What is content curation?
Content curation is sorting through a large amount of web content to find the best, most meaningful bits and presenting these in an organized, valuable way.
Or another definition:
"In a world of nearly infinite content, consumers are looking to one-stop shop." by Mike Kaput

Curation is not aggregation.
Aggregation is algorithmic. Curation is handpicked.
The human element of curation is a huge source of its value.

Significant benefits to a good content curation strategy include:
- You improve your relationship with the sites whose content you share.
- You grow your authority on a subject (provided the curation is top-notch).
- You add quality content to your site or timeline and create a great resource for others.
- You save time from creating content yourself, from scratch.

Examples of where you might use content curation:
- Curate content in a weekly blog post.
- Curate content in an email newsletter.
- Curate content on your social media profiles.

How to curate content as efficiently and expertly as possible.
Certainly, there is a time investment involved in doing it right (as with most things done well). There are a number of resources, tools, and tricks that help make the curation process even easier. Here’s what’s involved.

-Find unique places to discover exquisite content
We collected 17 off-the-radar places to search for new content. The off-the-radar spots are often quite good; there’s content on those sites that your audience may not have seen before, which adds an immediate boost of credibility for you and a boost of value your readers.

- Read what you find
I can admit to being tempted to skim a story and share it—or skip the skimming altogether and jump straight to sharing! There’s just so much content to read and so little time.
I’m clearly not alone in this temptation. Do people read what they share? Not exactly.

- Pick out your favorites
As you read, make note of the stories that really stood out to you and that you’d like to share. There are a number of different ways of organizing these, ranging from old-school to highly automated.

Studies show that four basic emotions combine to create our experiences. Here's what that means for the way content is shared online.

Every day it seems like we feel hundreds of different emotions, each nuanced and specific to the physical and social situations we find ourselves in.

According to science, it’s not that complicated by a long shot. A new study says we’re really only capable of four “basic” emotions: happy, sad, afraid/surprised, and angry/disgusted.

But much like the “mother sauces” of cooking allow you to make pretty much any kind of food under the sun, these four “mother emotions” meld together in myriad ways in our brains to create our layered emotional stews.

Robert Plutchik’s famous “wheel of emotions” shows just some of the well known emotional layers.

What a terrific summary article this is about emotions in marketing. It covers not only why emotions work, the author Courtney Seiter also talks about WHICH emotions get shared and why.


Seiter covers happiness, sadness, fear, plus anger and the types of reactions each creates. I also like the charts and graphics she uses to make her points. 


And what I think is really cool is how she shares recent research from IPA dataBANK who validated -- once again -- that pure emotional content wins out over a combination of rational and emotional.


So check out the article. It is well done. If you want to gain mastery over crafting stories with specific emotional content, then this post will bring a lot of clarity to your work.

Interessant artikel over waarom mensen dingen delen via internet. Zowel positieve als negatieve emoties kunnen zorgen voor het virale effect. De woede die Wilde Geert momenteel en regelmatig effectief oproept, helpt om zijn dubieuze boodschap verder te verspreiden. Daar komt waarschijnlijk ook het ontzag vandaan als mensen zeggen: "Hij durft het toch maar te zeggen'. Dat zijn mensen, Nederlanders, die hun verstand overslaan, de emotie gaat voor. MInder mensen dan maar? Dat is een heel ander pleidooi.

Before today, imitation was the greatest form of flattery. If your idea was good enough to be copied, then you were golden. But now, with the state of the web in our lives, this balance is shifting. While “copying” still does exist online, the concept of “copying” is now simply a way to bump your own Google ranking by farming someone else’s content. This, is not flattering. Even if correctly cited, 100% republished work is simply cheating to get ahead. Curation, on the other hand — the meaningful selection, enrichment, and sharing of existing media — combines imitation and creation. Curators have to create a new perspective or idea on top of the existing media which supports the content in the original.

True curators endlessly search for the best of the best, the cream of the crop. Think of them as a “critics of all the things.” Critics are often the our best sources of information — when you are checking out a new restaurant, you often take a look at what Yelp or a quick Google search has to say about them, or perhaps you read an article in your local newspaper about the establishment. Pundits are often in control of the flow of political information. Literary critics determine the success or failure of many authors’ works. Curators of online content are simply critics of many things; people who’ve been incredibly well-educated about a certain topic and are seeking the best things available in the vertical they’ve chosen.

As a creator myself, I’ve seen many straight content creators get upset that their work has been curated. We so hope we can shift this opinion! Curators are paying you the ultimate compliment when they have selected a piece of your’s to enrich and share — they think you are among the best of the best, the creme of the crop.

We all put those 'share' buttons on our sites and blogs. Having a curator pick your content is yet another way of sharing and acknowledging that your content is superb. Good curators have a great following, quality and quantity wise. It's another good way to get the word out.

As a creator, the greatest compliment to receive should be to have your content curated into a collection of the web's best content on a specific subject (namely, the one you're creating content about).


As a curator, the ultimate compliment to give is to properly share and cite all of the content you've created, add your insight while giving due credit to the creator and presenting their content in a meaningful way.
