With the pending public offering of Facebook anticipated to be the largest tech IPO in history, it’s an interesting time to think about where we go from here. Some say “social is done,” Facebook is all the social media anyone would ever want or need.

The History of Marketing: An Exhaustive Timeline #Infographic

The History of Marketing: An Exhaustive Timeline #Infographic | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

By Corey Eridon

A detailed timeline Infographic featuring the history of marketing from 1450 to 2012.

Ever since people have had something to sell, we’ve been marketing. But the effectiveness of those marketing methods have waxed and waned over thousands of years, and as consumers and their technologies advanced at a more and more rapid pace, marketers have had to change their game.

At one time, cutting edge technology was limited to just a small segment of the population – and these advancements were slowly rolled out to the masses over decades (and even centuries!). Now, adoption rates are faster than the speed of light and more widespread than ever – and it’s putting control back in the hands of consumers. It’s up to marketers to keep pace in this cluttered, fast-paced world if they want their message heard. Through the lens of marketing history, watch how marketers are succeeding.

Take a look at how technology has changed the way marketers do their jobs, how consumers have responded (not always so favorably), and let us know where you think the future of marketing lies. As always, feel free to share and embed at your leisure!

Every now and then an infographic comes along that isn't just informative, but it gets you to think beyond what you know or think you know.

This is one such infographic...it opens the mind's door to explore possibilities in how a social network can change the world.

In a timeline that spans 13 years, we explore interesting milestones that imagine a future where we leave behind the nascence of a social network to become a Facebook nation.

How Content Turns Prospects Into Customers

How Content Turns Prospects Into Customers | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

By Patricia Redsicker -  http://bit.ly/xPDu0z

How do you attract passionate customers?

What can you do to cut through the noise and get people to notice what you have to say?

The answer is CONTENT—interesting and compelling information that helps solve your customers’ problems.

Why Content?
It’s interesting content that drives people to push that Share button or say to themselves, “Wow! This is a great article! I think I’ll subscribe.”

Here’s an analogy: If a big-time investor invited you to pitch your business idea to him, how much effort would you make to impress him?

I’m guessing that you wouldn’t dare show up without a compelling idea and a well-thought-out strategy. And yet most businesses do just that when it comes to social media marketing.

Given the opportunity to influence an online audience of potential customers, they simply show up without preparing a compelling message.

No wonder they don’t see the results they want with their social media campaigns. http://bit.ly/AkkhCK

What if Romeo and Juliet lived happily ever after, or Van Helsing decided Dracula wasn't worth the trouble? In a high-tech twist on Choose Your Own Adventure, "active fiction" imbues readers with precisely that kind of power.

Launching this month in Amazon's Kindle Store, Coliloquy e-books are peppered with "choice points" that allow readers to take the story in the direction most appealing to them — whether it's experiencing a critical moment through another character's eyes, setting the protagonist on a new path, or seeing what a sex scene would look like with a different partner.

Academics call it the "game-ification" of reading. But given the recent avalanche of interactive literature products, it may be more accurate to call it reading's future.

Who's Winning the Twitter and Facebook Presidential Election? #Infographic

Who's Winning the Twitter and Facebook Presidential Election? #Infographic | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

By Alissa Skelton - http://bit.ly/xjj7SW

@HoldDaWheat

Barack Obama's Facebook and Twitter following leaves Republican presidential candidates in the dust.

The president has more than 25 million Facebook Likes and more than 12.5 million Twitter followers.

Other candidates have followed Obama’s tech-savvy lead. They have signed up for social media platforms and their staffs post regularly.

On average, the 2012 presidential candidates post to their accounts two to five times per day, according to PRMarketing.com, who created this Infographic.

Followers and likes don’t always translate to endorsements, but do you think a candidate’s following could turn into votes?

Why I Don’t Like Your Brand on Facebook - Andrew Blakely

Why I Don’t Like Your Brand on Facebook - Andrew Blakely | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

In a guest post on Brian Solis' blog, Andrew Blakely ran an experiment based on his boss' rant: “This morning my yoghurt told me to find it on Facebook. It didn’t tell me why, it just told me to find it. Why on Earth would I want to find a yoghurt on Facebook? It’s a yoghurt!"

Blakely followed all brands who asked him too, and of 40 some brands only 10 actually provided any reason to Like them on Facebook.

Is you enterprise in the same boat, reflexively crying for your customers to Like you, but providing no value in return?

Storytelling: the Art of Web Development

Storytelling: the Art of Web Development | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

In the end, a successful website has a narrative. We can tell something about who the users are that the site is targeting. We can understand what those users can gain by having an experience in the product. The navigation, tools, tone, and environment should support the user and their quest.

While short on specifics or examples, this article is still a good reminder that business websites need an overarching narrative and stories embedded within.

I do like how the author discusses creating customer scenarios so you can craft the website narrative with confidence.  When the author says, "Defining these story arches...." I'm not sure if he means 'story arcs' or 'story archetypes' but both are important.

Since I am once again embarking on re-doing my website (ay yi yi), I'm going to be designing it using all the tools available to me: stories & storytelling, overal narrative, scenarios, and archetypes. But this will take awhile so don't expect anything overnight :)
