Futurist's Cheat Sheet: Internet of Things

Futurist's Cheat Sheet: Internet of Things | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Curator Tom George: Was Maximum Overdrive the Stephen King film in which "Things" started going crazy. I believe it was, although I may need to stand corrected.

Allow me to play the Devil's advocate here for a moment. Many miles away a deviant mind had finally got a connection.

On a quiet street in a nice upscale suburban home where no one is home in a beautiful gourmet kitchen a light on a toaster suddenly turns on and the lever drops.

In a matter of 20 minutes the house begins to burn and flames engulf the place.

Does this sound like something out of a science fiction horror story? Well then some food for thought as you enjoy this piece

about the future and the "Internet of Things"

Like me! Like me! Doing business in the Facebook age

Like me! Like me! Doing business in the Facebook age | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it
Summary: Social media is infiltrating business and changing the way we work. But the psychology of Twitter and Facebook boils down to a number of essential truths: power and relationships matter.

Curator Tom George: Are we flirting with disaster? This is an interesting article which really speaks volumes about the rise and use of social media.

Exerpt: "It's all about giving people the tools and controls that they need, to be comfortable sharing the information that they want... A lot of what we are doing is as much psychology and sociology as it is technology."

Curator Tom George: So are you really aware of the psychology aspect of why you do what you do on Facebook? If in fact we are simply trying to grow our fan base, then wouldn't it be a fair statement to say that 95% percent of our actions are geared to that end. There are some pitfalls I believe we should be careful of. I will let you do a little soul searching and decide for yourself what is the truth. If however we are participating in something that is as much about psychology and sociology as it is about technology, I think this is extremely important to get right.

Sociology is really about what large groups of people do, society and what is excepted behavior. Now I am not a sociologist, but in reflecting on this I do think that there are certain qualities we as human being posess, really good attributes that are very important to our advancement, and humanity and that somehow these qulaities are getting deluded.

With this being said I will let you form your own opinions, but perhaps instead of the focus being on growing the Fan base perhaps we should just focus on making a positive impact and meaningful insightful dialogue with the fans we already have.

One more excerpt.

However, while we do not understand the intricacies of our relationship with social networks, our usage is not without its psychological risks, as Chamorro-Premuzic warns: "The danger is that people who get hooked have this narcissistic delusion... that people care about their tweets. The irony is more and more people are doing it, and nobody really pays attention to what others do."

Enjoy this brilliant article.

How 5 Creative Brands Pin on Pinterest | Jeffbullas's Blog | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Curator Tom George: The pace of digital content that is being created on a daily basis is staggering. The right signal to noise ratio is hard to find. With our ever present and shorter attention spans, brands need to find ways to stand out in the crowd. This is a process though. It should also be a process of thought leadership. One you must learn how to develop for your brand. it takes time and consistency to work.

I want to quote one of our articles that was written by Rachel Parker of Resonance Social Media here.

http://www.internetbillboards.net/2012/08/content-marketing-its-a-marathon-not-a-sprint/

Be sure to check this one out. Think about the title "Content marketing it's a marathon not a sprint" In her article she talks about the time and effort it takes to create value from content marketing. I think it is a good fit to mention with this piece.

The thing is it takes time. Not only does it take time, but you must use the tools at your disposal and use them the right way. You must become both a publisher and a storyteller and an expert all rolled up into one.

I enjoyed this exerpt from this article.

"The more engaged and the larger the tribes on these social media channels the greater the velocity and sharing that will result. Done correctly and with persistence will result in online visibility that will break through the clutter".

Profound right! Anyway without further delay enjoy this piece on How 5 Creative brands pin on Pinterest"

Reddit Rising: Community Site Just Had Its Coming-Out Party

Reddit Rising: Community Site Just Had Its Coming-Out Party | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

From News Aggregator to News Maker

For the last 18 months, I’ve watched Reddit’s role as a media influencer and informer rise steadily and stealthily. Reddit has increasingly become a place that I discover news, stories and issues before they bubble up to the mainstream.

I used to classify Reddit in the same bucket as other community sites such as Slashdot, Hacker News, MetaFilter, Fark and Digg. But Reddit has surpassed all of those sites when it comes to pure influence.

