How Social Media Privacy Settings Could Affect Your Future

How Social Media Privacy Settings Could Affect Your Future | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Could Facebook's new privacy policy affect your child's -- and your own -- future prospects?

In an effort to win back its teenage audience, Facebook made a major change last week to its privacy policy. Teenagers have been rapidly abandoning the social network in favor of competitors such as Instagram and Snapchat.

Now, 13- to 17-year-old Facebook users have the ability to post their comments and photos publicly. Prior to this change, teenagers were restricted to sharing their posts with friends and friends-of-friends in an effort to protect this young generation from predators.

While I can't predict how these new privacy settings will affect Facebook's business, I am certain the change could negatively impact this generation's personal brand and with it, their future college and job prospects.

As Kelly Clay put it in her article for Forbes, the former privacy policy was "designed to protect teenagers not only from strangers, but also themselves." As any social media strategist will tell you, it takes only a few strokes of a keyboard -- or mobile device -- to do some serious damage to one's brand.

The price of solar power just fell 50% in 16 months – Dubai at $.0299/kWh!

The price of solar power just fell 50% in 16 months – Dubai at $.0299/kWh! | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Dubai received bid of $.0299/kWh for 800MW of solar power. This price represents the lowest yet recorded for solar power. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has received 5 bids from intenational organisations for the third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, said HE Saeed Mohammed AlTayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. The lowest recorded bid at the opening of the envelopes was US 2.99 cents per kilowatt hour. The next step in the bidding process will review the technical and commercial aspects of the bids to select the best one.

In the USA, in 2014 and with incentives, utility scale solar projects averaged $.05/kWh. On this bid alone, five companies bid below $.045/kW – without subsidies.

In 2015, we saw Dubai sign a deal at a fixed rate of $0.0584 cents over 25 years with no incentives. In the summer of 2015 Autin, TX received almost 1,300MW`of bids at under $.04/kWh. Shortly afterwards, we saw Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s NV Energy agreed to pay $.0387/kWh for power from a 100-megawatt project that First Solar Inc. is developing. Lastly, just this month Enel Green power signed contracts for $.036/kWh in in Mexico and $.03/kWh in Morroco.

The price per kWh just fell 50% – and it did it in less than sixteen months. Read more: click image or title.

The process of upgrading Visme started back in March of 2015. After eight months and thousands of man hours, we can comfortably say the new Visme is easier to use and all around more refined. It addresses over 30 user requests, incorporates new features and provides users with a much smoother experience.

When comparing the new Visme to our legacy version, users have reported an improvement of over 50% in productivity and a noticeable reduction in friction in their work flow.

If you are an existing user, you will not see any cosmetic changes in the Visme interface, but a cumulation of numerous small refinements (and new features) which will provide a smoother workflow and improve the overall user experience in comparison with the existing version.

So you’re excited!

You’ve made that important decision – you want to be a solopreneur.  You have the passion and you’ve thought through all the implications.

(If you’re not sure about the implications, this article will help.)

It is exciting – and perhaps a little scary at the same time.

Some of your anxiety may be about confidence: “Do I know enough?”; “Why would people listen to me?” for example. That’s perfectly natural – and we will deal with that, step by step.

Part of you, though, may be worried about the financial side of things. After all, you’ve seen ads by people offering to build your website for thousands of dollars. Or maybe you’ve listened to webinars by “gurus” who promise you will become a millionaire overnight – but only if you sign up to their $2,000 course.

Google will give you 2GB of free cloud storage today — if you complete this simple checklist | Internet Presence | Scoop.it
Google's "security checkup" process is quick and painless. And you get a pretty sweet bonus just for doing it.

In honor of “Safe Internet Day,” Google will give you 2GB of permanent storage in your Drive account on Tuesday — if you agree to take a minute-long security checkup on your Google account.

Google’s “security checkup” process is quick and painless. Google will prompt you to add and check information relating to how and where you access your Google accounts. You can check your recovery information, your connected devices, permissions, passwords, and two-step verification settings. You can simply approve these settings, or you can change any of them. The whole shebang probably takes a minute, if that.

Google ran a similar promotion last year — and people who took part in that promotion will be pleased to learn that these bonuses do stack. So, if you completed the security checkup during this promotions both last year and this year, you'll see an extra 4GB of permanent Drive storage sitting in your account.

You can check to see how much Drive storage you have here. Google gives everyone 30GB of free space to start — having completed this year's security checkup, I now have 32GB of space.

A Non-Designer's Guide to Creating Engaging Images for Social Media

A Non-Designer's Guide to Creating Engaging Images for Social Media | Internet Presence | Scoop.it
Learn how to create engaging images for all of your social media pages and profiles - no previous design skills necessary!

A great social media marketer today and an awesome advertiser in the 1960s have much in common.

David Ogilvy, the father of advertising, was famous for spending an inordinate amount of time on headlines. Why? Because that’s the line that people read the most, so it mattered a lot.

Ogilvy was a master at stuff like this — prioritizing what was really important.

If he lived through the age of social media, I’m fairly certain Ogilvy would say something like:

On the average, many more people engage with images as read the copy in social media posts. When you have crafted your social media image, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.

Images have never been more important in social. They’re the key to driving greater online engagement, much like a great headline in advertising.

The only issue here is that if, like me, you aren’t über-skilled in graphic design, creating eye-catching engaging images can be difficult. So how can non-designers like me still create incredible images for social media? One way is by learning simple, repeatable design principles.

