Faculty are increasingly skeptical of these large-scale endeavors: as Shambaugh, of GW, said, at least in the case of China, "The jury is very much out on whether campuses in China can be successful, if by campus you mean what Duke and NYU are doing. I would advise any university that’s contemplating this to wait a minimum of five years and see how Duke and NYU do.”

What would be more acceptable to your school's faculty: global centers or branch campuses?

A growing number of teenagers from wealthy families in China are attending schools in New York City, seeking an advantage in admission to American universities.
Ben Piscopo's insight:

The 100,000 Strong Foundation's mission is to expand and diversify the number of Americans studying Mandarin and studying abroad in China. 100K Strong believes that America's best ambassadors is its students.
Ben Piscopo's insight:

There's currently 12x more chinese studying in the US than Americans studying in China. The goal with 100kstrong was/is to balance those numbers.

In terms of Internationalization of American schools, the imbalance is noticeable and should expand passed "international enrollment." At the recent AIEA conference, Dr. Patti McGill Peterson urged that “We need to change our terminology to circulation not exchange...”

How do we "circulate" in a meaningful way? Perhaps 100kstrong can make an impact on that...

It starts with language training. Southeast Asia is paying more attention to Chinese language but we should expect more Chinese universities to partner with counterparts in the ASEAN countries. The choice will eventual be between English-based and Chinese-based international education.

The bipartisan education reform movement sweeping the nation calls for opening up public schools to free-market competition. Integrating International Students

Integrating International Students | Internationalization Abroad | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON – A theme at this year’s Association of International Education Administrators conference was the need to do a better job of integrating international students on American campuses in order to maximize the potential for global learning. The overarching message: student mobility alone won't cut it...

Ben Piscopo's insight:

One of the most interesting challenges posed to administrators at the recent AIEA: "It's not enough to just say... we have x number of international students on campus..."  What else can schools do to internationalize themselves and differentiate academic offerings?

Angela Thomas's curator insight, April 1, 2014 9:28 PM

I appreciate this article and am encouraged by the quote below from  Darla K. Deardorff, executive director of the AIEA and an expert on intercultural competence.

""What we’re seeing in terms of success are those programs that have an actual common goal beyond the interaction in and of itself, that they’re interacting for some greater purpose,” Deardorff said.

As mentioned in the article that greater purpose could be service learning, research and sports teams.

Income Inequality and America’s Schools | Harvard Graduate School of Education

Income Inequality and America’s Schools | Harvard Graduate School of Education | Internationalization Abroad | Scoop.it

Duncan and Murnane are coauthors of the new release from Harvard Education Press,Restoring Opportunity: The Crisis of Inequality and the Challenge for American Education

Ben Piscopo's insight:
Wonderful talk with targeted points. The inequality gap is outpacing the racial gap, but the result is still a problem. The upper 20% spend $9,000 per year (per student) on extracurricular activities and tutoring. The lower 20% spend $1200 per year (per student). The public school system is getting pressure to provide more bang for the tax-payers buck- and these authors suggest a combination of "Consistent School Support" and "Sensible Accountability."  Solutions to this problem should also be reflected in how we project American education ABROAD as well. Hopefully we'll see consistency replace the status quo.
