IBM supercomputer used to simulate a typical human brain

Garry Schulz's curator insight, December 18, 2012 8:11 AM

The very notion of computers that simulate the human brain seems like pure science fiction.  The reality however is that progress across disciplines such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence (particularly neural networks) and neural computer chip design is both accelerating and converging.  As a result the likelihood of this type of technology emerging in the next 10 to 20 years is much greater than most people appreciate.

It's also important to understand that the quest to build this technology isn't a fringe play.  It is being pursued by some of the brightest minds on the planet, at some of our most prestigious universities and by some of our largest, most accomplished and most well-resourced corporations (e.g. IBM).

Some observations:

  • If IBM and others are successful in this pursuit, it will radically transform a number of industries built on a deep seated belief that only humans can perform the key value adding activities in the industry
  • Even if IBM and others are only partially successful, the technology will still have a massive impact on a range of industries
  • While it might take 20 years for IBM and others to reach their ultimate goal, you can expect them to make progress along the way and for the early impacts of that progress to be felt long before the final goal is achieved.
  • History shows that industry incumbents tend to either be dismissive of or completely miss trends with momentum such as this until it's too late
Swahn Frayé's curator insight, March 5, 2013 4:07 AM

I suggest viewing as a plus to this article this interesting video made by Vsauce about consciousness.
Indeed inspiring ourselves of the human brain to create Artificial Intelligence rises up the question : Will A.I become aware of itself and so reach consciousness? or maybe it will be limited to  a "philosophical zombie" as described in the video

Nick Jernstedt's curator insight, December 15, 2014 5:23 PM

A study has been researched about using the worlds strongest super computer to stimulate a model of a human brain and it super hardwired it and made it work faster than a regular brain.

'Amazon is één groot zwart gat dat de Amerikaanse bedrijfswereld dreigt op te slurpen' | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

Fostering democracy or fraud? WordPress.com criticizes PayPal & credit card firms for restrictions and let users pay with Bitcoin

Fostering democracy or fraud? WordPress.com criticizes PayPal & credit card firms for restrictions and let users pay with Bitcoin | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

TNW: Automattic on Thursday announced you can now buy WordPress.com upgrades with Bitcoins, as part of the company’s mission of “making publishing democratic.” To justify the additional payment method, the company noted that PayPal alone blocks access from over 60 countries [incLKenya, Haiti, Cuba, or Iraq], and many credit card companies have similar restrictions, for political reasons, financial reasons, and/or due to higher fraud rates.

Therese's comment: Rather than freedom of expression, fraud is certainly the main reason why credit card companies hamper some international transactions. In Europe, international transactions represent than 5% of all credit card transactions and more than 80% of the fraud. Bitcoin has a tremendous potential... unfortunately that potential extends to money laundering and other criminal activities http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/433634/money_laundering_using_virtual_worlds_bitcoin_watchdog_radar/

How To Find Openly Licensed Educational Resources You Can Use [Infographic] | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

"Most of us turn to the internet when we are looking for resources to use for a presentation, report or article. The internet holds the key to so many robust resources.

"Yet how many of these resources can you legally use for free? How many of them can you adapt?

"That’s where Open Educational Resources (OER) can help. Here’s an infographic from the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (at the University of Texas at Austin) that can help."

Every Company Can Be a Media Company. And should.

Every Company Can Be a Media Company. And should. | WEBOLUTION! | Scoop.it

"If there's a universal truth in the digital age it's that there's too much content and not enough time to consume it. Naturally, a challenge this large and far reaching is creating opportunities for innovators." writes Steve Rubel of Edelman on the new LinkedIn Tought Leaders section.

He goes on to explain how Scott Beale of Laughing Squid is a great example of using curation to become a media that serves the purpose of developing a company's brand in the age of online media.

"The lesson here is that any company can potentially benefit by thinking and acting like a media company (...) However,you don't necessarily need to create original content."

Great case study.
