sarspri's insight:

A great example of Voicethread in action for speaking and listening with language learners.  Many of the prompts are structured as exam practice.  Students can record, but also hear examples by learners from all over the world.

Home page says: Submit some text that you want read aloud in a foreign language.  Record your voice for an Audio Request in your native language.  Download the audio file for your submission.  Learn the language through real, native input.

Shona Whyte's curator insight, January 15, 2013 2:39 AM

ANVILL | National Virtual Language Lab [from CASLS]

ANVILL | National Virtual Language Lab [from CASLS] | Internet 2013 | Scoop.it

"ANVILL (A National Virtual Language Lab) is a speech-based toolbox for language teachers. Like the language lab console of old, it's focused on the practice of oral/aural language, but at its core are very modern web-based audio and video tools from duber dot com and the University of Oregon: Voiceboards, LiveChat, and Quizzes and Surveys. Our newest tool, TCast, allows teachers to record and place audio or video files anywhere in a lesson--in 3 easy steps. Each of these tools really opens up the scope and sequence of lessons centered around spoken language tasks."

sarspri's insight:

See also the introductory profile of the project on the CASLS main website (one of the 15 federally-funded NFLRCs):  http://casls.uoregon.edu/pages/tools/anvill.php

The class felt impersonal, despite my efforts to give it life.  I found that especially frustrating when I graded assignments. The feedback seemed cold and distant, even as I as I tried to point out strong areas of writing and multimedia projects.  I overcame this in part by using my iPad to add audio comments to grading. ...
