This unfettered flow of information online and on cell phone networks does have an ugly side. The mischievous rumour-mongering in the wake of the Assam riots was a case in point, as MMSs and incendiary text messages triggered the largest internal exodus of Indians since partition - people from Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad fled to their hometowns in the Northeast.

This is related to GOV&LAW because it is a public policy issue about the Internet.  The government is discussing ways to control the Internet. I highly disagree with the Internet going into private hands because I believe the government has enough power over us as is and any more power, especially over something this big, is not a good idea to put into their hands...

Last weekend C-Span, the public service network that broadcasts proceedings of the U.S. Congress and other U.S. government functions, aired a segment of its series "the Communicators" featuring ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade; C-Span describes the show as "Half-hour conversations with the leaders who shape our digital future". While the interview is actually just 28 minutes long, and appears to have been recorded on January 28th, it contains some surprising statements that raise some intriguing questions.

In my special role as adviser to the UN Broadband Commission I reported extensively in 2013 on the WCIT-12 conference in Dubai. Unfortunately the world disagreed on a way forward in relation to internet governance. However, despite all the grandstanding of the USA and its western allies, simply ignoring it and saying "there is no room for governments to be involved in internet governance" - will not make the issue go away.
