Google will give you 2GB of free cloud storage today — if you complete this simple checklist

Google will give you 2GB of free cloud storage today — if you complete this simple checklist | Internet Presence | Scoop.it
Google's "security checkup" process is quick and painless. And you get a pretty sweet bonus just for doing it.

In honor of “Safe Internet Day,” Google will give you 2GB of permanent storage in your Drive account on Tuesday — if you agree to take a minute-long security checkup on your Google account.

Google’s “security checkup” process is quick and painless. Google will prompt you to add and check information relating to how and where you access your Google accounts. You can check your recovery information, your connected devices, permissions, passwords, and two-step verification settings. You can simply approve these settings, or you can change any of them. The whole shebang probably takes a minute, if that.

Google ran a similar promotion last year — and people who took part in that promotion will be pleased to learn that these bonuses do stack. So, if you completed the security checkup during this promotions both last year and this year, you'll see an extra 4GB of permanent Drive storage sitting in your account.

You can check to see how much Drive storage you have here. Google gives everyone 30GB of free space to start — having completed this year's security checkup, I now have 32GB of space.

10 Simple Ways To Think About Content Marketing

10 Simple Ways To Think About Content Marketing | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Content marketing is not as complex and complicated as we make it be.

You don’t have to be an Einstein to be successful. Einstein himself said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”

So, let’s talk about a simple content marketing strategy!

Many marketers and sales professionals still struggle with the concept of modern marketing. Online credit monitoring startup Credit Karma is rolling out free credit reports. And no, it's not a scam.

Over the years, consumers have been burned by websites offering “free” credit reports which had more than a few strings attached. Adults 50+ Now Dominate All Consumer Spending — Medium

Adults 50+ Now Dominate All Consumer Spending — Medium | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

The holiday season is once again upon us and this year marketers have an unprecedented opportunity to blow their sales out of the water. For the first time in history, consumers over 50 make up the majority — 51 percent — of all of consumer spending according to just-released data from the U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey.

While marketers are preoccupied with Millennials — who became the biggest adult age demo this year — consumers over 50 control 70 percent of our country’s wealth, making them a significantly greater holiday sales opportunity than their kids.

One might expect that 50+ would account for the majority of health (63%) and insurance (68%) expenditures. However, when it comes to buying for everyone on their holiday lists, consider that people 50+ are now responsible for 51 percent of all entertainment spending as well as 57 percent of big ticket items such as new cars and trucks....

How to Successfully Promote Your Blog

How to Successfully Promote Your Blog | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Many influencers talk about the 80/20 rule: you should spend 20% of your time creating content and 80% of your time promoting it.

Although I think this ratio really depends on your job, needs and company, it does capture one thing: if you write amazing content but don’t shout out your did so, no one will hear you. And as far as promoting your blog goes, you can pick and choose on the list above the items that make most sense to your company. If for instance you work for a very technical B2B company and your target audience is above 50 years old, you might want to consider investing in LinkedIn rather than Facebook, leverage influencers and invest time in guest blogging. It all really depends on your audience, where they are and what they care about. There is one very important point I’d like to add to this infographic: it’s not content repurposing (which I thing is one of the leanest way to do content marketing, it saves an incredible amount of time), it’s content recycling. Why Facebook's 'dislike' button could change the future of branding | Branding | Creative Bloq

Why Facebook's 'dislike' button could change the future of branding | Branding | Creative Bloq | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Sources have confirmed that the new venture won't actually be as simple as a new 'dislike' button designed to direct negative sentiment. Facebook will in fact be testing a series of five new reaction buttons, allowing the user to express a range of five new sentiments towards a post or piece of content.

It's most likely that the buttons will represent a spectrum of positive to negative sentiment.

Earlier this month, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stirred up a press storm by announcing that the network will finally be testing a 'dislike button'. Naturally, the news was met with a lot of excitement.

a look at why your brand should invest time in social video and how to use it to dominate your storytelling efforts..

Social video apps are nothing new. However, these video tools have been slow to gain widespread enthusiasm from brands as a serious content distribution channel — until now.

Meerkat and Periscope put instant video into the hands of the masses, but now we’re finally seeing the rest of the major social networks catch on and make it not only easier to create video content, but also painless to share.

Even traditional social networks are now encouraging brands to mix their storytelling efforts with more social video features. These social apps are making it dead simple to master the art of video storytelling quickly and win the attention of consumers with minimal effort.