That was never more apparent than with the SOPA debate earlier this year. The opinions, research and plans for blackouts were discussed and disseminated from the site itself.

Rather than just being an aggregator of news, the Reddit community was making the news.

Why Topic Pages Are The Next Big Thing

Why Topic Pages Are The Next Big Thing | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it
Chronological and real-time consumption of content just doesn't work anymore. It's time for topic pages to add a layer of organization on top.

However it happens, personally I'm convinced that topic pages are going to become ever more important in this unruly Web. There's simply too much content to consume nowadays, so the great challenge of online publishing is to organize it better. Topic pages are the solution.

Want to get more attention on Facebook? It's simple: know what appeals to human nature. What types of photo status updates get attention on Facebook!

Being successful in social media, on Facebook in particular, has a lot to do with understanding human nature. Nowhere is that more apparent than with the success of certain types of photo status updates.

Thanks to EdgeRank, not all Facebook status updates are created equal. The more your latest update gets comments, likes and shares, the more your friends will see it. So if you want to get noticed on Facebook, pay attention to what captures the imagination, hearts and minds of your friends.

This is where your understanding of human nature (and of course, your particular audience) comes in. Every audience has its unique nuisances, but in general, what appeals to people can be summed up in the following categories:

Is Twitter anything more than an online echo chamber?

Is Twitter anything more than an online echo chamber? | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Is there something inherently progressive and liberal about online communication sites such as Twitter? Or does it just seem that way?

On her Facebook page recently, Guardian columnist Suzanne Moore said she was tired of Twitter because people mostly just follow those they agree with. They're not interested in debate.

"You chose who to follow. There is a whole world of deep dark Twitter if you follow those who don't think like you. But people don't do that. I would not so much say it's leftwing as knee jerk. So outrage over a Daily Mail article happens every day, which is frankly daft. Sometimes it can be about a piece published ages ago but no one had noticed till Twitter went berserk.

"Generally though it is the province of the liberal left and for me it has become more and more unthinking and less and less interesting," Moore told Guardian Technology.

Google Indexing Facebook User Posts, Previously Off-Limits

Google Indexing Facebook User Posts, Previously Off-Limits | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Facebook has earned its reputation as an AOL-like walled garden by keeping most of the content generated within Facebook hidden from those who haven’t logged in.

Not only does a login screen stop general Internet users from viewing Facebook content without logging in, it also impedes search engine indexing.

Currently, Google can index:

a limited view of Facebook user profiles“Fan” Pages, including user postsFacebook comments left on third-party sites

At one point in time, search engines were also able to index many Facebook groups, but this does not appear to be the case any longer. I should also note that users may change a privacy setting so search engines can’t index their specific profile.

The Merging Markets of Journalists, Publishers, Agencies, and Brands

The Merging Markets of Journalists, Publishers, Agencies, and Brands | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Marketing used to do two things: Advertising and PR. Agencies came up with ideas, Newspapers were "the bringers of news", Authors wrote stories, publishers distributed them, and book stores sold them.

Each group were living in a very carefully confined media silo, and back then it made sense to target each one individually. This is why a site like Adage is targeting marketing professionals and why a site like Nieman Journalism Lab targets journalists - they used to be two completely different markets.

But if you are a regular reader of this site, you might have noticed that I mix them together. One day I write about the future of books, the next what promoted posts on Facebook means, followed by a report on newspapers and their paywalls.

A Tuscan Garden Tutorial

A Tuscan Garden Tutorial | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it
Designer Charlotte Moss brings home eight key lessons from her grand tour of Italian estates.

1. Create an axis (or two).

On vast properties such as the Boboli Gardens of the Pitti Palace in Florence, it becomes necessary to draw the eye into the distance by framing the view with trees. The primary axis of the Boboli begins in the courtyard. The secondary axis, running east to west, isn't visible until you are upon it as high hedges block the view. Creating movement for the eye and preventing monotony, statues of classical figures, placed amid the tall cypresses, call out to you as you walk into the distance.

10 Companies That Totally Nailed Their Taglines

10 Companies That Totally Nailed Their Taglines | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Curator Tom George: I have been kicking around the idea for a while now. This is the notion that a phrase, or a few words can convey the innate meaning of what we as a company and online community do. It is called a Tagline.

