Many parents give their kids a basic phone as their on-the-go mobile device, and have a laptop or tablet at home using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet and stream movies.

Margaret Rock offers some good advice on integrating/limiting the smartphones/tablet assimilation of your child.  My suggestion, be near your children as they use the devices, keep an eye on what they are doing, explain your expected boundaries and implement some of the built-in content controls.  Explain to your child why an app is asking for login credentials and why they should never give out any information or answer any questions without first consulting their parent.
