Is any word untranslatable?

Is any word untranslatable? | International Students and Chicago's ESL Academy | Scoop.it
There are some fantastic words that would make welcome additions to English: who among us hasn't experienced tsundoku, asks Lucy Greaves
ESL Academy's insight:

On the surface this seemed like a simple task because in bringing pieces of writing over into English I often come across words that resist straightforward translation. I am somewhat uncomfortable, however, with the very notion of calling a word "untranslatable", since if I fail to translate the words on the page in front of me I'm obviously not doing my job properly. In order to get round this impasse (there's another example for you) I had to define "untranslatable" in my own terms: a word in one language that has no single-word equivalent in another, yet can be translated using various different strategies.

Process of F1 to H1B Visa change of Status. OPT Rules, Planning – Tips

Process of F1 to H1B Visa change of Status. OPT Rules, Planning – Tips | International Students and Chicago's ESL Academy | Scoop.it
One of the most important things for an international student on F1 visa studying in America is to find an employer and get H1B visa sponsored.  As you know, F1 students are impacted by the New H1B rules and Recession, […]
ESL Academy's insight:
Steps involved in F1 to H1B visa Change of Status & Important Points :You take interview from a H1B sponsoring company and they give you a job offer letter.  You may have interviewed with the company before graduation and might have started working for a company on OPT right after graduation.  The point is, you need a job offer from a H1B sponsoring company.Once you have the offer, you submit all the required documents to the H1B sponsoring company to file for H1B visa petition. For document list info, check article: Documents needed for applying for H1B visa. How much does it really cost ? What should you NOT give ?F1 visa students with MS or MBA from US are eligible for H1B Advanced degree quota of 20,000. Typically, the attorney will file your visa petition under this category if you have masters from US. If not, you will be filed under general category.Typically, USCIS accepts H1B visa petitions starting April 1st, there used to be lottery, but with recession and new H1B visa rules of 2011 things have changed and there was no lottery this year for FY 2011 cap. Anyways, the point is, some employers do not know the full rules and it is your job to remind them about the deadlines and makes sure they process the H1B visa petition filing on time for your F1 visa change of status to H1B.Once you file for H1B visa petition, you will get a H1B visa receipt notice from USCIS. Using the receipt number. You can Check H1B status OnlineDepending on number of petitions filed and the work load of USCIS, they process H1B visa petitions anywhere from 2 to 6 months or early. It depends. If you file for Premium processing, you will hear back from USCIS within 15 business days. The 15 day clock is a bit tricky when you file on April 1st, this year USCIS said, they will count the 15 days from April 7th. In general, if you do premium processing  for your H1B petition, you should hear back in 15 business days or earlier.Once your H1B petition is processed by USICS a decision is made, they update the case status online and send your employer the decision.  Hopefully you get the approval notice. Typically, your H1B visa term starts from October and your status is automatically converted to H1B from F1 Visa.

Tips for H1B Visa Holders

Tips for H1B Visa Holders | International Students and Chicago's ESL Academy | Scoop.it
Tips for H1b visa holders. Information about H1 transfer, status and benefits allowed being on H1B visa in USA.
ESL Academy's insight:
Commonly asked questions about H1B visaHow many H1 visas can a person have?

There is no limit for number of H1 Visas. You may have any number of H1 visas.

What is H1 approval and what is a Visa? How many H1 approvals can a person have?

The visa is a permit to enter into any foreign country for a specific time limit on a specific purpose. The H1 approval is the green paper (Form I-797). It is an approval stating that you can work legally for the company stated on the I797 form. A person can have multiple H1 approvals from various companies. However, at any given point of time, the visa can be stamped for one company only.

H1B-Visa is stamped for company A. Can a person work for company B?

Legally no, unless you have the H1 approved petition for company B

Is H1B-Visa transfer possible?

