India to have over 500 million mobile internet users by 2017 - ET Telecom

Pre-paid smartphone users spend nearly 72% of their time to access online content while merely 15% of their time is spent on making voice calls, a study of smartphone users by Internet and Mobile Association of India and Times Internet Limited has found.

The study was conducted among 750,000 app users in India.

Malaysia takes step toward digital economy goal

The 2017 Malaysia Budget announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is an incremental step in realizing Malaysia’s vision of a fully connected digital economy, according to IDC.

Although the specific financial breakdown of the budget initiatives is not yet available, IDC Malaysia said the direct and indirect impact on the Malaysian ICT sector is apparent.

Data from IDC suggests that total IT spending that includes infrastructure, software and services will grow by 3.3% to be worth $21.16 billion in 2017.

India's millennials, about 28 per cent of the population, will drive the internet growth especially online transactions in the coming years, a top Morgan Stanley official has said.

"These young people are going to be a lot open to adopting technology and become conduit for improving tech penetration within the entire population as well," said Parag Gupta, the executive director who leads the technology, internet and media practice for Morgan Stanley India.

South Korea again tops ITU's ICT index

South Korea retained its lead as the top country in the ITU's latest annual ICT Development Index (IDI).

The IDI is a composite index that combines 11 indicators into one benchmark measure that determines the level of ICT development across the world.

The 2016 edition of the “Measuring the Information Society Report,” which contained the IDI, was launched during the World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS) in Gaborone, Botswana on Tuesday.

Thailand’s Revenue Department has taken steps to amend laws to allow it to tax overseas operators that make transactions in Thailand in an effort to extend the tax base to fast-growing online businesses.
The amendment is necessary as the existing laws only permit the department to impose taxes on companies located in Thailand, while foreign commerce operators are not taxed for cross-border transactions, Prasong Poontaneat told the Bangkok Post.
