Creating Interactive Web-based Exercises in Hot Potatoes (TESL-EJ review)

Creating Interactive Web-based Exercises in Hot Potatoes (TESL-EJ review) | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

"Hot Potatoes is a great freeware program for language teachers to create or upload exercises on their personal websites, class group sites, or on the password-protected Hotpotatoes.net. Creating exercises for learners gives them space to repeatedly practise the target language. Students may also engage in the process of creating the exercises themselves, then sharing their work on a class group site for others to access. Previous studies point to the need for learners to be provided with opportunities for language input, making language salient, and focusing on form (Chapelle, 2001; Ellis, 2005). Having students create exercises may allow them to both learn the concepts and practise their language skills through the creation of the exercise (Erben, Ban, & Castaneda, 2009)."

This is an evocative slideshare that makes me wish I had a bit fuller context. Viewing this makes me think I am climbing a tree in winter time. I can see the beautiful bare branching limbs, but I am missing the leaves. Not complaining, just noting.

Free Technology for Teachers: 100+ Registration Free Tools for Students

Free Technology for Teachers: 100+ Registration Free Tools for Students | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

One of the common obstacles to using many Web 2.0 tools in elementary school and middle school classrooms is the registration requirement that those tools have. Fortunately, there are many good Web 2.0 tools that do not require registration.

Nathan Hall has started to put together a Diigo list of Web 2.0 tools that do not require registration. When I saw the list yesterday it had 60 items. When I looked at the list this morning there were 101 items on the list. Take a look at Nathan's list and I think you'll find some new-to-you tools, I did.

The six practices are:

1. Train yourself before you enter class
2. Be consistent - integrate your successes regularly into your classes
3. Follow how students use tech - monitor the learner’s grasp of tools you use and reasons why they are being used
4. assign technology-rich projects in which the technology is an integral part of the work
5. Make tech use egalitarian - Equipping all learners with the same digital technologies
6. Truly connect - make the most of the opportunity to connect your learners with others from around the globe

Women, Power, and Educational Technology

Women, Power, and Educational Technology | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

This the first post I have ever written about females in technology. A few recent incidents got me thinking about this issue. First, I attended/presented at an educational technology conference that had the mission of giving women voices as keynote presenters, yet the major presenters (who were given more time and press) were males. Second, I am spending the day watching TedxWomen and there are male presenters.

These incidents reminded of a powerful experience that happened to me as a college teacher in a face-to-face undergraduate course on Psychology of Adjustment . . .