Here are 3 key design principles that will help you create engaging social images every time! Read more: click image or title.

What Does An Online Business Look Like Today? - The SiteSell Blog

What Does An Online Business Look Like Today? - The SiteSell Blog | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

Starting an online business today isn’t like how it was when the Internet was young and new. Find out what it takes.

Are you familiar with the California Gold Rush? Back in 1848, James Marshall found gold at Sutter’s Mill, and within a year there were hundreds of thousands of miners flocking to California to pan every river, stream and creek-bed for a handful of those valuable nuggets.

The promise of “free money” brought in settlers by covered wagon or sailing vessels, and since there wasn’t yet an established State or government, there were no laws or property rights.

But quickly, things changed. Government was formed, a constitution drafted, and within months the new state of California was formed. Legislation and regulation was put into place, and the ‘rush’ evolved into a more long-term period of resource mining.

That’s exactly how the early days of the Internet looked.

There was no legislation, no government… just people jumping in and taking advantage of the situation. While simply being first didn’t guarantee success (which we saw clearly with the Gold Rush, where discoverer James Marshall died poor and bankrupt years later), being first certainly made a lot of things easier.

As services like Web Crawler and Alta Vista developed databases and search capability for the Internet, being among the first to create a website and online business meant there was little to no competition.

If you wanted an online business back in the 1990’s, it was relatively easy to put up a webpage or two that offered a product or service, and achieve some real success.

But it’s not like that anymore. Read more: click image or title.

Even traditional social networks are now encouraging brands to mix their storytelling efforts with more social video features. These social apps are making it dead simple to master the art of video storytelling quickly and win the attention of consumers with minimal effort.

So creating video content is easy. But how can you get audiences to actually pay attention? The following apps are stepping up their game and enabling brands to share more creative, authentic, instant video than ever. Here’s a look at why your brand should invest time in social video and how to use it to dominate your storytelling efforts. Read more: click image or title.

How To Build A Viral Blog In Any Niche

How To Build A Viral Blog In Any Niche | Internet Presence | Scoop.it
Learn how to easily build a viral blog in ANY niche even when you are clueless about the topic. These strategies can bring thousands of visitors on day one.

Maybe you have tried to build your own site before and failed. Same for me.

The one thing I was always missing was traffic. I tried everything from blog commenting and forum posting over distributing free ebooks and finally all the way to SEO.

Success was below mediocrity so to say. I asked myself what was the one thing that held me back from making lots of money online over the last few years?

It was a combination of low content quality (amazon niche sites), lack of consistency in posting fresh articles and finally missing knowledge about marketing and networking I guess. Then I saw a blog post on Viperchill about viral news sites and it hit me.

When I realized that this was possible I decided to start over again. This time I wanted to build a viral authority blog in my favourite niche which is WordPress, Marketing and all that stuff.

Here's a blueprint how I built the blog and received over four thousand visitors in my first three weeks.

Follow my journey to success and I guarantee you it will work. Read more: click image or title.

Delivering the internet of the future - at the speed of light

Delivering the internet of the future - at the speed of light | Internet Presence | Scoop.it

The research by High Performance Networks (HPN) group in the University of Bristol’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has found, for the first time, a scientific solution that enables future internet infrastructure to become completely open and programmable while carrying internet traffic at the speed of light.

The current internet infrastructure is not able to support independent development and innovation at physical and network layer functionalities, protocols, and services, while at the same time supporting the increasing bandwidth demands of changing and diverse applications.

The research addresses this problem with a new high performance network infrastructure that is open and programmable and uses light to carry internet traffic.  It introduces new concepts of open source optical internet enabled by optical white box and software defined network technologies

Dr Reza Nejabati, Reader in Optical Networks in the HPN group, said: “Hardware and software technologies reported in this paper can potentially revolutionised optical network infrastructure the same way that Google Android and Apple iOS did for mobile phones. These technologies will hide complexity of optical networks and open them up for traditional programmers and application developers to create new type of internet applications taking advantages of speed of light.”

Dimitra Simeonidou, Professor of High Performance Networks and who leads the HPN group, added: “New internet technologies frequently emerge, but most of them rarely result in new and revolutionary internet applications. The technologies suggested could pave the way for the creation of new internet services and applications not previously possible or disruptive. The technologies could also potentially change the balance of power from vendors and operators that are monopolising the current internet infrastructure to wider users and service providers.”

About the High Performance Networks (HPN) group
The High Performance Networks group (HPN) led by Professor Dimitra Simeonidou specialises in the application of advanced hardware and software technologies, targeting the future optical networks for Internet of Things (IoTs), data centres, grid/cloud-based applications and distributed technologies etc.  The group is equipped with world-class laboratories, including state-of-the-art optical transmission testbeds, and software-defined network experimental platform.

The group has been at the forefront of world research and development in the fields of:

  • Next generation optical transmission networks;
  • Optical packet and burst switching;
  • Optical data centre solutions and architecture;
  • Grid and cloud networking;
  • Software-defined networking (SDN) and optical network virtualization;
  • Hybrid-network domains orchestration and service management;
  • Smart City ICT Solutions.

The HPN laboratory has dedicated connectivity to both national and international research network infrastructures and forms part of the UK National Dark Fibre Infrastructure Service (NDFIS). This network infrastructure has enabled the development of close collaborations with leading research institutions and industry across the UK, Europe, USA, Brazil and Japan.
