Agricultural Law: Portraits of Hunger: Americans on Food Stamps

The PBS News Documentary, Need to Know, did an informative episode on "food stamp" recipients last night, Portraits of Hunger: Stories of Americans on Food Stamps. It is a moving, yet objective look at what its like to be worried about food security in America. Almost half are children, approximately forty percent are working, but still fall below poverty guidelines, and many are elderly. Here is an excerpt. There are additional videos on the website, including commentary on poverty in America.

Agricultural Law: Harsh Reality: The Impact of the Government Shutdown on Food Assistance

Agricultural Law: Harsh Reality: The Impact of the Government Shutdown on Food Assistance | International Social Work and Community Based Participatory Research | Scoop.it

Approximately 49 million Americans struggle with food insecurity. The most recently released USDA statisticsplace 7 million Americans in the "very low food security" tier; this means that "at times during the year, the food intake of household members was reduced and their normal eating patterns were disrupted because the household lacked money and other resources for food." A frightening ninety-nine percent of those 7 million Americans reported that they worried food would be gone before they had money to buy more, even though many food insecure Americans participate in one or more federal food assistance programs, like SNAP, WIC, or the school lunch programs.

Food Network Star Alex Guarnaschelli Joins Glad Tackle Food Waste | International Social Work and Community Based Participatory Research | Scoop.it

16 October 2013, PRNewswire -- "Food waste is a global issue that affects the environment, economy and food security. This holds true right here in the US, where American families throw out 25 percent of the food they buy – that's roughly the equivalent of $1,500 wasted each year. Knowing Sunday is the day many people plan, shop and prep food and meals for the week, Glad® Food Protection is partnering with Food Network personality Alex Guarnaschelli to launch the #SAVEITSUNDAY movement at the New York City Wine & Food Festival, promoting Sunday as a key time to focus on helping end food waste at home. ..."