So creating video content is easy. But how can you get audiences to actually pay attention? The following apps are stepping up their game and enabling brands to share more creative, authentic, instant video than ever. Success was below mediocrity so to say. I asked myself what was the one thing that held me back from making lots of money online over the last few years?

Delivering the internet of the future - at the speed of light

Delivering the internet of the future - at the speed of light | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

The research by High Performance Networks (HPN) group in the University of Bristol’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has found, for the first time, a scientific solution that enables future internet infrastructure to become completely open and programmable while carrying internet traffic at the speed of light.

The current internet infrastructure is not able to support independent development and innovation at physical and network layer functionalities, protocols, and services, while at the same time supporting the increasing bandwidth demands of changing and diverse applications.

The research addresses this problem with a new high performance network infrastructure that is open and programmable and uses light to carry internet traffic.  It introduces new concepts of open source optical internet enabled by optical white box and software defined network technologies

Dr Reza Nejabati, Reader in Optical Networks in the HPN group, said: “Hardware and software technologies reported in this paper can potentially revolutionised optical network infrastructure the same way that Google Android and Apple iOS did for mobile phones. These technologies will hide complexity of optical networks and open them up for traditional programmers and application developers to create new type of internet applications taking advantages of speed of light.”

Dimitra Simeonidou, Professor of High Performance Networks and who leads the HPN group, added: “New internet technologies frequently emerge, but most of them rarely result in new and revolutionary internet applications. The technologies suggested could pave the way for the creation of new internet services and applications not previously possible or disruptive. The technologies could also potentially change the balance of power from vendors and operators that are monopolising the current internet infrastructure to wider users and service providers.”

Reference: Optical network democratization by Reza Nejabati, Shuping Peng and Dimitra Simeonidou is published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A.

About the High Performance Networks (HPN) group
The High Performance Networks group (HPN) led by Professor Dimitra Simeonidou specialises in the application of advanced hardware and software technologies, targeting the future optical networks for Internet of Things (IoTs), data centres, grid/cloud-based applications and distributed technologies etc.  The group is equipped with world-class laboratories, including state-of-the-art optical transmission testbeds, and software-defined network experimental platform.

The group has been at the forefront of world research and development in the fields of:

  • Next generation optical transmission networks;
  • Optical packet and burst switching;
  • Optical data centre solutions and architecture;
  • Grid and cloud networking;
  • Software-defined networking (SDN) and optical network virtualization;
  • Hybrid-network domains orchestration and service management;
  • Smart City ICT Solutions.

The HPN laboratory has dedicated connectivity to both national and international research network infrastructures and forms part of the UK National Dark Fibre Infrastructure Service (NDFIS). This network infrastructure has enabled the development of close collaborations with leading research institutions and industry across the UK, Europe, USA, Brazil and Japan.

The Dangerous Ways We Compare Ourselves on Social Media and How To Stop

The Dangerous Ways We Compare Ourselves on Social Media and How To Stop | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Comparison is part of being a human, it seems, but the way in which we compare ourselves to others on social media is dangerously out of proportion.

2015 marked a year of big life events, according to my Facebook feed. Not a single day—and I do mean not one—went by without one of my friends or acquaintances either getting engaged, getting pregnant, getting married or having a child. Now, it didn’t matter that I’m not in any way ready for these things to happen to me—regardless of this, the feeling of missing out and somehow ‘failing at life’ became more and more prominent as the months went by. I looked around at my tiny apartment and thought about how, for the first time in my life, I was not in school and not working towards anything in the near future. Thoughts of loneliness and all my failed relationships began to feel overwhelming, and the suffocating pressure of student loans felt tighter and heavier than ever before.

Comparing myself to others is nothing new, and I, like many, have struggled with the ups and downs of self-confidence since elementary school. But since social media gained considerable momentum midway through my high school days, the comparing game has sped up as well.

50% of content gets eight shares or less. So even if you’re a great marketer, it’s really tough to get people’s attention — never mind getting the rightpeople’s attention.

But in a world of constant noise, competing channels, and short attention spans, there is still a way to win and build an audience: you have to make something that is genuinely worth someone’s time. Plain and simple you have to make something that is better.And if you’re doing startup marketing, this should be encouraging, because for the most part, people are lazy. Everyone is looking for a hack or a shortcut, and that means that most people won’t put in the effort needed to get someone’s attention....

