Data Storytelling: The Art and Science of Social Media Metrics

Data Storytelling: The Art and Science of Social Media Metrics | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

What is data storytelling?
In two parts, it’s (1) how we use data visualization to help us see and read the story social data tells, and (2) how we as social media experts package that story and make adjustments to campaigns.

It should, but unless we can find the answer to the question “so what?” all that data just seems time-consuming. That’s why we practice data storytelling. It’s the act of data visualization before, during and after mining/analyzing data.

For all of us who want to know how to share the stories data tells, then this article gives a great framework. You'll have to read down to the end, however, to get to the gold.

Most of the article is about measuring social media campaigns. Then we get to the good stuff: the model for storytelling with data that contains 5 elements.

The other insights are good, so grab those. Then pay attention to those 5 elements and start working on your data stories. The model should get you started.

Google introducing "Knowledge Graph" - an intelligent search engine

Google introducing "Knowledge Graph" - an intelligent search engine | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

Google has launched the Knowledge Graph, which it says will help you discover new information quickly and easily, according to the Official Google Blog.

Think of it as Google + Wikipedia + Wolfram Alpha + Bing.

Take a query like [taj mahal]. For more than four decades, search has essentially been about matching keywords to queries. To a search engine, the words [taj mahal] have been just that — two words.

So Google has been working on an intelligent model — a “graph” — that understands real-world entities and their relationships to one another: things, not text strings. The Knowledge Graph enables you to search for things, people or places that Google knows about — landmarks, celebrities, cities, sports teams, buildings, geographical features, movies, celestial objects, works of art and more — and instantly get information that’s relevant to your query.

8 Social Curation Tricks For Pinterest And Beyond | iMediaConnection

8 Social Curation Tricks For Pinterest And Beyond | iMediaConnection | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:

"Today curation takes on a different meaning. Organizations have evolved from collecting artifacts to digital curation of media and content.

Anyone and everyone can, and do, curate using everything from bookmarking sites to social networks. "Social curation," as we call it, is simply the act of sharing, categorizing, and spreading content to others.

The content can be your own or someone else's. And, because you are sharing content that lives in its place of origin via linking, it is not considered stealing.

Why do people spend hours online bookmarking, pinning, and reposting?

We all want to be recognized for our expertise, talents, and savvy. Posting content we care about displays our creativity, interests, opinions, and personality.

On the receiving end, people enjoy discovering and exploring things that are highly relevant and interesting.

In this article, we'll discuss how marketers can get in on the social curation boom in a meaningful way.

There are a lot of websites out there offering curation-type services. To get a clear sense of how a brand might leverage curation, we can break them down into categories.

- Social bookmarking and news;

- Sharing;

- Aggregation and syndication networks.

Here are eight ways your brand can get in on the action.

1. Become a curator creator:

This tactic is strictly for warriors because it takes time, diligence, and a step outside the marketing box to become one with a community. Becoming a curator will mean rolling up your sleeves to create your own Pinterest board or other social network profile.

2. Create an interest-based content strategy:

As marketers, we tend to base our communications around products and target markets. To be an awesome content curator or creator, you'll want to push that into the back of your mind and focus on interests. This can be accomplished with some listening, observation, and information collection on what your customers care about when they aren't out buying your product.

3. Optimize for popular sharing topics...

4. Treat photography as being as important as copy:

Video and photography is as valuable as an article. When you're writing your next brilliant article, put time into article images so people are inspired to not only share the article, but also to pin it on Pinterest.

5. Make something worth sharing:

For curation, consider its lasting value and how it fits into popular topics and interest lists. When you see their eyes light up and they send it forward into their communities, you've done your job well.

6. Make it sharable:

Add sharing buttons to your content on your blog, website, shopping cart, and email campaigns. People will do things that require one-click.

7. Make friends with influencers:

Extend your influencer outreach to leaders in Reddit, Pinterest, and Tumblr communities so that when you have something great to share, you've aligned with partners to help get your content out.

8. Post from the inside:

People just want to get to know the people behind the brand...."

Overwhelmed Online? 10 Ideas to Simplify You Life

Overwhelmed Online? 10 Ideas to Simplify You Life | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

I selected this piece by Michael Poh for Hongkiat.com
because I'm always looking for ways to simplify being online.

I found some of his suggestions helpful, things I know I should do but now I'm going to take his advice. I hope there's something here for you too!

Excerpt:

"In a time when the world is connected to the Internet 24/7, it’s hard to imagine how we can survive a day without it".

Here's what caught my attention:

Unsubscribe From Email Lists

**We get subscribed to various email lists whenever we purchase or register products and services. That’s how they can market us their latest products or simply update us with what they’re up to

**If your inbox is often flooded with spam, you’ll be surprised at how good it feels when you only get emails that you want to read.

Clear your inbox

**It’s a kind of discipline that you should impose on yourself as you try to keep your Inbox clear.

**It means that once you receive an email that requires your action, you have to act – reply, forwards, follow up, double check, confirm etc – and be done with it ASAP - Yes!!

Have time-0uts or Days Off

**Everyone needs a breather, and enjoy quality time away from such tension. Take an hour or so of quality offline time each day, or a day during the weekends.

**Just switch off from the Net. You’ll realize that you feel much more energetic and alive when you’re moving around and talking to people.

Twitter Implements Do Not Track Privacy Option | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

It’s no secret that Facebook is worth about $100 billion because it collected personal data about its users. A lot of data.

Although Twitter tracks its users too — albeit in a much less aggressive way — the company has decided to take a different route. It announced Thursday that it is joining Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox Web browser, and giving its users the ability to opt-out of being tracked in any way through Twitter.

Twitter is doing this by enabling the Do Not Track feature in the Firefox browser that enables people to opt-out of cookies that collect personal information and any third-party cookies, including those used for advertising. The Do Not Track functionality will only work if a Web site agrees to acknowledge it....continued...

As Mashable says, "the transition from a word-based index to this knowledge graph is a fundamental shift that will radically increase power and complexity."

LinkedIn Recommends spending 9 minutes a day on continuous career management

LinkedIn Recommends spending 9 minutes a day on continuous career management | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

I have been working with LinkedIn since early 2012, exploring the importance of continuous career management. Along this journey we have found that spending just 9 minutes a day on your career management could help you get promoted, find that ideal job or help you become better at what you’re already doing.

I’ve analyzed what realistically can be fitted into a daily schedule without adding stress or pressure. It is commonly known by educators and psychologists that the ability to focus one’s attention on a task is crucial for the achievement of one’s goals and so I believe that 9 minutes is the maximum time that can be spent concentrating on one subject before minds begin to wander.

How to spend the 9 minute windows Here are some suggested activities you can easily slot into your 9 minute window and LinkedIn clearly provides a perfect platform to facilitate a wide number of these:

Unit 2 Population and Migration

This diagram is an 18 slide powerpoint explaining the uses of, how to analyze, and what a population pyramid shows. This is also in a childish language and is very easy to understand making it an easy thing to use and visualize. It shows how pyramids show fertility rates migration and workforce.

This diagram powerpoint relates to unit 2 because it shows population pyramids with population and migration data on them referencing to the units core concepts. This delves deep into the understanding of the uses of population diagrams overall and their effects on society's parts, It is overall a major part of unit 2.
