Susan only knew how to surf website, but not how to build one. Now she runs her own e-business from home, selling ebooks and video courses.
Tell us about your website, www.easy-food-dehydrating.com. When and why did you start your site?

The housing bubble had burst and people were getting laid off from their jobs.  To be honest, that didn’t really affect me because I’ve always had that entrepreneurial streak … since the young age of 15 when I worked on dad’s farms for pocket money and learned that hard work pays off. My dad is a great teacher and a hard worker, himself being self-employed since leaving the (British) Army.  His work ethic rubbed off on me.

In 2008, I was working from home doing mechanical engineering design (with my brother) and then the recession began. Work dried up. What to do? I tried selling stuff on Amazon à la “FBA” (Fulfillment By Amazon) but the only ones being fulfilled were Amazon themselves …

Fast-forward to 2010 … I was watching Glenn Beck when he was on Fox News and he stated that his family had stored dehydrated food down in his basement – for emergency food purposes. The light bulb went off in my head.  You see, we’d been through back-to-back hurricanes in 2004 and we were without power for a couple of weeks. Fresh food ran out and frozen food languished in the freezer … what a waste.

I researched the food dehydrating topic and realized I wouldn’t be the first to start a website on food dehydrating.  I must admit I was a little scared of starting my own website … but excited too.

And then it hit me. How On Earth Was I Going To Start A Website?

I didn’t know a thing about websites, aside from how to surf! And on other websites I noticed “become an affiliate and sell our items on your website.”  What’s an affiliate? I wondered. I then did what we all do: I Googled “get a free website” …

The results yielded what I deserved to see from the search – but seeing as this is a family show I won’t repeat what I read here.  I then did a more realistic search “build a website” and up came a nice young lady who had an SBI! site.  I thought, What’s SBI? I continued reading the lady’s home page, and I was hooked, or rather I was persuaded with common-sense information that SBI! was the “real deal” – chock full of business guidance that “the other” website hosts just don’t offer.

On December 23, 2010, I became the proud parent of a brand new bouncing baby website I’d decided to call Easy Food Dehydrating.  And the rest, as they say, is history! Read more: click image or title.

When it comes to social media, there are two platforms that are no longer optional: Facebook and Google Plus. Yes, Twitter is cool and Pinterest is fun, but they can’t do for your real estate business what Facebook and Google Plus can -- at least not yet.

As a real estate agent, your job is just as much about marketing as it is about actually showing homes. If people don’t know a home is for sale, then there is a very small chance it will sell. So what can you do? Of course, you can do all of the traditional marketing techniques like direct mail, open houses and pounding the pavement, but wouldn’t it be easier (and more cost-efficient) to be able to sell a home from the comfort of your office?

With the ever-increasing clout of social media, this is no longer just a dream. If you play your cards right, it can surely become your reality. In fact, I know because this is a BIG part of my business. My blog is the hub of my business, but it is the social media tools such as Google Plus, Facebook and a few others — along with search engine optimization — that allow me to be in front of more people on a daily basis.

The Revolution Won't Be Televised YOU Will Create & Publish It
Real Estate is about to CHANGE. The space is being "rolled up" by outside forces - forces who know more about Internet marketing than real estate such as Redfin, Zillow and Trulia.

Bloomberg shared the GOOD NEWS (http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-03-07/why-redfin-zillow-and-trulia-havent-killed-off-real-estate-brokers ) about the "resilience" of "the old model". It seems buying a home is something people want help with and are willing to pay for that help.

If the attack of the roll up artists have been at least momentarily slowed there is another problem - how should realtors market themselves. I just scooped a post about niche marketing (http://sco.lt/7V8dLV ).

Finding an ownable "content niche" may be the most important mission any realtor faces and few understand or discuss. An attempt to be all things to all buyers/sellers online is a prescription for disaster.

