technology development figures | ITU

Geneva, 27 February, 2013 – New figures released today by ITU confirm strong sustained demand for information and communication technology (ICT) services, with uptake spurred by a steady fall in the price of broadband Internet.


ITU’s The World in 2013: ICT Facts and Figures report predicts that there will soon be as many mobile-cellular subscriptions as people inhabiting the planet, with the figure set to nudge past the seven billion mark early in 2014. More than half of all mobile subscriptions are now in Asia, which remains the powerhouse of market growth, and by the end of 2013 overall mobile penetration rates will have reached 96% globally, 128% in the developed world, and 89% in developing countries.

15 February 2013 | With a growing number of broadband networks and increasing mobile connectivity, Latin America has seen a boom in Internet usage. There are an estimated 255 million Internet users in Latin America and the Caribbean, representing around 43 percent of the region’s population. Argentina leads the region in terms of Internet penetration at 68 percent, according to a 2012 Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers study. Chile, Uruguay, and Colombia follow with the highest penetration rates in Latin America, with more than 50 percent having online access.
