Good and inspiring thoughts on data governance. In my opinion, one key point for ROI is that the data is actionable. For example, getting a customer 360° view is difficult to turn into ROI unless you can track the impact it has on the offers you propose to the customer.

As a result, I'm sceptical of the categorization between primary, secondary   and tertiary, as tertiary items resonate much more to the lines of businesses than the primary one.

Data governance is the practice of managing the availability, usability, integrity and security of enterprise data to maximize return. The challenge lies in how it must work, through collaboration between IT and business, and across business units. This challenge is one of implementation: creating the necessary communication, power sharing, accountability and joint investment.

Data governance is a response to the growing complexity of the enterprise information infrastructure and the attendant business challenges.

To gain executive support on a data governance initiative you’ll need a strong business case. This can be a a challenge if you’re not operating in the wake of a compelling event. It is helpful to look at the gross value-creation categories and some of the mechanisms for measurement and estimation.

Value creation opportunities related to data governance may be usefully divided into three tranches: primary, secondary and tertiary, as shown in the table.

The relationship between service-oriented architecture (SOA) and master data management (MDM) is very vividly.

An essential principle behind SOA is the reuse of components and the flexibility of using these components to support new functionalities or processes. MDM provides universal components (or services) for consistent data maintenance and distribution. Here the architecture concepts and principles of SOA run into MDM.