In the business world the tagline is the premier calling card, if it is a great one your message will precede you. I remember a few good ones. How about "You have a friend in the business" or "Where do you want to go today"

As you will see in this beautiful article to follow there have been some very good Tag Lines, and these are 10 of the best.

I however do need a little inspiration. Our tagline is "Where Creativity and People Connect" And I like it, but I am not in love with it. I want to be in love with our company tagline for Internet Billboards.

Imagine what that feels like. Perhaps someone somewhere was involved with this brainstorming process in some agency for Nike. Things got a little heated and someone shouted out "Just Do It" maybe referring to getting the job done, you know of selecting the tagline and then someone shouted back, Oh my God That is it. "Just do it" You just nailed it!

Can I get a little help, perhaps bribe you even. I need some help coming up with our tagline. Can we do better than "Where creativity and people connect? I think we can do better. So what's the story? And one thing for sure enjoy this article on Taglines. Perhaps it will inspire you to nail your own.

When the disciples of Jesus asked Him in Matthew’s gospel chapter 24 concerning what would be the signs of His return, they had in the back of their mind the biblical teaching of the eternal kingdom of the offspring of David. They wanted to know when Jesus would be placed upon that throne and when He would establish His kingdom on earth not only in a spiritual sense but also a physical sense. Let’s take a look at how Jesus answered this question.

YouTube tests Moodwall, curates videos by mood

YouTube tests Moodwall, curates videos by mood | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

YouTube is testing out a new content curation feature called Moodwall, in which users can browse videos based on different moods or "vibes."

Too much content is not necessarily always a good thing for a content platform. Content curation has been a never ending challenge for YouTube, with 72 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute. However, YouTube is making strides toward tackling curation with a discovery feature called “Moodwall.”

Based on a video released by The Guardian’s James Dart, Moodwall will enable users to browse through videos based on their mood, which YouTube refers to as a “Vibe.” Vibes that users can select from are adjectives including funny, strange, catchy, inspiring and others. The feature appears to have been rolled out to a select number of users for testing purposes.

Should You Hire Staff Based on Their Klout Score?

Should You Hire Staff Based on Their Klout Score? | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Klout’s system monitors the frequency and shareability of people’s updates across social networks such as Twitter, Google Plus, Facebook and Pinterest. Through an algorithm, the service gives a score to everyone who signs up. And because Twitter is indexable by spiders, the social scoring service has a number for every tweeter with a public account. Klout’s founder Joe Fernandez explains the service and its implications in greater detail. Should employees be evaluated on the price of their “social currency”? How do you measure something so abstract?

Klout is an interesting metric because, in theory, it quantifies how well people are engaging with culture. Using criteria such as regularity of online conversation and network reach, a user gets a higher score based on how frequently they are involved in discussions and how far those discussions are traveling. Our team’s conclusion was that if they did their job well and inspired their clients, then their social conversation would increase and their Klout scores should rise over time.

Ad Agencies from Los Angeles to New York City Reveal Their Case Studies for Marketing Strategies that Go Viral.

I’m sorry if you’ve ever hired a social media ninja, samurai, blackbelt, ufc, mma, or wwf. But it was understandable. There was an, arguably, frustrating period of time when the people who actually knew advertising didn’t take well to new media. They had a vested interest in print, radio, tv, and mail. And they were good at it.

It was right about then that all sorts of guys who burnt out on W.o.W. saw an opportunity in Facebook and Twitter. After all, they were dedicating upwards of 12 hours a day on it. They became the social media experts we know today.

How ‘Call Me Maybe’ and Social Media Are Upending Music

How ‘Call Me Maybe’ and Social Media Are Upending Music | Futurism, Ideas, Leadership in Business | Scoop.it

Pop radio would get it rolling before school let out, and soon the song — inevitably one with a big, playful beat and an irresistible hook — would blare from car stereos everywhere. Then came prom singalongs as the song finally became ubiquitous around the Fourth of July. In 1987, it was Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” In 2003, Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.”

But the success of this summer’s hit, Carly Rae Jepsen’s cheerfully flirty “Call Me Maybe,” shows how much the hitmaking machine, as well as the music industry itself, has been upended by social media.