Online your ability to own a niche such as relocation specialist or passionate about Arts and Crafts bungalows CREATES AN ABILITY TO SELL MORE BROADLY.

This is the CATCH-22 of marketing online where you must effectively narrowcast to have the authority needed to broadcast. Tools mastery reflects this online marketing irony for realtors. YES you can get business from StumbleUpon, but that business may be costly since learning StumbleUpon took away from your mastery of Facebook and GooglePlus.

I don't agree with the elimination of Twitter for realtors. Twitter is the "radio of the web" when you blog something Twitter is a great place to announce its presence. Twitter helps build community and its time to use to mastery is low enough it shouldn't take away from a more concentrated focus in learning how to use Facebook and G+ at high levels.

I do agree with Facebook and G+ along with a blog / website (see my Curatti post on the difference between blogs and websites http://curatti.com/websites-vs-blogs/ ) as the core of any realtors online marketing tool set and arsenal and the linked post does a great job explaining why.

The most important, and counter intuitive, idea is to NARROW to an ownable niche in a real estate agents online marketing since doing so creates the permission and authority needed to benefit from broadcast.


In other words, if you are the Arts and Crafts bungalow expert in Durham, NC you will get more condo and Victorian sales too because your online presence has authority. Trying to become an online authority in more than one niche is HARD to IMPOSSIBLE.

And that online marketing lesson applies to lawyers, doctors, accountants and car dealers too. Find the ownable niche, become an authority even if it is only "local authority" and use Facebook to create community and GooglePlus to create conversation and you will continue to beat back the Zillows of the world.

You thought you knew the Internet. But sites such as Facebook, Amazon, and Instagram are just the surface. There’s a whole other world out there: the Deep Web.

It’s a place where online information is password protected, trapped behind paywalls, or requires special software to access—and it’s massive. By some estimates, it is 500 times larger than the surface Web that most people search every day. Yet it’s almost completely out of sight. According to a study published in Nature, Google indexes no more than 16 percent of the surface Web and misses all of the Deep Web. Any given search turns up just 0.03 percent of the information that exists online (one in 3,000 pages). It’s like fishing in the top two feet of the ocean—you miss the virtual Mariana Trench below.

Much of the Deep Web’s unindexed material lies in mundane data­bases such as LexisNexis or the rolls of the U.S. Patent Office. But like a Russian matryoshka doll, the Deep Web contains a further hidden world, a smaller but significant community where malicious actors unite in common purpose for ill. Welcome to the Dark Web, sometimes called the Darknet, a vast digital underground where hackers, gangsters, terrorists, and pedophiles come to ply their trade. What follows is but a cursory sampling of the goods and services available from within the darkest recesses of the Internet.

With pension pots shrinking, many retired people are starting a small business. We meet three older entrepreneurs

Entrepreneur Sam Taylor was 63 when he retired. He'd worked hard all his life, had a company that floated on the stock market and made enough money to live a life of leisure in southern Spain. So why, eight years later, did he swap sipping sangrias in the sun for starting an online art business in his native Scotland?

"Six months into retirement, I couldn't really hack it. I was bored and I missed the buzz of business," the founder of Creative Arts Gallery explained. After a brief spell as a business angel and directorship roles in Edinburgh he realised the only way he was going to enjoy his later years was to return to self-employment.

He said: "During that time my wife was doing textile art and we got to a position where she had built up a considerable amount of material. We were talking one night and decided we needed to start selling some of it. We recognised that online retail was becoming much more acceptable and thought, let's put my business experience and her artistic talent together and set up an online art gallery."

The site now boasts more than 200 individual pieces by over 30 Scottish contemporary artists. But the couple are not alone in choosing to be their own boss. According to the Prince's Initiative for Mature Enterprise, there are currently 4.17 million self-employed workers in the UK, of which 42% (1.75 million) are over 50. That's up from 38% in 2008. About 1.4 million are between 50 and 64, and 375,000 are 65-plus.
