How Marketers Can Capitalize on the Coming Internet of Things

How Marketers Can Capitalize on the Coming Internet of Things | Internet des objets | Scoop.it

The so-called Internet of Things? Fugetaboutit … at least for a while. The Internet of Things refers to a world where everyday physical objects are connected to the Internet and are able to identify themselves to other devices.

According to new research from Forrester, the concept is well developed, but the reality is  three to five years away. But the delay is a good thing:  it gives marketers a chance to optimize the Internet of Things for customer engagement.

The agriculture business is "a sleeping giant" for companies building the internet of things | GigaOM Tech News

The agriculture business is "a sleeping giant" for companies building the internet of things | GigaOM Tech News | Internet des objets | Scoop.it

Silicon Valley is about 100 miles or so from California’s Central Valley, which is among the larger agricultural regions in the U.S. The technology that’s being developed and refined by the Bay is increasingly being used inland by farmers that want to bring the power of data to agriculture, said Lance Donny, founder and CEO of OnFarm Systems.

OnFarm, which is located in the heart of the Central Valley in Fresno, is helping farmers and agricultural consultants place sensors in the field and gather data that could help them make projections about weather or pest infections. “Farmers are more connected than you think,” Donny said at GigaOM’s Mobilize conference, acknowledging that wireless connectivity can be a problem in rural areas but that things have gotten a lot better over the past few years.

This is a huge opportunity for companies that are building devices and services around the internet of things, Donny said. “The ag business is a sleeping giant,” and somebody’s going to capitalize on the opportunity.

Internet of things: stop debating terminology, start talking money - Energy Harvesting Journal
Amaté's insight:

A catchy title like the Internet of Things is too good to waste, so it has been resurrected again by a different set of companies - not those focussed on low cost, passive RFID tags, but more those making powered sensors and consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and their communication links and back end data management. This is driven by the rise of mobile computing - mainly smart phones - which has unwittingly created a huge global, connected infrastructure of high computing capability.

1900 milliards de dollars. 1 400 milliards d’euros.