You can finally test your internet speed without Adobe Flash

Speedtest.net is something of an institution for checking how quick your internet speed is, but it's been stuck in the past for years using Adobe Flash to perform the test.

Good news: as Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, has finally begun testing a HTML5 version of the service and it’s better than ever.

You won’t be needing any plugins anymore, as the new and improved version performs everything in your browser without any additional requirements.

Sure, it’s hard to get excited about a speed-testing site in general, but it’s a good harbinger of the inevitable death of Adobe Flash.

As fewer important tools rely on Flash it gets easier to drop it entirely from our computers — we just need Netflix and Hulu to fully say goodbye so we can get rid of it forever.

Apple Patents Touch ID 'Panic Mode' for Instant Access to Emergency Services

Apple Patents Touch ID 'Panic Mode' for Instant Access to Emergency Services | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

“The United States Patent and Trademark Office today published a patent application initially filed by Apple in May of 2014, describing a method for users to designate a specific finger to unlock an iPhone with using Touch ID, which would then cause the iPhone to enter a "panic mode" (via Business Insider). The mode could then tell the iPhone to completely lock down, limiting access to personal data if a user is being forced to unlock their iPhone.
Currently, Apple allows users to enter up to five different fingerprints to unlock an iPhone, so users would just have to designate which is the "emergency" print in the Touch ID settings menu. Apple's patent describes a situation in which a thief attempts to rob someone's iPhone from them to gain access to their personal and private data stored within, and the user being robbed quickly placing the panic mode finger on Touch ID so the thief can't access any data. Welcome to hell: Apple vs Google vs Facebook and the slow death of the web | The Verge

So let's talk about ad blocking.

You might think the conversation about ad blocking is about the user experience of news, but what we're really talking about is money and power in Silicon Valley. And titanic battles between large companies with lots of money and power tend to have a lot of collateral damage.

iOS 9 came out yesterday (in fits and starts) and with it, support for content blockers in iOS 9. There is already a little cottage industry of ad blockers available, and you should definitely try one or two — they will radically improve your mobile web experience, because they will... block huge chunks of the web from loading.

what we're really talking about is money and power in Silicon Valley

Those huge chunks — the ads! — are almost certainly the part you don't want. What you want is the content, hot sticky content, snaking its way around your body and mainlining itself directly into your brain. Plug that RSS firehose straight into your optic nerve and surf surf surf 'til you die.

Top Website Design Mistakes Small Business Owners Make

Top Website Design Mistakes Small Business Owners Make | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Your website is the central focal point of your online marketing. Cure these website design mistakes that prevent visitors from connecting with your brand.

Your website is the virtual front door to your business and an integral part of your inbound marketing strategy. In many cases, it is the first experience people have with your brand.

But when someone comes to your website, what type of first impression does it project? Is your site welcoming and professional? Can visitors quickly find what they are looking for? Or does your website turn away prospective customers because it is confusing and doesn’t make your visitor feel as if you understand their needs?

In order to develop your website so that it helps drive inbound leads, you must first understand your target audience. Put yourself in your target audience’s shoes and thoroughly understand:

  • Why they are searching for a solution?
  • What do they need?
  • How can you help them?

Your website should introduce your business to the target visitor in a way that relates to them and encourages them to dig deeper into what you have to offer. When scanning your content, the visitor is subconsciously asking “what’s in it for me”? If your website doesn’t answer that question or convince them that you understand their needs, they will look elsewhere.

Having a well-developed, professional web presence is a requirement for gaining new customers and establishing credibility. To make your website attract, educate and encourage visitors to learn more, avoid the following website design mistakes that keep your visitors from connecting with your business. A Simple Plan for Writing One Powerful Piece of Online Content per Week - Copyblogger | Internet Presence | Scoop.it
Consistently good content creation is the backbone of online business. But how can you make that happen week in and week out to build your business?
Quality over quantity

If you believe Jon Morrow (and who doesn’t?), you know that writing one epic post per week is a better long-term strategy than writing mediocre content every day.

That’s what you’re aiming for in your start here: one weekly post that will attract attention, establish your authority, and encourage people to share your information.

And keep in mind, Brian Clark built Copyblogger.com by writing two posts per week in the beginning.

It all starts on morning one.
