Harry Potter Book Project in Edmodo: A Collaborative Initiative Between Students from Egypt and Canada by Ayat Tawel

Harry Potter Book Project in Edmodo: A Collaborative Initiative Between Students from Egypt and Canada by Ayat Tawel | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

[excerpt]: "With an increasing acceptance of children using internet for academic purposes, comes apprehension pertaining to their safety and well-being when online. While as educators we want children to become more « net savvy », we need to temper this with precautions to keep them safe on the web.

This session will demonstrate how educators Ayat Tawel and Bernadette Rego successfully established using Edmodo, a free Learning management system, as a place for students from Canada and Egypt to meet and discuss questions enhancing their reading skills using the popular book « Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone ». We will demonstrate how Edmodo and other web 2.0 tools can be used to protect the students' online identity and communication while creating an enriching learning atmosphere."

Driving Question: How does technology change the game in project-based learning?

sarspri's insight:

A great, short article that exemplifies how purposeful, real-world projects are supported by tech (rather than driven by tech).

ANVILL | National Virtual Language Lab [from CASLS] | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

"ANVILL (A National Virtual Language Lab) is a speech-based toolbox for language teachers. Like the language lab console of old, it's focused on the practice of oral/aural language, but at its core are very modern web-based audio and video tools from duber dot com and the University of Oregon: Voiceboards, LiveChat, and Quizzes and Surveys. Our newest tool, TCast, allows teachers to record and place audio or video files anywhere in a lesson--in 3 easy steps. Each of these tools really opens up the scope and sequence of lessons centered around spoken language tasks."

sarspri's insight:

See also the introductory profile of the project on the CASLS main website (one of the 15 federally-funded NFLRCs):  http://casls.uoregon.edu/pages/tools/anvill.php

Weblogs: a tool for EFL interaction, expression, and self-evaluation [ELT Journal]

Weblogs: a tool for EFL interaction, expression, and self-evaluation [ELT Journal] | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

Abstract:  "The use of blogs in EFL learning and teaching has recently attracted a great deal of research attention. Previous research has demonstrated that blogs foster development of EFL skills. This study, which takes a sociocultural approach, focuses on EFL interaction. Specifically, the study aims to identify the interaction strategies that bloggers employ by exploring both teacher-initiated and student-initiated interactions. An EFL undergraduate class at the University of Chile serves as the vantage point for discussion. Bloggers’ posts and comments are thematically analysed for the purposes of this study. It is demonstrated that blogs promote EFL interaction, self-expression, self-evaluation, and a sense of language progress. The study may be of interest to educationists around the world who are interested in identifying how blogs can best be harnessed within foreign language education for the benefit of learners."

This is what John Holt was talking about in the 60s, student centered education, and adopted by many home school advocates, where children learn because they are innately curious and that curiosity is nurtured in the learning environment.

The feedback seemed cold and distant, even as I as I tried to point out strong areas of writing and multimedia projects.  I overcame this in part by using my iPad to add audio comments to grading. ...