Yes, the H1 transfer is possible. The applicant has to be physically present in US for the visa transfer process to be complete.
You will need your I-94 form and pay stubs from company A. Remember that visa transfer doesn't gets affected by H1-cap as it is already issued, and is transferable. All you need is the Company B to take care of all the paper work for transfer of H1B visa. You do not need the permission from Company A for visa transfer process.

How long am I allowed to stay in the US on H1B visa?

There is a limit of 6 years on the H1B visa. Conditions for staying on H1B visa for more than 6 years:

If you want to work in the U.S. for more than 6 years then you will have to stay outside the U.S. for at least one year. After that you may apply for the H1B and re-enter U.S.If you have applied for the green card, ou may be eligible for extension beyond 6 yrs. The condition is that your labor should be pending for more than 365 days or that you have applied for 485/AOS.Is there a fast track for H1B application processing?

Yes, your employer may file your H1 petition under Premium Processing. for an extra 1000$ fee.

Can you start your company, while on an H1B?

Yes, you can. But you can't form an S-Corporation. For that you have to be a citizen of US. There are many routes for starting your own company. The most effective route is to form a "Limited Liability Company (LLC).

You can find lots of companies on the internet that can do this. They may charge you around 150-200$, and the procedure may take few days.LLC can be a "Partnership Firm" or the liability protection as an "Incorporated Company".You can be the Chairman or Director of the board, but you can't work for it, unless you have an H1 visa issued from that company. But, you can always hire a CEO for the company, who has a work permit (Green card or Citizen etc.).For more information about LLCs please visit: http://www.llc.com/

If you are denied a visa, there may be something you can do to reverse the denial. You may appeal the decision. In most cases, you will need to provide additional documentation that was not presented with the initial application. A fax or e-mail from your U.S. school to the Embassy or Consulate in your city containing details about your qualifications, and requesting reconsideration, can be helpful in pursuing a successful appeal. Faxes should be addressed to the Chief of Nonimmigrant Visas at the Consular pos t in question. Fax and telephone numbers are available on the Department of State website at http://usembassy.state.gov.

In some cases, a visa officer may request additional information such as proof of employment, or ownership of a home or business. You should respond with the information requested.

Once a visa is approved, you should receive your visa within a few days.

Grammar Hammer: Why Would a Good Man Such As Yourself Do a Thing Like That? | International Students and Chicago's ESL Academy | Scoop.it
This week’s topic explores the proper use of “like” versus “such as.” While we love to pepper our sentences with this classic crutch word, grammatically speaking, there is a very specific time and ...
ESL Academy's insight:

For the rest of us in the English-speaking world, there isn’t much distinction between using “like” and “such as” in a casual setting. Therefore, consider the context and if a more formal tone is needed, and you need to show an example of how the shoe fits, use “such as.” Otherwise, I don’t think you’ll confuse or offend anyone if you continue to use “like.”

100 years of Chicago bungalows

100 years of Chicago bungalows | International Students and Chicago's ESL Academy | Scoop.it
As Chicago's population boomed, so did its bungalows. Now there are more than 80,000 of these beloved buildings, making them a critical part of the city's architectural landscape.
ESL Academy's insight:

That's according to the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association, the agency responsible for cataloguing and promoting these homes. And this year and next, the bungalow association will celebrate what is roughly the 100th birthday of this housing type in Chicago.

There were a small number of bungalows built here in 1907 and 1908, and another handful in 1910. But Mary Ellen Guest, the association's executive director, said that the building of bungalows really picked up a century ago.

"Bungalows really started to catch fire in 1913 and 1914," Guest said, in large part because a population boom was underway. The city grew by more than 500,000 people -- from 2.2 million to 2.7 million -- between 1910 and 1920, according to data from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The city would gain close to 675,000 additional residents by 1930, growth that, geographically, maps nearly perfectly to the contours of the "bungalow belt," the area of greatest bungalow concentration. The belt "is literally a 'C' that goes around the old center city," Guest said.
