The paradox of big data: It's only useful if you break it into small data

The paradox of big data: It's only useful if you break it into small data | Internet of Things - Technology focus | Scoop.it
All businesses wants to take advantage of big data, but it takes more than desire. In this interview with Digital Clarity Group Analyst Allen Bonde, we discuss some of the challenges facing organizations trying to get control of big data.

"The idea of big data has been around for a couple decades (see timeline here), yet it’s still generally the domain of data scientists and technologists -- and hard to apply to everyday tasks, by everyday people. In a lot of ways, big data is all about volume and machines and processing power, while small data is about end-users, context, and individual requirements."

"Bonde has said part of the problem with big data in business today is that it has for the most part remained the province of data science geeks. For real business people to take advantage of this data, we need to break it down into the last little bit that actually helps make a decision -- what Bonde calls "small data."

Once ce again, this is the key issue: technology is now mature, IT folks need to open up and let it go to give space to business people to start to tame it... And in the other hand, business needs to dedicate some of his time to do so!

Then and only then, the real power of big data would be exploitable by the enterprise.

The relationship between service-oriented architecture (SOA) and master data management (MDM) is very vividly.

An essential principle behind SOA is the reuse of components and the flexibility of using these components to support new functionalities or processes. MDM provides universal components (or services) for consistent data maintenance and distribution. Here the architecture concepts and principles of SOA run into MDM.
